Front shoes with road nails every 8 weeks

£45

I'm really happy with my farrier, he's always on time, brilliant with all the horses on the yard, comes out ASAP to replace missing shoes, diagnosed a bruised sole for £20 after vets misdiagnosed an abscess after £150 and is generally a nice guy

1) number of horses - 2
2) location - Essex
3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often - 1 has wide webbed shoes with tungsten plugs behind (large, heavyweight cob) and the other has just recovered from a fractured pedal bone and has normal shoes behind and wide webbed in front with no clips - just waiting to discuss future shoeing with vet. Done approx every 6 weeks, sometimes sooner depending on work being done. Sometimes have half set at a time depending on how many farrier has to do in the yard.
4) what your farrier charges £50 for full set

and the most important
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY?? Yes, will discuss issues, make changes if required, try new things (e.g. tungsten plugs)

1) number of horses - three
2) location - Derby/Notts border
3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often - one naked so just trimmed; one fronts only (he's a lammi, so has spent a year coming right); one full with extensions both sides at rear to help hocks (not done yet, next set will be the first). Every six to eight weeks.
4) what your farrier charges - I think it's £60 for a full set, and £25 for a trim, but I can't remember (I try not to think about it

).
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY?? From a farriery point of view, very pleased indeed. He always watches horses walk up before shoeing and away afterwards, asks questions and listens to answers, explains what he's doing and why. On the minus side, he's always late (though has started texting to let us know!); and he's not so cute lol (If he's reading this, he knows that's 'cos he's complaining he doesn't get enough good looking customers

My horse is shod in front only and trimmed behind, this is done every 6 weeks, side clips on front, he has rolled toes and road nails too.
Pony is shod all round every 6 weeks, has side clips and road nails on all four shoes.

4) what your farrier charges: 60 per set new shoes, £15 a trim and £40 for fronts and a trim.

5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??

I love my farrier! I'm more than happy with his shoeing he's always on time, he's been very good with both nervous and difficult horses, he has helped improve my pony's conformation and feet (she was a rescue case and had awful feet and also had laminitis last year), has a wealth of knowledge, is happy to answer any questions and will come out at very short notice if needed, he's also generally friendly and nice

1 x set of shoes and 3 x trims all round, normally once every 12 weeks, we don't ride alot and the shoes stay on as long as possible.
£55 for the shoes, £10 each for the trims.
I am not overly happy with my farrier, he is lazy and I think he does the quickest job he can rather than the best he can. But we are stuck with him due to lack of choice in this area.

Barefoot trim was £30.00 but now
Fronts only (backs rarely need attention)
£40 shared visit, £45 if to me only
£65/70 full set

He's nice.

Experience in the past though makes me feel like Farriers are god-like and you daren't moan if they're late or miss your appt completely and don't tell you. Last one, when I did say something very politely - missed several appts without notice - got really angry and said find another. Luckily, I did.

I have 2 horses and one pony

South Yorkshire

Horse 1, full set every 6 weeks. I hunt in winter and do pleasure rides, and hunt ambles all summer, we go over varied terrain, and I feel he is uncomfortable without shoes, my activities aren't suitable for boots. He is anglo arab type and has good white feet.

Horse 2, currently barefoot, she's been off with injuries and isn't quite ready to come back to work. She does less than the gelding and I tend to have just front on her, she gets footsore without, I'm not prepared to have her uncomfortable. Last year when she was very fit and did more hunting, she had hinds on too.

Pony we haven't had long. He was shod all round when I bought him, I've had the hinds off to see how he copes and he seems to be fine. I've not yet decided whether to try him without fronts, but I expect him to be quite busy and also to go hunting this year, so probably will keep him shod in front.

Full set is £55, half set £30 and trim is £20.

Actaully I've had reason to be not so happy with my farrier. He is always reliable, but he has back problems. Since I've been using him, the mare has become difficult to shoe, from tie her up and do it, to now I have to hold her and she is nail shy, and farrier is always grumpy.

Last time she shod her, she was lame straight afterwards. I asked him to return, he wasn't happy about it, took shoes off and put it back on, once gone she was lame on the other foot. I had him come back and take them both off, she became sound over the next few weeks (then had a field incident so has been on box rest since)

My gelding has always had one foot slightly more upright than the other, but kept well looked after for 12 years never a lame step. Over time, since this farrier has done him, the problem appears worse, I've has a couple of slight lameness problems, and his feet seem to grow over the shoe on one side. Foot is upright inside and flares outside. Horses work or action hasn't changed, only the farrier. He isn't interested when I speak to him, and shrugs says it's just the horses feet - but I want to know why they have changed over the last year and never in the previous 12. He doesn't believe me. He has not asked to see him move.

I'm changing farrier as I believe he's done harm to both of mine.

Shod on fronts, no shoes on the backs. Done every 7ish weeks in summer, every 9 weeks in winter.

Costs £30 to shoe the fronts, and trim and tidy the backs.

I think he does a fab job, turns up on time (is usually early!!), is good with my pony....never had any problems with him...and he made me a fab keyring out of one of my pony's old shoes!

Very happy - only time we ever had a slight issue, farrier came straight out to rectify it. Only once lost a shoe, and he came back out and refitted for free as he said it was his fault! Easy to contact, pleasant, kind but firm with my horse, and always on time

normal hot shoeing sometimes with stud holes (pony had to have those plastic imprint jobbies for a while during Laminitis, then wore heart bars for a bit)
£70 each approx we have him about every six weeks.
AND
I LOVE my farrier because...
he has been shoeing for me for about 16 years he always turns up and on time. If not (he couldn't come out a couple of times because he'd b*ggered his back which is obvioulsy fair enough!) he lets me know. I can count on one hand the number of shoes we have lost, if they do come off or there is a problem he comes back quickly and sorts it. He handles the horses firmly but fairly. His care and skill allowed the pony to survive a truely horrific bout of laminitis as a complication to peritonitis. Basically he is reliable and bloody job at his job. I live in fear of the day he retires

Good bit is that he comes at 7.30am for me rather than middle of the day

4) Well out farrier was involved in a car accident so have two different ones now. They charge £65 a set and £68 a set. I personally think the more expensive one does a better job so I tend to try and use him.

and the most important
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??

I am pretty happy with current farrier, but he isn't nearly as good as my original farrier who had an accident. I don't think new farriers bad, I just really liked old farrier and he was so quick yet did such a good job. As well as the fact old farrier came the same day every week
smile.gif
new farriers come every week but varying days and sometimes can't do one week.
