Private water supply. What do you do?

Ah yes I remember the freeze only to well.-10 at night, daily routine of breaking an inch of ice every morning on the pond to fill jerrys for the horses. (I just drank Brandy lol).I have a borehole at the yard and monitor usage like a hawk because the water table is very low.My stream is a...

    Flip Flops and Hooves

Yes i've heard the odd storey to but a good steel toe boot is well up to the pressure of even the heaviest horse imo.Having had my foot trodden on several times in the past with non safety boots on and it still ruddy hurt,I decided to stick with the 'safe' option.

    Flip Flops and Hooves

I live in steel toe wellies or riggers.Still not infallible though, the big lad stood on the top of my foot the other month missing the steel completely.I was limping for a week.As said, being aware is just as important.

    Your Horse Ghost Stories.

Not really a ghost storey but more of a presence.I lost my beloved Chester in April 2015.A closer bond with a horse is hard to imagine and I was devastated.A close friend, who is also a medium, was amazingly supportive and stayed with me most of the day.The things she passed on to me about his...

Is non branded feed as good?

As already stated get in the habit of label reading.Countrywide feeds are indeed made by Spillers or Westaway but there value chaff is actually a pound more than Molli extra.I do use the horse and pony mix they sell but it's more expensive than the Wessex mix they used to do which was better...

    Memory Lane

I came to horses much later in life than most.I learnt to ride at the tender age of 43 (now 50 er something lol) at Ruan Minor on The Lizard.Well i say learnt,it was more learning 'on the hoof' as it were with the instructor riding beside me.Rising trot within 10 mins of sitting on a horse for...

Has anyone successfully had planning for mobile home?

Perhaps get the largest touring caravan you can find. The biggest are 28/30 ft x 8ft wide(Hobby/Tabbert ect).Smallest static is 28ftx10ft so not a huge difference and then it is truly mobile. You could put forward a case as emergency accomadation for poorly horses.Animal husbandery is another good...

    Paddocks overrun by self heal

Every day a school day as they say.I've wondered for years what those purple wild flowers were in my fields.Just googled and found out a bit more about them.True the hosses don't touch them but they're not poisonous, just a little bitter to taste. We can eat them tho',boiled leaves in salads,make...

    Building my own stable cost?

As a rough guide I built a double 12x12 with pitched roof for approx £1400.Concrete base was already in place however.Concrete is pricey,i'm a bit out of touch these days but budget around £1000 per stable. (could be a saving if you dug the footings and then got it poured later.)Best to ring...

Best place to live in the UK with horses!

I moved to E Cornwall from Surrey nearly 10 years ago, bought a yard and have never looked back.Reasonable property prices away from the tourist hot spots, great riding (e.g. Bodmin Moor),lovely people, and a very horsey area. Not inundated with yards but lots of small private liveries.Worth a look!.

Utilize surplus heat from the muck heap

I often fantasize about doing this but the muckheap gets cleared spring and autumn so not practical for me.However, look on that well known auction site for gas powered camping showers.Just the same as the hot horse showers but less than half the price because they don't have 'horse' in the title...
