There are MANY people around, prob 40's upwards who have had dun's over the years.
Heck, I've had a few lovely ones- chocolate, biscuit, silver, mouse, golden to name a few varieties within the Connie, Exmoor and Highland studbooks etc
NOT everyone has access to the internet, nor do they bother to keep abreast of items in horse magazines or breed newsletters, nor are they sent fact sheets to be told that what they have used as a description of colour for many years, has been updated to something else......
Go easy Mrs - and others on here who are very scathing of people using 'traditional' terms, have a bit of perspective and perhaps help to get info out there instead of belittling others eh?

My mare is wrongly passported as "dun" when she is in fact buckskin. I was not aware of the difference when I passported her. It didn't help that at the time she had counter shading which looked like a dorsal stripe!

OP: the correct term would be Buckskin, but would be termed dun (traditionally, but wrongly!) by the connemara society

In response to the Fuzzy Furry - my main wish is that the Vets and PIO's get the colour right. As I said earlier, the identification document should match the horse.
Otherwise it doesn't really matter really, in fact my grey spent the first year I owned being called pink or strawberry roan by most people. I would say that she was grey and they wouldn't believe me, so I left it. Her passport says chestnut/grey and she has greyed out more now, much to their surprise.

As Faracat has mentioned, DNA tests have moved on. It's simply the fact that not everyone seems to get that what used to be known as a 'dun' is actually a buckskin so people continue to use the incorrect terminology.
I shall throw a little party when the majority actually start to get this right. As the owner of a buckskin (Connie x ID), I am forever trying to correct people, though I did have a new livery run up to me the other day and say 'I love duns, I love duns, awwww, I love duns!' I was dying a little on the inside.
If said horse was mine, I'd be passporting it as sooty buckskin and not give it another thought.
As a side note; Faracat, will you marry me?

Well even at my great age I'm always happy to learn but now I'm a bit confused! Our connie was described as yellow dun (her name in gaelic was yellow Girl) she had a dorsal stripe and primitive markings, I thought this was a dilution of the bay gene?

It is - just cream rather than dun. I'm sure that markings and dorsal stripe would be down to Sooty. I've seen photos of a bay arab with this (no cream or dun genes) and it was Sooty causing the markings.

No connemara's are actually dun. And a dorsal stripe is not an indicator of being dun. 2 true Duns crossed will never produce a blue eyed cream, but cross 2 "dun" Connies and you have a 25% chance of a B.E.C
But if you tried to put "buckskin" on a Connies passport (in ireland) you'd probably get laughed out of town...

So what we need is for the Irish Connemara Society PIO to grow some balls, put on their cleated boots and stomp out the colour misidentification. I guess it wont happen soon.

Could I totally thread hijack with all these colour experts around and ask someone my mares colour? (if someone could also tell me how to post a photo, lol!). She's passported as dark bay but shes got white splodgy bits, looks black in winter and very dapply in summer. Been told she's not a coloured but i'm not convinced by the 'dark bay' bit!

she's got loads of white under her belly and some under her chin kind of in the jaw groove. can't find anything that shows the dapples, grrrrrrrrrrrr

She has Sabino which is what gives her the jagged edged white markings (on legs, head, tummy etc...). It is a pinto/coloured gene, but I don't think that she has enough white on the body to count as a 'coloured' horse.
Do you think that she is black or bay when you look at her IRL? It's hard to tell from the photos as she looks black in one and dark bay in the other.

I think in winter she definitely looks black and in summer she looks v dark bay with dapples. When I clip her there's sort of lots of little fleckly white hairs which make her look greyer (not grey iyswim). (oh and how did you get my pics to show up properly?!)

The white flecks are also a Sabino thing.
She is definitely black based, with Sooty and Sabino. It's actually very hard to tell if she Agouti (causes bay), but you could get her DNA tested if you want to know for sure.
