Who's Horses are out naked today?

Wow Princesssparkle, we all need pictures of that! How is your lad not lathered and passed out??
I have just been up to my girls, both my hairy old girl and my blanket clipped little mare have sweaty armpits(They are unrugged today), and theres a good breeze on top of the hill. My filly (coming 9months) will probably stay unrugged tonight if it stays mild.
Melly - the old lady - really really feels the cold, and will colic if not rugged up well, but the only time she would have the amount of rugs your lad has on is in deepest winter. We are talking -4 and below....
 
Mines naked! Trace clipped as well. It's reckon it's about 16 degrees here... and she would have been out naked in the day last week except I needed her clean for riding / I wouldn't be home in the daylight.

She wasn't sweaty when I took her rug off but she wasn't moving around much (eating perfectly fine) & she gets rainscald type sores when she has a rug on & she's too hot (got them already) even if she has no visible signs of sweating.
 
sorry, whats disgusting about a horse thats a comfortable temp, out in the field?

i do keep all mine well rugged, more rugged than most on HHO, but they are never sweaty, never itchy and thus never uncomortable.

when its much much warmer they DO go out un rugged (albeit CS has to have a fly rug on 99% of the time as he goes ballistic running the fence if even one fly buzzes round him).
 
My three are all out naked today, two clipped one not, it's 14 degrees here and the sun has been shining all day, they were pleased to be able to have a good roll in the mud! :p not so good for me but hey ho atleast they are happy :)

There's nothing about that that could be classed as 'well' rugging! Everything is disgusting about it - unless your horse is some sort of robot then I doubt very much that your horse is comfortable - not least by the sheer amount of rugs you have on nevermind the heat! Why don't you go and sit outside in 14 degrees with a thermal vest, t shirt, two jumpers and a jacket on in the sunshine and see whether you are comfortable?!!
 
PS, what does CS stand for? (If indeed it stands for anything?) I had a flick through some of your posts and I couldn't see him referred to by a "full" name... I'm just nosy :o

refers to the fact that he is completely un-spookable once in the ring, never ever gets distracted.
admittedly he isnt very sensible sometimes, but his focus in the ring is incredible.

his proper name is Prophet's Star, stable name Pea.

moomin-if the horse isnt hot/sweaty......................it isnt over warm,if it isnt over warm, it isnt uncomfortable.honestly, calm down!
 
My TB is out in a HW, it's quite dull and grey here. It was sunny this morning and had I been home he would have been naked for a while but can't risk it when I am out all day. TBH he would probably be fine in a MW or even a LW but the horse I have taken on is wearing that so I haven't got anything else for him to wear :o Will have to have a switch around tomorrow I think!

Should add he is not too hot in his HW!
 
I have 4 naked anyway, but Mystique is now derobed and Maje has had a naked afternoon being groomed by the ponies :)

Ha! Thanks for that, made me chuckle :D Prophet's Star is much more the sort of name you'd expect to look at him ;)
 
Having owned a 3/4 TB before, I REALLY still fail to see why some TB owners think that their horses are going to melt/explode/die if they don't have 5 rugs on when the temps are anything below 15 degrees?!! My ex boyfriend's parent breed racehorses and not ONE of theirs goes out in ANY weather with a rug on. That's heavily in foal mares too. They were all perfectly healthy and kept weight on because they were fed accordingly. Fair enough, when clipped yes, rug, but one decent heavyweight rug with neck would surely suffice instead of piling them on layer upon layer. Princesssparkle have you ever tried removing one of the many rugs your horse has on?!! What happens?! Do you honestly and truly believe your horse would SHIVER if you took a few rugs off in 14 degree temps?! Seriously?!

It has cooled down here now and started raining. I won't be rushing up to the yard to put my horse's rug on. She will stay naked. And tonight too. I am pretty sure she will still be alive and well in the morning...

It's worth bearing in mind that horses adjust to their climates to a degree - they grow less coat / less quickly if they're kept warm and grow woollier if they're un-rugged. My HW cob has been in MWs this winter (sometimes with under rugs) despite being largely unclipped - because he has always worn rugs and doesn't grow a coat sufficient to keep him warm - he is conditioned to need rugs. If you keep horses outside naked / lightly rugged from their early youth, many will adjust to that, but if you condition your horse to accept rugging, they can adjust to that too. We are talking about a fully clipped TB, not a native or a hairy TB.

I hate seeing over-rugged horses, who are clearly struggling in the heat too - I used to see them on liveries, belonging to owners who were inconsistent in their rugging patterns - you could see the horses sweating and standing listlessly, not grazing. However, one presumes PS is capable of checking to see if her horse is sweating or not :cool: If he were that over-rugged, he would drop condition through sweating and, whilst I rarely visit CR, even I am familiar with the multitude of photos in there which suggest otherwise.
 
im trying to produce the horse to GP, he works very hard, gives it 100%.

1.as stated i dont buy £100 of feed and £100 of haylage a month so he can shiver it off.
2. i dont work him to be loose and supple so he can stand braced and tense against grim weather.
3.he needs to look the part, sleek and shiney.rugless=coarse filthy coats at this time of year (not in the heat of summer).


absolutely none of the pro yards i know will be ejecting their horses nakes today,thats eventing as well as dressage.

what work exactly does yours do moomin, id be interested to know if you are producing a horse to the same level of competition as CS, because if not, its apples and oranges.

Hmm. Whilst I don't question your ability to look after your horses at all, if you tell me they aren't over hot I believe you, this is really not true. A horse is a horse I'm afraid. They all eat and **** the same. The work they do has very little bearing on whether it is acceptable to over rug or not (not saying you are here). You are just trying to use the level you compete at to imply you know better which completely devalues your argument in my eyes. Which is a shame as I thought your argument of 'they aren't hot, I've checked' was pretty sound.


O well, at least I know what CS stands for now. And I agree, there won't be many fully clipped, fit horses out nekkid quite yet. ;)

No I'm not thankfully. Each to their own suppose.
It is obviously all about how they look rather than their comfort.

Just a point though - your horse is fully clipped therefore surely he wouldn't get coarse filthy coat? And I never said don't rug - I just suggested that in 14 degrees 600g of rugs piled on is excessive.
 
I hate you all!

It has been 7 degrees here all day, but the wind is quite bitter so feels much colder. Add to that the fact that we have been sat in a cloud for the last couple of days and have either had heavy rain or heavy drizzle, it is not very nice :(

Fat Lad has been naked all winter anyway, but I was hoping to get Bailey's MW off and let her have a good roll in the mud. We will have to wait a bit longer :)

I wouldn't expect anyone to turn out a fully clipped horse naked in 14c (although depends on age, degree of regrowth and breed) but I bet none of the pro yards have horses out in 600g at 14c either.
 
No jess im not, im saying that if moomin is used to hardy hairy types, she may not appreciate that a fit blood horse, fully clipped to within an inch of its life and used to spending at least 12hours stabled out the wind etc , is not going to be happy naked in these temps.

the argument for keeping their back and muscles warm is also more valid in ref to competition horses were every inch counts, than a horse that mainly hacks at gentle speeds etc.

oh and in case moomin didnt see it-they HAVE been checked, and they are NOT hot :)

moomin-even clipped coats can *stare* and look dull and coarse if the horse gets cold.............and mud sticks to clipped or unclipped surely?!

its about how they look, as long as i can keep them healthy as well-in case you also didnt read the bit about never being sweaty or itchy ;)
 
Just for your info I have never had a hairy native horse!! I have had a 3/4 tb, a welsh/arab/tb cross, and now have a warmblood type mare who is chase clipped.

I couldn't give a monkey's ass if they get mud on them - it's called elbow grease. Rugging (and particularly not with 4 or 5 rugs at once adding up to 600g on a 14 degree day) is not an excuse for just keeping a horse looking clean and sparkly. I still am gobsmacked that you think your horse would shiver in those temps if you dared take any of the rugs off!! How about just leaving a HW combo on if you are worried about mud?

Out of interest, at what temp would you be removing any of those rugs?

Perhaps you should post a photo of the rather delectable CS just so we can see with our own eyes what a mistreated chap he is ;)

And for the record, I am just glad he goes out... I don't think many horses competing at his level get regular time in the field at all, with or without rugs. I personally wouldn't put that many on anything (and I am used to fit blood horses) but if you're all happy then really, who gives a monkey's?!

Agreed. Especially that at least he gets out.

But what do I know - I have hairy natives, never had a blood horse, and I've never competed above novice :cool: :D

(I put all my MW rugs away yesterday till next winter... Jinxing it or what? :D)
