What is your bargepole breed?

I love terriers because everyone's assumptions about them mean that they view mine as very well trained lol. Any other type/breed and I would be outed as a pretty s**t dog trainer. That is also the strategy I have used prevously with sight and scent hounds too...

Why do you think I have 2 terriers and a lurcher 😀

My friend that has two Tibetan Mastiffs, used to have Leonbergers but that was a long time ago now. She had the Leos before they got popular. She wouldn't touch one now as their popularity has bred in too many health problems. She then chose TMs because they are a very old breed and not too much tampered with although that is changing. They are lovely dogs but wouldn't be for me, too big, too hairy and not trainable enough.
Ive only ever seen one TM in real life, he looked like a massive lion! Very cute.
I embarrassed myself asking the owner if it was a newfoundland 🤦‍♀️

I think the what I would have list is shorter lol.
Wouldn't have any bracchy ones for health reasons, don't like small noisy dogs, jrts are a definite no from me, I'm too boring for the high energy spaniels, collies and huskies. Not a big fan of drool so that rules a few more out, cockerpoos are a big no probably because FIL has one and it's spoiled rotten and just annoys me. Ones that tend to be genetically quite aggressive / unpredictable like Caucasian sheps / American bully's/ cane corso. Not sure that leaves very much 😅

These are my friend's two. Not as big as a Newfie and don't drool as much. The older one doesn't drool at all but sadly the younger, bigger one does. As a breed they don't usually.

Just for @ArklePig

What is your wouldn't touch with a bargepole breed and why? Perhaps try not to be too insulting in your replies! ;)

Anything Brachy...I grew up with Boxers but couldn't own one now. Also couldn't have Pugs, frenchies etc I'd not want to be encouraging the breeding of them. I saw a truly awful bulldog yesterday, it had sooo much loose skin, big ropes over it's nose, it's breathing was horrific just walking around and it had very red, sore feet, poor thing I felt so bad for it. I also wouldn't toch an XL bully or Akita with someone else's bargepole, just too dangerous and unpredictable

They are lovely 😊
They are and very good natured. The older one is completely atypical for a TM, they are normally rather aloof dogs but she loves everyone. The other is more reserved and needs introductions before allowing fuss, even knowing her I wouldn't walk into the house uninvited. Both brilliant with other dogs even tiny ones. If any dog threatens the older one she hides behind her owner.

Staffies, my horse got attacked and bitten by one in a prolonged attack whilst out hacking and then years later my favourite hen scramble got bitten and leg broken and she had to be pts when one climbed over our sheepwired five bar gate. Anything like that type of dog, especially XL Bully scares me stupid.

And I'm sorry if I offend but I really don't like those husky dogs with the weird eye colours.
Feel free to critique my hound though. 😆😁

Your dog is lovely.

Anything yappy and neurotic. My mother's cocker-poo is the worst of both breeds and I'd happily have a cocker. Actually, given how short her nose is (the cocker-poo's, not my mother's), I do wonder if my mother was sold a pup and she (the cocker-poo, not my mother) is poodle x King Charles. But by jingos the damned dog's bark is annoying. And she's neurotic. Although she doesn't mind children.

I have quite a long list.

Giant dogs - including but not limited to Leonbergers, Tibetan Mastiffs, St Bernards. Not including Newfoundlands
Fugly dogs - Cane Corso, bullies of all sizes
Squashed dogs - French bulldogs, pugs, boxers, those ones that look like hairy footstools
Intimidatingly clever dogs - border collies, malinois, jagdterriers
Unhealthy breeds - cavalier King Charles spaniels, shar pei, dachshunds
Scary breeds - Akitas, Chinese red dog, husky, malamutes, known fighting breeds, any large LGD
Miscellaneous - labradors, cocker spaniels, GSDs, Weims, Vizlas

I also wouldn't own a poodle mutt (I am unlikely to get a poodle but they aren't a bargepole breed for me, but the many many crosses are an absolute firm no).

Out of curiosity, what does that leave?

No one has mentioned schnauzers.. I’m seriously thinking about getting a medium schnauzer.I’m on my second mini schnauzer and genuinely smitten.
Heart, hips and elbows would need to be certified in parents, and I’ve heard mixed reports about their trainabity, compared with the giants and minis.
Anyone had one?

There’s a lot of info on arklepig’s thread about her friend looking for a first dog. Seems they have major health issues. Are the standards different?
