Im the bad one that doesnt work but owns horses...!!!! I have a very severely disabled 4 year old daughter who has life limiting problems. I cannot work as Im a full time carer. My horses are average type horses aling with a couple of rescues. They live out 24/7 on very cheap land which I rent with a friend. Most of their tack/equipment is 2nd hand and I work hard to juggle it all. I have depression so the horses keep me sane, esp when Im struggling with my daughters problems. However, I do not drink/smoke/buy fancy clothes/have a social life...every penny not going on my daughter or bills goes on my horses :)

Well I had experience of the bossy know it all type today!

There is a lady at our yard who is very experienced but a bit of a snake in the grass I've always thought as she's always criticising others behind their backs.

I'm a bit of a novice and have had my own horse for 8 weeks. I was schooling today, practising the moves my instructor had given me, ready for my lesson on Monday when other owners turn up and start giving me instructions "head up, heels down etc" and then the know it all asks to have a go on my horse, which I agree to as she is a good rider.

As she walks away on my horse I can see her head turned and she's pulling faces at one of the other owners who shouts "Ooh well your horse is walking quicker for Lucy". I felt like telling them to Foxtrot Oscar 'cos I know exactly what's happened - I was ambling round the school minding my own business with the Witches of Eastwick watching and Lucy will have said "I can't bear this" before going off go get her hat to get on my horse and show how clever she is.

I will do my schooling at a different time of day from now on, when the others aren't around!

Catpawn - to me that seems like a clear form of bullying. A horrible way to behave !! I would try and steer clear of them, and if they offer "help and advice" just say you'll ask your instructor. If it carries on, speak to the YO. Jeeeez.

I had another full on encounter with the "I'm still in a massive strop Sunday Rider" today. No-one would ride with her, so she couldn't ride, and boy, did she let me and hubs (totally innocent of any wrongdoing) know it. We tried to avoid her by bringing the lad in a bit early tonight, and just drove off up the drive as she was coming down it -

Look its dead simple - if someone asked for a ride on my husband the answer would be a big fat foxtrot oscar - only let folk ride your horse that you want and at your request"

Is there a stereotype for the yard person that reads your posts online, takes them completely out of context, goes tittle-tattling to the yard and stirs up trouble needlessly, sits back with a grin like a cheshire cat and watches the resulting fireworks ?? I think SNAKE IN THE GRASS comes to mind!!

You and I have obviously met then.

How about these then

THE DSS HORSE OWNER. Is on benefits, usually has at least 4 children by different fathers. Lives in quite a nice home, paid for by the DSS, constantly moans about how little benefits she gets but manages to afford a horse. When asked why she doesnt get a job (it is always a she by the way), tells you that her kids are her job and they would need to pay her mega bucks to make it worth her while, plus she would need to sell her horse, and why should she work anyway (has never worked since she left school as had first baby at 17). Has a nice horse, always buys it new things, kids play noisily around the yard, is always at the yard as well.

Know WAY TO MANY of these! always have more than everyone else who works their arse off!

Does anyone have one of these?

THE SHOUTER:

Always shouting at her horse, most common phrases to hear being screamed at rather well behaved horse is "move over", "get back", "Stand", "stop", "get off", "wait", etc etc.... always has a well behaved to average horse that must be deaf by now

What about the plain old yard B (insert swear word) they're always two faced, go around dissing everyone elses horses, thinks the world envolves around them. They spread gossip and as soon as something goes wrong for you they have an awful smirk splattered across their face!

Just a quick note for all the DSS bashers... Not all of us (appreciate there are some who are) like the idea of being on benefits but life has kicked us in the teeth somehow and that's how we've ended up. So please don't tar us all with the same brush :)

The ones who's horse is injured and don't have ANY first aid kit, so end up "borrowing" yours and saying I'll get you some more. Then don't, then when pony/horse injurs themselves again come straight to you as you helped out last time and you don't mind..... usally just after you have paid a fortune on replacing the last "borrowed" bit of first aid!!! You never say anything as you cannot think of poor horse/pony not getting help because you didn't "lend" their owner the first aid kit!!!!!!!!

Tbh, unless your info on benefits comes from the daily mail, I would have thought most people would realise that anyone living the life of riley on benefits is on the fiddle. They really aren't an amazing quality of life. So all these well off dss horse owners aren't doing so well on handouts. Either they're on the fiddle with another income, or they have huge debts.

Believe me, being on any kind of benefits is no fun :(
I HATE not being able to work (up until I got pregnant I have always worked but life dealt me a nasty blow and I landed up in a hostel etc, long story), my social life is nil because its hard to get out to meet people due to my commitments to my daughter. She is only 4 but has a long history of being in and out of hospital, almost dying twice (literally) and life can be tough and unpredictable. Not to mention the fact that my little girl is life limited meaning she may not reach adulthood.
I would swap EVERYTHING I have to live a NORMAL life, working etc than living on benefits and having my beautiful daughter go through the things she does.
Im NOT after a sympathy vote or anything else, just reminding some people that there are some honest people on benefits that simply cannot help their situation. Yes I have horses (and parrots and dogs) and yes Im on benefits but EVERY spare penny I have pays for my animals as they are my sanity.
Those dole dossers and scroungers that simply cannot be bothered really make me angry as they give the ones of us who cannot help our situations a bad name :(:(:(:(

Aww HHH so sorry to hear about your troubles. People like yourself really cannot help what happens. Its the ones who doss about all day and say they wont get a job as theyre better on benefits etc that are the annoying ones :D Trust me, my Bro is one of those (although doesnt have a horse obvs). He sits around on his arse up country all day and when the slightest thing happens in the family down here in Cornwall he starts playing god almighty moaning at me and my bro. We both hold down full times jobs, i have the horse and my bro has kids, and he sits up there preaching and saying he cannot possibly come down here to help, when there is nothing stopping him. He hasnt had a job for years and has no intention of getting one as he sits on the bleddy x box all day :D

What about..

The New Girl
Horse arrives before she really has all the right kit, rugs take a few days to arrive, new horse rips new rugs :p Tries to get to know everyone but for the life of her is hopeless at remembering the names and resorts to calling by the horse names instead. Hasnt quite got the hang of riding with others in an areana so insists on asking if its ok to canter etc. Has to check several times if she has put the keys in the correct places and worries that she hasnt switched somthign off..

Thats me...

Buys everything the same as you, does everything you do. If you're working on Shoulder in, she is too. Possibly badly. If you're leg yielding, she is too - towards you.

If you're schooling flying changes, then guess what, she is too. With the added excitement of almost colliding... GRRRR

Ohh yes these ones, they have been to 'college' and played ponies and now think they know everything and can tell you what to do!! I think I learnt more in pony club than what some colleges teach!

'Some colleges' ;)

I was an equine student and I believe I was lucky enough to go to the best Land Based college and had 3 of the most wonderful tutors who did everything they could to prepare you for the real equine working world. Including shoving you off to work with showjumpers when you were a whole term ahead of your class mates....

We've got one of those ....... However, they copycat everything that you buy, everything that you intend to do with your horse and if you do it better than them, god help you. If you are lucky enough to have sponsorship (my daughter is), they go off and get their saddle cloths and rugs embroidered with the name of a relative's company to make it look like they are sponsored (yes, this is really true).

Yes, definitely some not all :p

That sounds really good, the only ones I know of around here just get the students to muck out and do general yard duties, ride sometimes and do theory about horse care. I think its the same in all subjects though, some colleges just don't prepare you for the real world! (I don't really think mine did!)

Gone slightly off subject here... Sorry :p

haha! Although my FIL has said he'd pay for some classes etc if I wore his stuff. But I don't like his colour scheme :D

What's hilarious about the two know it all's on our yard, is that they get together to beef about everyone else's carp horse skills, and then separately, they slate each other too!!:D:D

THE EX-RACER RIDER/WORK RIDER

Can't tell one end of a school from the other, collection?? what's that!! Has a spring to rival a hare when legged up, rides better with stupidly short stirrups or none at all, all whilst holding a prancing TB on the buckle . Accessorized with skull cap, silk (more points for a pom pom or attached goggles) and blouson jacket. Usually seen with multi coloured socks poking out above their boots, although you have to be quick to catch them as they gallop past in a blur, bum in the air, with bridged reins, whistling the 'Champions' theme.

Yes this is me. Sorry.

Love this!! It is me too - but I generally ride out in (smart) jeans so my socks are hidden from view. Remarks like on the bridle, jibbing, upsides, whipping round etc are lost on others!! The ability to memorise and understand every horses pedigree on the yard (150 at the flat yard I worked at).
