I love it! It is similar to my pony's massive tail. I leave my pony's tail alone completely in winter, it gets a bit muddy and looks a bit scraggy but it doesn't matter. In summer he regularly has it washed and I spray it with detangler and keep it brushed.

Keep it plaited or plait it and bag it. If you pull it then you will have to keep it pulled forever as with a tail that thich the bog brush effect of the pulled part growing back would be extraordinary!

Have you tried thinking scissors, it would take a little bit of the thicknes out but not lots.

Its a lovely full tail, gorgeous some people have to buy false tails to get such results!
I would just bang the bottom off about 4 inches below hocks and pull the sides at the top for now until show time.
Then if your horse is plaited or hogged or whatever you can decide what looks best then.
If thats him/her in your signature then I guess he is a cob so you could just pull it and shorten the length.
You can never have too much tail IMO.

The spooky pony's tail is like that! I section it into 4, and brush out each section with lots of Mane and Tail about once a week. I had to chop off about 6 inches after only 2 months, because it was dragging on the ground again.

If he doesn't seem bothered by it, I'd leave it long and thick, and make everyone else jealous!

I'd leave it and manage it as best you can, once you start pulling it, it will go all bushy and look a mess.
I know its probably a pain, but my god it looks lovely just as it is.
Sorry this is probably not what you wanted to hear ! LOL

its beautiful, my poor lad has no tail, even after a year of not brushing it and him on biotin etc, its really thin and his forelock is non-existant, poor baby, he'd kill for a tail like that!!

What a great tail, I would leave it alone apart from trimming the bottom when needed. Wish my sweet itch pony had a mane and tail like that!

I would just cut the bottom a bit shorter, and leave the thickness. What breeding is your pony? If he or she is a native then you should really leave it 'au natural' as much as possible.

Can you take some off and send it as a present to Sarah on my old yard, her poor ponies tail got eaten nd has never grown back he has about 100 strands approx 12" long it looks like a forlock rather than a tail. I know shed be really pleased

noooo dont use a brush or comb through the tail!! that will break the hairs!

the only way to do a tail is to use your fingers and seperate it manually!!

looks way better when done!

You have my empathy mik. I've just started a violent campaign to grow it, as I've had her 10months and I swear it hasn't grown a mm! - it gets washed and conditioned in TreSemme Salon Silk (the most moisturising one they do) and then smothered in a leave in conditioner. I keep it plaited all the time to stop it breaking off, and spray it every so often with Lynne Russells Quick Tails.
I've been doing that about a fortnight now, and it is already looking much healthier

shes irish sports pony but on her passport it says IDxTBx so i guess shes got some other native irish breed in her

if you want some tail for your wispy ones let me know and i'll post it on!!

we have plenty of xs and willing to share!!

I would also leave it (but trim a bit shorter). My mare has a similar tail and my friends say it is really useful to identify us at a competition - it seems most event horses are bays, but not many have a tail like that! Makes us easy to spot!

Keep it! and invest in lots of detangler and a good tail brush

Halve it and sell it!! They do real horse hair (don't think about where it came from) false tails in Derby House for £100!!!

Perhaps it depends on the brush

or the hands using it

I've always brushed my girl's and it is sleek and lovely

If I used my fingers I'd never have time to ride!!

My welshie has thick tail too, takes ages to brush/finger through. Cowboy magic conc is amazing, better than anything else I have found and worth the price.

I Cut mine up to near hocks at the start of the winter to keep it out the way for hunting and xc (and he doesn't like it flicking up and banging his willy in the wet!) and don't touch it in the winter unless i am going somewhere posh so will have a wash and brush

it then grows back to a sensible length in the spring ready for showing and the drier weather and it is all really good hair
