What is your bargepole breed?

Anything bully / brachy / toy / so overbred it’s deformed. Also catahoula leopard dogs - met a couple recently and my word were they mean.
Lots of dogs that I would never have now as I can’t give them the life the need.

I'm not a fan of anything that doesn't look like a dog. I don't mind how big or small, but it needs dog-like proportions, medium length fur and preferably ears that go upwards.

And no labradors - can't get on with their temperaments and they are just so common. "Oh, you got a labrador? How terribly interesting." "Ah you're getting a cocker spaniel to go with your labrador? Marvellous, simply marvellous. Never seen that before"

I embrace sheddy noise specialists with pointy ears and I like doing things with dogs that aren’t supposed to do the things, or at least not supposed to be a natural choice for the things, so labradors/collies/cockers are out.

Absolute bargepole I’d-rather-not-have-a-dog-at-all-if-this-was-the-last-choice-on-the-planet is anything brachycephalic.

I have a brachycephalic dog, and it's not soo bad, but I will say she's not like an extreme snub nose and has a good "beak" on her. Honestly, not much different to a friend's Lab, oddly enough. He's sort of blocky in the head.

Generally I don't like brachycephalic breeds though.

Any bull breed or bull breed crosses, any doodles as I don’t like their coats , and those hairless ones or the ones with strange coats like the corded coats of the Puli… old English sheepdogs , akitas , cane corso, St Bernard , Newfoundland , the list goes on , best to say which breeds I like which are mainly sighthounds and terriers,

and I forgot I like Rotties and GSDs but too old to have them

As an owner of a malamute can confirm they do whatever they want, wether you like it or not

We have half a sheddy noise specialist dog at the moment. I think it's the other half, whatever it is, that makes her a nice enough dog to manage. She does like making noise though and I assume she likes shedding as well as she's never done with it. I'm not sure we could cope with the full fat version.

I’m not a terrier person and would never have a dog that looks like it’s been chasing parked cars (brachy breeds). Also Cane Corso, I’ve known three and they’ve all been so lovely but 2 died of heart problems including my mums who had a huge heart attack, both under 2 years old.

Pretty much any terrier, but most especially jack russells. In my experience, they are all Independent little b*ggers who never come back when called, vastly prefer their own species to humans and don’t care if you live or die, as long as they get fed. Deliberately antagonistic and every single one I’ve met has oppositional defiant disorder in spades.

That's probably a fair description of terriers That said I'd never be without one again. We had a period when we didn't have a terrier in the house and realised that life is just much more fun with one (or two).

For me it's all the toy breeds - they do absolutely nothing for me, I don't even find them cute at all (and I find the vast majority of animals cute). They leave me cold and I have no idea why.

I wouldn’t have labs, spaniels and most definitely no golden retrievers. Labs do nothing for me, spaniels are too frenetic and golden retrievers are just so irritatingly happy and well behaved! No brachy breeds, large bull breeds or mastiffs( do love a proper staffy though), Akitas, Shar peis or large herding breeds like the Anatolian.

Totally agree! Goose is snuggled along my arm currently, Bear is flat out on one of the multiple beds, Mitch is shadowing my OH who’s making late breakfast. This lot have their mad moments, but stimulating exercise (like your training walks) keeps our lot happy. Their latest favourite game is playing with the glow balls-balls that glow after exposure to a light. We have 2 and they absolutely love chasing round with one each in their gob in the evening.

Having dog sat a friend's leonberger for a few days I'm another in the no giant, long haired, droolers camp!

There are quite a lot of breeds I wouldn't have but mostly not because I don't like them per se. It's more that I know that I wouldn't be a good owner for them / they wouldn't be a good fit for our household. One of the thing I like about the forum is getting a peek into life with breeds that I admire but would never have myself, so thanks to all who share!

My friend that has two Tibetan Mastiffs, used to have Leonbergers but that was a long time ago now. She had the Leos before they got popular. She wouldn't touch one now as their popularity has bred in too many health problems. She then chose TMs because they are a very old breed and not too much tampered with although that is changing. They are lovely dogs but wouldn't be for me, too big, too hairy and not trainable enough.

umm...Kelpie? I know some people aren't a fan of them. Pointers seem to have got off lightly, and the small to mid-sized spitz breeds. Poodle? Dalmatian?
