Still not a lot happening in Scotland! Anything that is is too far away for my lazy ass to go plus I am racing almost every weekend for the forseeable future! Like today. I am at Market Rasen with 1 horse in the 2.50pm. I should probably go and plait him up soon but he is happy chilling in his box. He will probably be 2nd again. He has ran in 6 chases and been 2nd 5x and 3rd once ... so at least he is consistant! ??? Home tonight - should be home about 10pm-ish if we get a clean run up the road. Then I am back on the yard at 5am to leave at 6am for Uttoxeter with 2 more horses. Fun times. They don't run til 4.40pm so it will be another late night back.

Racing and dressage are very similar in the way they work - you have your time and you are 99% certain to be competing within 3mins of that time ?? That's why I like it! No hanging around wondering when you will be on!

I had a great 2 days away! Write up below....

A weekend road trip.
Having had an invitation to stay from someone on here I now count as a very good friend, I made arrangements to visit. Mini pony care was agreed with young D and his mum Cl, mini pony helper stepped in at last minute to P dog sit on the Friday till my DH could pick her up after work, as local thunderstorms were forecasted. Box loaded early Friday morning and I was on my way by 9.30. By the time I’d got 10 mins down the road, I realised I’d forgotten my torch, tack cleaning kit and 1st aid kit, muppet!
The drive down the M25 was unremarkable (odd on a Friday! ) and the M40 pottered along nicely too till just after junction 9 when a very heavy rain storm suddenly blew in and stayed for about 5 miles, white knuckle driving as visibility was very restricted and speed in all lanes just dropped to 40! Once that had gone, the route was easy again and by late morning I had found my way to the yard where LL keeps her 2.
B Fuzzy was a little surprised to come off the box and go into a stable. Together with LL’s help, I unloaded all my horsey bits, of tack, feed, grooming kit etc, swept out the box and popped my bed up, tidied round and then we settled in the yard kitchen (bigger and more well equipped than my home kitchen!) for a cuppa and sandwiches.
After lunch we tacked up and rode out down the high street and turned off down a narrow lane to head for bridleways. LL riding her German riding pony, who is a tad bigger than a pony.
What a fabulous ride out! Good margins beside the country lanes and brilliant going across old hilly pasture land. LL mentioned gates before we left, I hadn't listened... so there was a bit of clambering on and off (note to self, hunt whip would have been handy, must put mine in box if am invited back again!)
The last 100 yards was along an A road, but traffic v polite, even a big bus slowed right down. I can now say B Fuzzy v good in traffic! Back to yard, we then popped over to LL's house and I got to meet her 3 lovely cats and have a guided tour of the garden and back paddock/orchard. We headed back and did early evening chores, wiped tack over and then poured the vino whilst the bbq got going. OMG, I was spoilt! Fabulous steak, chicken kebabs served with a selection of yummy posh pastas! We crawled off to bed in our respective pony transport soon after dark......

Saturday. Up at 6, neddies were done and we were ready to leave before time. Off we set for the drive down lovely Oxfordshire and then Gloucestershire's roads to go to the Cotswold Farm Park for a fun ride. LL took her 2nd pony, her lovely Connemara B. 50 mins later we were checking in, time for me to grab a last ciggie before tacking up and setting off. We saw Adam (Henson, it’s his place, the chap from Countryfile) driving off across the course, then off we went.
No probs in passing the pig area, but then both ponies got lead shoes about passing an extremely huge cow (in it’s own field, minding it’s own business! ) so a bit of hustling was done to go forward and then pop the 1st of many jumps. Awesome scenery throughout the ride, we went up hill and down on grass a few times, crossed old pastureland, meandered a zig zag route through a beautiful wood, splashed through a ford on a small road and then more forest tracks. A bit of roadwork and then a fabulous trot through woodland we cam out onto a long downhill track. Halfway down we heard noises behind and on looking back realised there was a loose horse heading at us! We both turned our ponies to face it and with both of us calling whoa, whoa, it stopped so LL was able to grab its rein. A chap can running down to collect it, turned out it was nothing to do with the fun ride, but a local young rider who had got tipped off further back.
All sorted, we carried on, more jumps, fabulous headlands, a grassy valley where we jumped a few fences and ended up whooping it up to the end with a v brisk canter! I was v proud of B Fuzzy as she went behind for most of the jumps, those who know her will appreciate how good that was! More farmland to traverse, and we arrived back at the start. B Fuzzy was boggling as when we left a couple of hours or so earlier, we were at the front of the box parking, now there was a lot of boxes and trailers, I’m sure she thought we had done a 10 mile plus hack to a competition lol.
We checked back in and collected our finishers rosette, sorted ponies out and got on our way back. On the whole the traffic was fine, apart from Stow which was heaving with shiny new 4 x 4s which had drivers with not too much brain matter...... we eased through and eventually got back to the farm.
A good hot wash for B Fuzzy, light rug and she settled down to her hay.
We headed back to LL's for cat feeding and human showering, ahhhh, bliss!
Evening stables done, we decided not to bother with the planned Indian takeaway but demolished sausages and anything we had left from the night before, washed down with more vino. LL cleaned her bridles after, I just chatted as had already left my tack in the horsebox at the top of the yards and it was raining.......
Early night, falling asleep to the sound of heavy rain on the box roof.

Both of us up early this morning, LL kindly fed B Fuzzy whilst I was packing my bedding up and all to soon we had done chores and I was ready to load.
Trip home was very uneventful (thank you motorway gods!) and B v happy to bounce back out in the field with her little chums.

Had the most marvellous time, probably talked too much, discovered I can sleep in the box but was glad we didn't get wet when riding as I might not have enjoyed living in the box so much. Discovered B still takes everything in her stride and makes the most of it.
Happy days!

I am so pleased you had such a good time up here TFF. I have had a brilliant weekend and as you are so well behaved you can visit again ? The fun ride was just that, great fun and thank you for encouraging me to jump higher. Now I know I can do it I will be happy to do it again. B Fuzzy is beautiful with such a lovely kind nature and I think both my boys were smitten with her.

Ouch Wheels and Chippers! Hope both sore heads are getting better.

Great pic Chippers. I was sorry to have missed Eland schooling but I have booked in for Wednesday. Toby was sound by Tuesday evening and farrier confirmed no hoof sensitivity so I rode on Friday. Dressage lesson which was a bit weird. Toby was fresh and fizzy and not being terribly co-operative. I was rusty after 3 weeks off so I was concentrating really, really hard but not doing very well. Looking at the vidoe I do look a bit miserable but I wasn't at all. I was just focused. But after 40 minutes my dressage instructor threw a bit of a wobbly saying 'do you even ant a lesson, I've got plenty of other things I could be doing with my time!" At the time I was mortified. I hate seeing trainers trying their best with sulky, stroppy riders. But I was not feeling sulky or stroppy so she just misread my mood completely. I was trying to follow every instruction which she should have been able to see, so I am not sure quite what happened there. Plus I always focus in lessons and she surely knows how much I value instruction and how hard I work. Anyway, I have decided to put it down to a bad day on her part!

Then today I had a jumping lesson which was brilliant. Suddenly he just felt more fluent and confident. Little clip of the lesson below. These were the last 3 fences of a full course. In fact I might ask my SJ instructor to just teach me flatwork too. She's really good and she's on my yard too which is very handy! Her 'don't congratulate yourself yet' comment made me laugh. I am always so surprised when I do something well I forget to ride the next bit too!

What a lovely horse he is AE

Your dressage instructor sounds a bit scary TBH - not sure I'd be happy being spoken to like that

I was upset at first then pee'd off. Now I just think she was having an off day. She looked very tired! But if anything like that happens again I'll move on.

Sounds like some busy, action packed weekends.
We started on Wednesday with a jump lesson. Cob was on top form, despite the 30+ heat. Did some grid work and she was really jumping well, then onto single fences and a short course. She did suddenly drop off so called it a day, but very pleased with her. Short hack on Thursday to stretch the legs.
Friday we made the most of the overnight rain and went and did some fast work on hack for the first time in what feels like ages.
Then Saturday my friends mum borrowed her so they could hack out together - she has lost her confidence on her horse and no longer hacks him. Sounds like they had a great time.
Then today we went to a local riding club jumping competition. Moved up a height to do the 70cm and 80cm - our first time at 80cm. double clear in the 70cm, one or two where we got a little deep but otherwise a nice round. Even took some short cuts in the jump off to come 3rd (never going to beat the whizzy ponies).
Then in the 80cm she was absolutely fab! Nice rhythm, didn't look at the fillers, hit every jump either perfect or on a forward stride. Another double clear! 4th place after taking a slightly longer route to the last. Considering two weeks ago we had a couple of issues over 60cm where she just dropped me and kept coming back to trot. So really pleased.
Short hack tmw and then she has the chiropractor.

The other boy has had a quiet week after being lame last Sunday, but seems to have recovered and been sound for 2 days now, so will pick his rehab back up.

Glad you are ok wheels , that’s sounds very ouchie .

IHW - he’s really coming on a treat , and what a lovely sympathetic rider you have for him .
AE , I’m afraid I’d have told the instructor to do one . Happy to be bossed around , but that was plain rude .
I hadnt intended To do anything this week , but at the last minute thought I’d go to a local show . No one around so went on my own . So started plaiting Pip up at 12, quick brush and off we went , arrived at the show 1hr 30 mins after deciding to go ?? . I was late for the ridden hunter class so had to apologise to the judge who wasn’t very happy with me and proceeded to tell me to apologise to the others in the class . ( I had asked if there was enough time to enter it. ) any how PiP was ace . Ignored me flapping and actually stood in line without fidgeting , and we can away with 3rd . Then we went in ridden Irish draughts class and came 2nd . She’s just fabulous, and makes solo trips a pleasure ?

My mare went to a show, only started jumping on Monday after 12 months with me playing dressage and pole work only. She is really no fuss so went to B Nov and just made a mistake at the double but otherwise clear. Really pleased with her. I will not advertise her just yet, I really want her to be able to show herself properly, she will probably do some XC schooling and maybe do a BE event in a few weeks. Not her fault that I have been overwhelmed with mum stuff. I want her to have a super competitive home where she can shine with her undoubted talent and be the eventer I envisaged. TBH, the individual parts are pretty much there, but she needs more jumping for fitness before moving on.

I did try a horse for me, it was lovely in his own way, but not right for a few reasons. I'm not in a rush, I'm sure that as winter, recession and redundancies hit, there will be a few to choose from in the family friend horse type category.

Lovely to see everyone else out having fun.

First weekend at new yard done and the ponies are starting to settle in. Both have been somewhat highly strung ? but today Kira did some easy work with a good attitude and Darcy had a big sleep, which made me happy because I know he loves his kip ?

What good timing to have an indoor school! It has rained all weekend.

Writing at the winter champs at Hartpury tomorrow... early start, have to be on site for 7.20.

We did not have a fantastic outing. I was on and in the working in for dressage before I spoke the steward - unusual for me I normally say hi and check they're on time first. Well, she did say they were running late by 20 plus minutes as I said hello. Now, I'd gone up for and was very happy with a 15 minute work in, this turned into about 50 minutes with over half that in a stuffy indoor, resulting dressage was flat as a pancake and broke canter. So I'm fairly pleased with a 32.75 for that on balance - hes capable of far better and while I gave him breaks having ditched my stick (BE rules) halfway in the warm up to not forget I just couldn't gee him up enough.
Lesson learned - check first!
Worked in ok for the jumping, swapped tack and cracked on, jumped 3 fences in the warm up and went straight in - having already done virtually an hour doing more seemed pointless.

I knew I needed to kick on more this time after last week so that was my focus. We had fence 2 and 3 down and either 1 or 4 - really clumsy too close take offs, I was very disappointed with myself, he was jumping but I just couldn't seem to get us to the right spot. And suddenly at 5 it came together, we had an otherwise clear round smoothly jumped with barely a wobble - sack the jockey! We were just over the time - 0.4 time faults

On returning home we spotted a missing shoe and having looked at the pro pics it was on at 2 and 3 and gone by 7 - so maybe dont sack the jockey quite yet. I'm guessing it came loose and was troubling him more so than when it came off...

Not awful at least, we were not E'd at fence 1, we have a sound horse still, and a still straight and square jockey.
Onward and upward

Did a hunters challenge today that was moved to an arena instead of a field due to the total lack of rain. Managed to get a sneaky 5th place by riding tight lines and jumping the joker as one thing my boy is not is a speed demon! Very pleased with him.

Some fab pics in this thread from everyone elses weekend, but here is my little (but very skinny!) contibution. IMG-20200816-WA0114.jpg

Don’t think I posted our activity. Visited a new xc venue on Saturday and only then did I realise it was actually new new. Opened about 2 months ago - kimpton xc. Brilliant to have a nearby one as there really aren’t many places left in Herts now. It’s 35 mins from my yard and a lovely place to hack around, do fitness work using the hills, and has a nice set of smaller fences. Not massively technical but enough to have fun. And the ground was fabulous after the rain.

Had a lovely group and was able to practice going away solo and getting him to be more focussed on me. He is much more confident in company generally. Jumped everything and was taking them on in a forward stride, so I was proper chuffed. Even did a few ‘bigger’ (for me) jumps as he was going so nicely.

Following another thread, and a question from paddi about hunter trials v ode for nappy horses, I’ve decided to focus on xc and hunter trials to the end of this season. Feel too rusty and don’t have the brain space to attempt a ode. There are a couple of HTs coming up so i can test out the nappiness and see if it improves with more regular outings.

That's a very skinny skinny THO, well done they are not easy to jump.
Bernster, I think so much of the season is a write off anyway at least you have a plan to get out and enjoy your horse.
Red, your mare sounds fab - I'm sure you'll find someone super for her.
One other positive was running in to an old friend today - she was grooming for her friend who was directly after me, so we had a nice chat and supercob proved to be super by giving her horse a little lead when we moved in to the indoor working in and again from working in to test arena. Hes such a reliable dude and so steady it's nice to make someone's life a little easier - I'd have done it for anyone of course, just makes me appreciate that hes actually a pretty straightforward chap most of the time ?

Ginger night-mare was good- jumped a nice double clear in the 100.
I had a slight difference of opinion with the dressage judge who awarded a perfectly ok test with a couple of blips (which I would normally predict to be about 38, 40 if a bit stingy) with a 47 ? When you pair a comment of 'Balanced square halt' with a mark of 5......
Luckily we go for double clears not rosettes!

We had a lovely weekend. Cross country training was awesome, he is like a fish in water out there. He was jumping some decent questions without hesitation and all I really need to do is support him. I am getting better at that but still making plenty of mistakes too. I honestly think he will be ready to upgrade soon which I wasn't expecting at all!

We also went to a local club to ride around and do some pace work, so both the horses had a good forward canter and a change of scenery.

Sounds like loads of people had some fun weekends!

@Ambers Echo I will probably go again soon as I want to jump around some more of the 80 fences so we could plan another trip! Toby is just so cute.

Looks like everyone has had good weekends! We also did our first barefoot long hack yesterday (mainly because his feet are slightly too long for his boots! farrier coming this week) decided to chance it as I could always turn back if he wasn't coping but he was so good :) this particular hack only has a small amount of road work but there are a few stony paths which I was worried about but he took them all in his stride. Walked a little slower which is fair enough but i'm so pleased he coped with them - shoes have been off around 4 months so far and i'm happy with our progress! even if he has currently decided Equimins are off the menu....

Box also failed it's MOT (unsurprising) with some corrosion so that's in the garage and will hopefully be back up and running soon - Annoyed at the corrosion (again not surprised though considering the winter storms and t it didn't move for 3 months) but I was very pleased to not get any advisories or other issues! Every cloud!

Chippers1 I am going on Wednesday and on Sunday. If Toby does not jump that ditch hedge confidently in training I won't present him to it in competition. It's just not fair on him. But I'll still do the ODE for the experience and just miss that fence out. Eland allow you to carry on after elimination so that should be ok.

I do think it's a shame they have put in such a tricky and big fence in a 50cm class. And have not even bllack flagged it! That height should surely be about giving super green/novice horses and riders a good experience. I love all their mini versions of the 80/90 course - the castle, the trailer etc. I would not want to jump 18 small logs! But that fence would not look remotely out of place in the 70cm class. In fact even in the 70 it would be trickier than a few of the others. But John has always liked to throw in these awkward fences in his non BE events. Remember the whale? Never seen so many fallers at one fence than at that.

Sorry should have clarified it would be September some time when I next go to school round!
I totally agree about that fence, even in the bigger classes people were being caught out by it. I think the 50 version shouldn't have the ditch in front of it at least! It is a little unfair that you go expecting to jump 50 or 70 and that fence is 70/90!
Same, I love the course there it's such an interesting variety of jumps. Buzz luckily jumped everything that I tried (I was worried about the new caravan jumps, he jumped the trailer fine at the last hunter trial but you never know!) and the brush/ditch fence - the only one I had an issue with was the corner that he's jumped loads :D must remember to ride to the centre of it or he runs out ha.

I am so smug about the whale jump as he's always jumped it first time, which I've also found amusing as he can be such a pain with jumping sometimes!

Just wanted to add, at the moment the 50 version of the brush fence has a pretty noticeable gap in the brush so it does look a little more inviting! No doubt they will tidy it up for the ODE but it might help get him over it :)

We hacked on Saturday and Sunday, J was a star but feel like he is struggling with the heat (we went first thing in the morning when it was 16 degrees or so). He doesn't seem to be enjoying the hacking any more, so I think maybe I need to do some polework in the field this week to break things up.

Oh that's good! Fingers crossed it looks better. But I think it is the ditch that is the main problem as Tobes jumped the other brush at the top of the hill. That's another big one for a 50cm though at least you can brush through that one. But it is hard because you are jumping into space as it's on the brow of a hill. Luckily he did not mind that. A lot of horses seem to hate it.

Are we talking about fence 3as the "other" one? We made such a pigs ear of that first time, did the one on the right initially - 50 I think - jumped from a virtual standstill and cat leaped so badly I banged my head on his neck ? we had a few goes at that - I thought that looked really savage as it looked like big spikes, preferred the bushy one after the water

Yes fence 3 ? I thought I'd do a run from 2 to 3 (Buzz having jumped the 50 version fine in the hunter trial) and he was like, what?! And did the spectacular standstill cat leap, a group of women walking on the course saw and I said "you didn't see that!" To them ? I think you're right, not only is it in the brow of the hill but does look a bit spiky!
