Just clipped my car on the way up to the yard, and had a temp repair done, so if I can get up and ride, at this stage that will be a bonus!

Aww MP, hope your girl is better soon.

So rode this evening in new matchy, felt very coordinated and smug ? was doing lots of and lots of trot canter trot canter transitions, going swimmingly until horse seemed to trip going into a canter. Gathered ourselves together, walked a bit, all ok so resumed but he was being a bit weird and fidgety, but put it down to YO being out in yard in the tractor moving bales around. I was wrong. Finished up to discover...

Even better, my farrier was at the yard this morning for another client ??‍♀️ but sent him a text of this picture and he’s coming out tomorrow to sort it, phew!

On another note, we’ve had the big lad for a year this week. Despite the whole COVID situation, we’ve had a fab year with our newbie ? time flies when you’re having fun ?

Fab pictures Sheep, happy owniversary!

Pebbles' sharer came today and was starting to get a softer outline out of her so lots of smiles all round. So I'll school her once over the weekend to work on straightness (a bit of wayward shoulder syndrome going on at the moment!).

Got back on Arts today after 3 weeks off, just flexi walk work but she was very good ❤️. Will hack her gently over the weekend to start on the road of building her fitness up again for the spring ?. Not long to go not long to go not long to go...

Had a lovely hack this morning. It was pretty stormy first thing but has turned into a beautiful day. We just went for a march round the block but it was lovely to be out hacking her again.

Pics for interest since there is not much going on atm:

As we headed out, sky still looking a little moody

Starting to brighten up

Back home in bright sunshine and blue skies. Dabs waiting for us on the hill

(That fence in the last picture is leaning because of a missing section just behind where I'm stood, care of my darling mare)

Hope everyone is having a pleasant weekend

I'm feeling inspired by TFF to do a 'hacking report' (in the exact opposite 'frame' of how I truly felt about it while out today, to help take the positives!)

My usual hacking partner wasn't able to come out today so I went with a couple of other from the yard. I've been out with each of them individually before, but I don't think together. Off we set, share horse (SH) on a mission with some pep in his step from being out with the others, fab I thought we'll get a good walk out today. Early trot to get us all moving and reduce ants in the horse's pants, usually helps my nerves to get a good trot in at the start of our hacks. Also I managed to remember to sing as has been advised so many times for nerves (song of choice: bulletproof by la roux)

"Well this is all very exciting, *squeal*!" says SH who proceeds into unrequested trot/jog. My brain predicted imminent doom and decided we wanted to get off immediately and go home thank you very much. My companions encouraged me not to give up because they know a - doom is unlikely, and b - even if it does come I'll probably be fine. In hindsight it really is more reassuring they didn't say "yeah you're screwed, get off that horse and go home for all our sakes!"

Long story short, we had more jogging, a little buck/skip, and some very unrequested cantering which all added the big ol' soup of my nerves. BUT! (and here's the reframe...) I didn't give up, or get off (of my own will or otherwise). I was accompanied by people who know what they're doing and offered advice to manage the situation. SH was loving life even if I was very not. I cantered on a hack (even if I didn't mean to) and actually felt quite secure despite panicking (see above re: doom). I learned that my bloody lower leg needs work (my companions spotted me nagging even though I was not wanting more forwards at all and had no idea I was doing it - How and why legs, how and also why?!) so now I can work on it. I was able to overcome every instinct in my body, and relax my hands instead of rein shortening and pulling (half halts work, who knew!) I actually managed to get SH alongside and behind the others for parts of the ride, I'm not sure how important this is but to me it seems helpful to know you can do a bit of this instead of having to absolutely always be in front (where he becomes a bit lazy actually *sigh*)

Not sure I want to repeat the experience much, definitely got to work on the lower leg thing either way. On the one hand it's good learning, and in theory could be fun to go out with these companions if I can get my s**t together long enough to enjoy the chat and forget the doom. On the other, I just kind of like a relaxed bimble about, admiring the view, chatting nonsense to SH, and greeting people in an overly jolly manner because I am living my childhood dream of riding a horse I share :)

well done SPD :) definitely a learning event.... but you survived :)

We went for walkies and did some posing. Walkies always = posing because there's always something to look at! Much as I really do enjoy riding-training her, she's a pretty cool walking companion, trundles along happily at my shoulder with us alternating who takes the lead depending on how brave she is.

Hey SPd, well done! You survived a 'group' hack, excellent news.
File the 1st bit away in the bottom drawer - as you now know doom is over rated. There are huge positives to take away. You now know you can think about what your legs are doing and why, you cantered, and learnt to relax your hands, well done x

MP, she's looking v cheerful :)

I schooled Tobes and grown up Toby appeared. I am finally, FINALLY feeling what connection means. I think..... I hope I'm not kidding myself. But today Toby was stretching forward into the rein, was on the aids, felt rhythmic. I asked for a bit more trot and felt this immediate push from behind. It felt so lovely I wanted to just keep riding forever! He tries so hard and is such a lovely horse.

I finally managed to get out hacking, for the first time since Christmas. Blue was feeling very energetic and full of beans so I was looking forward to a good long trot to let her get it out of her system. Unfortunately, our hacking route was heaving with pedestrians and uncontrolled dogs so we were stuck to walk most of the time. She was absolutely super, despite being bouncy. A dog ran between her legs at one point, and she didn't even twitch an ear.

And she also tolerated all the new hi-viz and LEDs I piled on her. I hadn't realised just how much the LED browband makes her look like she's in an 80s aerobics video...

Fingers crossed we can get out early tomorrow and beat the pedestrians.

I go out early to beat the hordes if I can pippipony.
SP you managed to make that sound quite ok really, lots of positives in there - stick at it and little by little a little becomes a lot.
AE that sounds great too, hes a lovely chap I think he'll be one of these that just quietly steps up the more you ask of him.
My owner pinched supercob today for a hack, she's not ridden all week and she's busy tomorrow so I said I'd "keep an eye on" her kids - they're not tiny and pretty well behaved so more a case of just reminding them its a yard occasionally. So she hacked while I did jobs and then I just had a general mooch really. Been a good day though

My heroic farrier came out this afternoon so we have 4 shoes again! It was later on though, so too dark for hacking (hopefully that will be on the agenda for tomorrow.
Rode in the school and he was super. Working on varying the bend, it really helps him engage and push through in the trot. I’m not coordinated enough yet to have done much of it in the canter ?

Tried to get a nice pic of him in his new saddlecloth... didn’t have much success

Had super lesson today. L is really starting to show impulsion in the canter, it's such a weird feeling because it feels slow to me. Considering we started out with a wall of death canter about a year ago, I would call that a success!

Both instructors have agreed she is showing more suppleness which is super after her small holiday. Was good for her to have that time off. Had a play with the half pass the last week or so, we did our first decent canter half pass the other day, so I am hoping once we know where all 6 of our legs are we can crack the trot half pass soon. A soonish goal is to start installing changes, so going to revisit the prep work for that in the next few months. I was never really a dressage rider but I am enjoying learning and exploring all the moves. Really helps that my pony has the best temperament and just tries even if I confuse her a bit.

Looks like everyone had a great weekend!

Took the microcob out for her first hack in months after her wind operation. Very happy to be out even if one of the dog walkers rolled her eyes muttering loudly about the pony needing a bath. Feral native with feathers after a tonne of rain = hippo

Going to trial a bareback pad next week because saddle really doesn't fit any more, it's not a case of a quick adjustment and i don't want to get her a new one until we know whether or not get breathing can cope with ridden work.

Be nice to be able to ride at least one of them. This winter has been a real slog with all the hard bits of horse ownership and no fun!

Went in the school today and someone had left some poles out, so we did a bit of pole work- once he got the idea, it was really good and really helped his trot. Also focused his attention, which is good, as he can get easily distracted by the car park, horses coming in and all the rest of it.

Finished with a little hack around the fields as the sun was setting. I should have taken a photo really as the sky was an amazing colour.

Biggest achievement was that he let me get on and faff with no fidgeting for the first time. He is very much a "walk off as soon as you feel weight in the saddle" pony, and we have been working on this-today, he was perfect!

Yes I do wish my brain wasn't quite so good at vividly imagining impending doom based scenarios! There's been talk of going on the permit hacking/XC land nearby in the Spring, and my mind is going wild at all the ways that might go wrong if we're in a group. We'll see on that one anyway.

Another hack today with a different companion, who also prefers a chilled out pace and the two horses don't wind each other up at all. A fresh start today, putting aside how things were yesterday. The weather was so nice (sunshine!) it just lifts everything anyway. Really busy with walkers and cyclists but the horses didn't mind at all. I laughed at the way share horse can always tell before me when there's walkers up ahead and starts walking faster in their direction as if he's investigating something very important (looking for a scooby snack? you never know!) I tried to pay attention to my naughty lower leg but I am sure it's still moving about more than it should be. Will keep working on it (and maybe start a thread looking for top tips!)

Rooni is still off games with his huge splint :( I hopped on last weekend and we are 99.999999999999% ok but I wasn’t happy with the 0.00000000000001% that wasn’t so more R&R for him.

0C6E752E-1B6D-4073-A820-3675B0691E66.jpeg

Missing riding him so much.

Fig has gone on a few (local) adventures. He’s not relaxing in the slightest in company as everything becomes a race but he’s so cool on his own. Will go by/through/over/under anything.

EED89B63-AB73-41F7-A939-22EEA5ACB6CC.jpeg

Otherwise, he is feeling great in the school and quite enjoying the creature comforts of 2 hours out and the rest in his snug stable in this weather.

And he’s being much calmer about the schoolwork and today was excellent. It’s just muscle and brain exercise, Ele level work and letting him play at the harder stuff he finds easy and not pressing anything to be perfect.

Shoes have been on pony for a week, and quite honestly it feels like I’m riding a different animal out hacking. He must have been so uncomfortable ?
The rain was horrendous yesterday and the fishing lakes are the highest I’ve ever seen them. Thinking I might need to build an ark! But we had a lovely ride on our own and didn’t see another person. Very nice weather today so decided to avoid the hoards of people over the country park and had a great pole session on the lunge

Little hack round the local estate, totally uneventful really. Went with another livery and had a nice leg stretch and chat. Hot clothed with a splash of oil when we got back and washed his scabby knees. We've got some lime dip to spray his legs with - highly sulphurous stuff but I gave them a good spray all round. They've been massively better since his mite injection and cutting out the sugar beet
