Saw someone yesterday out hacking, riding a lovely small TB type, chestnut, really neat and tidy, very smartly turned out herself, the horse was so smart you could even tell it's tack was clean from a distance! Adequate, well fitting hi-viz. Just the job.
She was riding this beautiful horse with the reins at the buckle, with its nose on the ground, slopping along like an old donkey!
The woman she was out with, who was in the lead, was riding properly, but honestly, I was sorely tempted to say 'for goodness sake pick her up of the floor before she falls over and breaks her knees!

Aarg! Pet hate!

What's yours?

When horses jog. It drives me mad, especially when the people i hack with all let there horses jog on to catch up with the others, it just annoys me.

HUGE pet hate is little kids getting on poor ponies and galloping them around straight away, makes my blood boil, especially when their parents dont say a word! x

I dont mind seeing people out enjoying themselves mooching up the road holding the reins at the buckle
confused.gif

I personally keep a bit of a contact on my cob as he can catch you out going past a scary bush or boulder.

Mine is a harsh bit, with a grackle/flash, then friggin spurs

One or the other!
Its the kids that are constantly booting the horse and then jabbing it in the mouth as the have no sense of balance

Relaxed is fine, this horse was on its nose, on a tarmac road

Maybe it is just me, I'm not awfully keen on sloppy riding, even out hacking, but there's relaxed and there's accident waiting to happen, as far as I'm concerned.

Probs just a bugbear of mine

Working at a riding school, I obviously see a lot of beginners and young kids learning to ride, and my absolute pet hate is seeing someone lose their balance and haul on the reins to pull themselves back into position. It doesn't happen very often, because we don't let kids hold the reins until they can keep their balance without, but when it does I'm tempted to sock the child (or adult!) in the teeth and see how they like it.

Storm in a tea cup, people that ride Bear cant believe how sharp he is lol
But I love him like that, keeps me on my toes

If the horse works well in the school why not give it the rein and relax whilst out hacking, horses need wind down time too....

But my pet hate is seeing people towing horses in ifor williams trailers with the top front door open going faster than just a country lane, I've seen horses try to evade the oncoming wind and not be able to get their head away from it, looking very distressed, and what if a stone were to be tossed up and hit one on the head???.....

I dont use HI VIZ...i see no need, we Live in the middle of nowhere, and i only ride once, mid-day....soo urm, ye..my pet hate...Hmm...i could be here forever and a day but to start off, i absolutly hate riders who look anothers up and down and turn their noses up and lecture how their tack should fit, and how the horse should look etc and all that milarci, when all the while, their horse is far from perfect, and has far to many fancy unessacery tack/gadgets on, and probably far to fat!!!
tongue.gif

people with poor lower leg postions wearing spurs....

People not taking a good line into a fence and then beating the horse when it doesnt jump!

People that leave their horse tied on the yard which probably seems like forever for the horse (and prob feel forgotten!)

A very sweet but strangely clueless person on my yard proceeded to hose his unclipped horse down from head to toe and then put a cooler on it and leave it. I cringed.

I hate to see someone I know who tacks her horse up an hour before she rides, buggers off to make/drink a cup of coffee, leaves the mare with her headcollar round her neck tied on a 6ft long loose rope and then when she does eventually ride she goes off with the martingale neck strap round her ears, and her brushing boots on the wrong way round and so high that they cut into the back of her knees. I hate that she trots/canters for 95% of her 2 hour hack on an unfit horse then whinges because her mares legs fill overnight. I hate that she had the mare clipped out then takes her galloping in a thick padded exercise sheet and then does nothing when the mare comes home dripping with sweat. I hate seeing horses taken out of their box first thing in the morning after spending a night with inadequate hay, tied up for hours without a small haynet whilst their owner gossips/whines/drinks coffee. I HATE seeing my wheelbarrow being used by the coffee-swilling afore mentioned person, and my poop scoop, when there are no others available for me. I detest it when said horse is tied up outside my box so that I am constantly having to shove mare out of the way, or run the gauntlet of leading my placid mare past her as she threatens to kick us. Oh, and I hate my feeding regime/mucking out preferences/grooming likes/schooling dissected to the 969769766th degree every frigging time I am at the yard.

I could go on but I think I ought to stop for now.

Ha ha me too! I'm always careful to make sure I ride horses who's thighs are bigger than mine

I also hate to see horses being kept 'between hand and leg' by the rider kicking and twitching the reins every single stride
confused.gif

...must admit I take hacking as an opportunity to let the horse relax and stretch so more often that not will seen walking at buckle end
shocked.gif

I hate to see people not riding their horses "forward" on the roads, - just dawdling along, yacking and meandering about the road. Plus, riding forward gets your horse nice and fit, easily.

Roads are dangerous FFS,

And Yes!!!! you need your stirrup irons! - (to my very good friend, who has been told to ride without them when hacking!?!?!!)

Horses spook, and mine looks like a pit pony if he is not ridden out *between hand & leg*, plus I, as an old curmudgeon have no balance left, so need to be going "forward" as I don't easily do "backwards" or "sideways" anymore.
