Yep ..you can't deny that a dog with a flat face will find it harder to breath than one with a good length of muzzle and that a dog with 'cute' protruding eyes will have problems ... it's not rocket science and yet despite this breeds such as Bulldogs and Pugs remain amongst the most popular of...

Why the expectation of perfect health only from Show dogs ? - are not Sheep dog trial champions, Shutzhund, Obedience and Agility Champions also highly sought after and bred from ? -can they not also pass on any faulty genes ? if we demand evidence of perfect health from Show dogs before...

KC registration is simply a record of ancestry for pedigree dogs - there is some talk about making health testing etc mandatory before allowing registration and I do believe this will come but it's really important that we have as complete a record of the dogs behind the ones used for breeding...

Do all good breeders breed purely trying to achieve a perfect standard?

Ethical breeders do not add to the rescue problem - rescue centres will remain full to bursting unless puppy buyers change the way they buy - all too often they choose breeders that involve no travelling, no waiting, no questions asked and who will sell their pups more cheaply with the reasoning...

Do all good breeders breed purely trying to achieve a perfect standard?

numerically the breed may be large but if only a tiny percentage of them are shown ( it's estimated that only 2% of all dogs are ever shown )and then this number is further reduced by only using the most successful and by eliminating those with health or temperament issues the reality will be...

Do all good breeders breed purely trying to achieve a perfect standard?

Your post highlights the dilemma we face in pedigree dogs - we are all told that breeding only from the best to the best will do but this leads to very narrow gene pools and in some breeds the overuse of particularly excellent examples of the breed can leave breeders with no where to turn when...

Do the Kennel Club police breeders? And are they a marketing tool for the greedy?

Great posts East Kent and Jasmine- I also think that Vets have a role to play - they surely should be at the forefront of raising awareness of the importance of health testing yet time and again we hear of people who breed from bitches that 'are simply 'vet checked' what on earth is that about...

Do the Kennel Club police breeders? And are they a marketing tool for the greedy?

I'm a KC Assured breeder and have had an inspection from Bill Lambert ( the co-ordinator of the ABS ). As a member of the ABS scheme any pups I register must come from health tested parents and this is checked by the KC via their data bank - ( here's the test results for the bitch I'm planning...

So do you think he's nice enough to show?

take a look at this website for show quality whippets www.nevedith.co.uk - your boy looks nice - just a touch flat at the wither perhaps but I think it could be the way he's standing - get some ring training and watch how seasoned exhibitors do it - good luck !

    For Gods Sake... *$£!^&*

there is no need to let her go through with this litter - it is perfectly possible to operate to remove the litter and spay at the same time. I also would agree that it is irresposible to allow your dogs to have pups that are unplanned and whose parents are unhealth tested - Daisy is a...

    URGENT please read

heard about this from one of my other forums - makes me feel sick just to think about it ( I too was at LKA on Friday ) - I'm praying that they recover the dog very soon - and from now on I'm locking ALL doors and closing all windoows no matter how short a time I'm out of the car

Dog Breeders - what do you think?

You must keep the pups warm for the first 4 weeks at least - they will die in temperatures that cold otherwise - and personally I would keep them indoors until they are ready to go ( 7 weeks is the ideal ) - they will need to be with 'mum' untill 4 weeks then she should have access to them...
