Feel miserable at the moment because I miss my horses. I wish there was somewhere nearby where I could keep my pony. Hank is not so important because he loves the retirement farm and he is retired due to unsoundness. There isn't anywhere I can keep Kippen because his care needs are too specific...
If a health condition such as obesity makes it impossible to ride a horse, then there are non-riding activities available with horses.
In a spirit of human cooperation and kindness, let's all think of activities that are suitable for larger people. Let us also not all recoil in horror when a...
I started this thread because a lot of people became very nasty in the 19stone thread about larger people. I appreciate that there are people who are too large to ride horses but wanted to point out that their weight should not exclude them from the horse world and that we horse people shouldn't...
My point is that horses aren't just about riding. There is showing in hand and carriage driving for example. There is owning a paddock ornament. There is volunteering at genuine horse rescue centres. If we all go "Oh my GOD, you're FAT. You MUST stay away from all horses until you lose weight"...
Cobs are too wide for me. My beloved Highland Pony is too wide for me. I have hip problems and find it much easier to ride a narrower horse. It is Kippen's personality that has kept him in my life and not his suitability as a riding horse for me.
This photo is from 2004. Have since discovered...
If you can walk, then horses can be for you. Shameless bump because I really do want people to think about how horses are for everyone and not just people of a certain weight and figure type.
Georgina Colthurst writer of the book 'Fighting Back'. Have read the book. Does anyone know anything about her please? A Google search gave me nothing but listings for her book.
England is a tiny land mass. Why does the horse have to be near you? Surely with England being so tiny, it's easy to easily drive to most parts of it and see horses. You are going to have this horse for quite a while so a drive of a few hours each way is nothing to ensure long term happiness.
Flirting and banter is common in the horse world and generally not to be taken seriously. Am guilty of having flirted with both my farrier and vet. Because this has been happening for a while and hasn't gone further, it is likely to be just banter.
If you grip with your thighs, you will force your seat up and out of the saddle. You want your weight to be dropping down through your legs and down into your heels. Sounds like you need riding lessons. It really helps to have eyes on the ground watching, guiding, teaching and giving feedback.
Richard Maxwell has a method of putting forward into a horse. I'll see if I still have the book.
Yep, still have it. The book is 'Unlock Your Horse's Talent in 20 minutes a day' by Richard Maxwell. The solution is on page 128. Brain is too tired to write an effective summary.
It might depend on bloodlines. My pony's full brother is a very active fellow too. His owner and I swapped notes and our two are remarkably similar in behaviour and looks. They are both older, 17 and 19 years old and it hasn't slowed down either of them.
