i loan a 24yo connie x & she is still in normal work, jumps when owner comes to visit (i dont jump now due to health) hacks regually and goes out showing (ridden/inhand) she is like a tank and by god do you know when you have been on a hack with her as she is so forwards.
but love her dearly...
and a very understanding partner when you are called out a 4am because the darling has escaped AGAIN.
they are not nicknamed Sh!$lands without good reasons :)
carpet just laid onto topsoil although we did scrape the very soft top stuff back (couple of inches worth) laid the carpet in big sections overlapping & then filled.
we had lots of old carpet put down & then a good 8-10 inches of woodchip put on top, it was a good turnout area in very bad weather & worked fine as it was a small space & they couldnt race about on it (was also big enough to lunge in up to a decent speed trot)
we topped it every couple of...
i dont tie up but leave long rope passed though, the boy is too scared of his own shadow to move & big lass has too many manners.
if i need to go get anything i will pop them back into stable for a min or so.
when we are out in horsebox i have safety leads that clip straight onto the ring...
i ended up teathering my old little sec A as she was a sod for getting out, 8 strands on tape/wire mix diddnt deter her, stock fencing she went through eventually by just keep pushing it (even when eletrifed strand added) & the last straw was watching her attempt to go through a 5ft brick wall...

Janet Rodgers who used to run the film horses company of the same name must have been in her 70s back 10 years ago when i first met her & was still riding, working & doing stunts. she also had tha ability to make the entire yard stand stock still in fear when she shouted (horses, staff & clients)
im finding the same thing whilst looking for a loan pony/horse, happily looking for a semi retired plod for the odd days im well enough to have a potter & keep getting timewasters offering unsuitable animals.
dont you just love the rubberneckers that give the game away sat with the popcorn...
todays visit to a potential loan pony was sounding quite promising, quiet little 13h mare, been left in feild since last foal weaned 6 months back due to lack of light enough rider. got to see her and she is a sweet little bay with 4 whites & big wide blaze.
looks a lot younger than the 18yo...
not in the slightest, mine isnt even ride/drivable now at at only 12yo has a considirble time left to just be a pet. as i have him at livery it means we dont have much chance to ride or drive anymore but i dont care as he is my boy & i love him "useable" or not.
ive calmed down somewhat from last night now thankfully.
ive been there & done the sudden bucking thing thank you & now dont with to repeat it, i do have my tiny toosh covered in case of a fall but that doesnt cover the pain & trouble for me & the kids emotionally.
i shall keep looking...
