2 horses in Co Durham
Seen by farrier every 6 weeks
1 trim @ £15
1 full set @ £55 (farrier making special shoes at no extra cost)
I'm very happy with my farrier, especially now we only have to wait 3 days for him to come out (in the past it was a two week wait). He's very honest and to the point and puts a very good set of shoes on.

1) number of horses

6 horses

2) location

Cumbria

3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often

- 1 is rising 2 so no shoes.

- 1 is a TBx who is shod every 5 - 6 weeks (religiously) but has them re-clenched after 3 weeks when he comes to do my other horses. She also has frequent other visits for replacing shoes! She has a refit on her front shoes every other time but not her backs as she drags her toes squaring them if she has them refitted.

- 1 TB, 1 hairy monster and 1 pony shod every 6 weeks although new sets of shoes every 12 weeks.

- 1 Welsh B shod every 8 - 10 weeks

4) what your farrier charges

Think these are about right although don't get an itemised bill and get more than horse done at a time do just trust him the total is right.

£50 - full set of refits
£55 - Half refits
£65 - Full Set
£1 - Per stud hole (although rounds down to avoid having change!)
£25 - To come out and put a new shoe on (Minus £5 if he's here for another horse)
£15 - To refit a shoe (Minus £5 if he's here for another horse)

5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??

Very very very happy

- I book 6 appointments in advance

- He comes to shoe 2 at a time so I have him coming to re-clench and refit a shoe if necessary.

- He works around my events rather than his appointments (as best he can)

- He is happy to shoe if I am not there (provided they are in form the field with a post it note on their door saying please shoe me - X number of stud holes please)

- If I am not there or he is a day or 2 (occasionally 3) early he accepts payment the next time he comes.

- He is cheerful

- Does his best to come out and refit shoes before competitions when my mare throws them off (he has been at 7am and 9pm)

- He gives me shoes that can't be refitted to keep in case I go to an event with a shoe missing and I haven't managed to find it and he couldn't possibly get there before hand

- He treats my horses well and doesn't excessively beta them etc.

- He is very helpful and has watched me ride horses to see how they move for instance - to see my mare dragged her back feet and now shoes them accordingly.

Sorry this is so long

My farrier is great (had 3 previously who were totally unreliable) - makes next appt on day, always on time (phones if running late but has only happened once due to van geeting stuck in the mud!!), is patient, happy to liase with vet, Lamintis Clinic etc, his dad is also a Master farrier who still does the odd day for him to 'keep his hand in' and is there for back up if there is any thing unusual/difficult etc

1 doesn't have shoes as he is now retired so he just has his feet trimmed around every 8-10 weeks, the other two both have full sets, one is shod every 6 weeks and the other every 5.
£60 for a full set and trim, not sure how much we pay for just a trim but it isn't much
I am happy with my current farrier, he always does a good job, he has been shoeing our horses for years and we have never had any problems.

5) yes, very knowledgable farrier who has converted from regular to mostly barefoot farriery as he believes it is better for the horse. Gives thoughtful, practical advice on issues such as XC/hacking etc barefoot and some of the problems to look out for. He's also lovely to my pony and showers him with compliments

1) 2 horses - one in full work, other is a light hack.
2) Beds/Bucks border
3) Horsey1 has full set. Horsey2 has front shoes and trim behind. Both done every 6 weeks.
4) £58 for full set. £40 for fronts&trim

5) Unhappy. Why? - 12 weeks ago he shod horsey1 (i.e. my competition horse) with wrong shoes (he put toe-clips on when horsey normally has side clips) and then 6 weeks ago he put a nail through the sensitive bit of horsey1 (note: Competition horse AGAIN) hoof and made him lame!
He also doesn't do 'made-to-measure' shoes. He doesn't answer texts/voicemails or phone calls ever. He always seems to be a rush. Grrrrr

- Anyway both horses are both being shod this coming wednesday. If he messes up again, I'll be changing farriers.
Gonna be difficult to change farriers - as yard wont allow anyone else onto yard. Am considering boxing my horses over to previous farrier - he used to do a fantastic job .....

2 shod all round- road studs in both, 1 trimmed. Every 7 weeks.
£60 per set, £15 for the trim.
Very happy. He never moans about the hairy legs or when they are wet or muddy. Nor did he complain when I got a untouched 3yr old with very bad feet. He is always on time and travels between the 2 yards that the horses are kept at, with no extra charge.

shod every 7 weeks though sometimes 6 weeks in summer. For the last 2 years she has been shod with pads/silicon filling due to thin soles. However her frogs have now started to disintegrate so my farrier is going to try another technique next time she's shod. At the moment she has no pads and is coping ok but we have to be careful of stoney paths.
A set including the pads is about £80 I think
I've been with the same farriers for quite a few years and am generally happy. If there is a problem the Boss will come out and fix it (he is an expert in remedial farriery) but most of the time its the young farriers who come out for regular shoeings and my only gripe is that they keep leaving and setting up for themselves so we have to start again with another newly qualified lad.
PS this is a really interesting thread!

Yes, very, he worked wonders for the new loan horse and was fantastic with my old girl as she needed specialist shoeing towards the end - he consulted with my vet, and didnt charge a penny extra! plus he keeps me up to date with all the local horsey gossip! although he is a grumpy git sometimes, but you cant have it all

3) My TB used to have Equicasts and sole guard ever 6-8 weeks. He is now reshaped every 6-8 weeks. My pony is trimmed every 6-8 weeks. Both are barefoot.
4) £60 full set
£50 2x equicasts and sole guard
£25 per trim (pony) nothing at all for my TB.
5) Happy, generally very punctual, can always get hold of him, happy to come out for an emergency, happy to fill me in if he is at another local yard even if I contact him that same morning, good prices, when he was experimenting with my TB's feet he didn't always charge. He is a very nice man.
He does a fantastic job every single time, cannot fault his work.

Ontario, so perhaps this doesn't apply, although a Farrier does the same job everywhere regardless of geographical location. Farriers are not regulated here, anyone can read a book and set themselves up as a Trimmer, some even go the whole hog and take a two day barefoot course. Whooppee

Happy. He likes horses, and my horses like him. He makes appointments and keeps them, even with 3' of snow on the ground, didn't get here once but he called me from the ditch he was sitting in to let me know he'd not be coming, love him! He actually knows what he is talking about too.

I could not be happier, he is the best farrier I have ever encountered, he has shod my horses brilliantly for the past ten years (christ, has it been that long

) he always turns up when he says he will, shoes to the highest standard, is VERY reasonable in price, goes the extra mile in terms of coming out very quickly when I ask (although I try not to!) and best of all he has a succession of very cute eye candy apprentices

4) £55 a set, £12 trims - no extra for stud holes

5) Very happy. Comes every 2 weeks, so never a prob if we have lost a shoe. Friendly, happy, turns up when he says he will, texts/phones if he has to change the day. Will ask a more local guy to put a shoe back on in an emergency (he lives 50 miles away). I'm very lucky he kept us on when he moved away.
Feed him regular amounts of tea, jaffas, ginger biscuits.........

He's a good worker - never had any complaints about his workmanship or handling of my horse. He's friendly and knowledgeable. He's reasonably priced. And also quite fit.

I have one horse in Derbyshire and he is shod all round. He has new shoes every 4-6 weeks depending on the time of year as I do all hacking on roads so he will be shod more often in the spring and summer when I am clocking up the miles and less in winter when I can only safely ride out at the weekends when it is light. My farrier charges £60 a set with road nails included and really chunky heavey weigth shoes to last the road work.
I am very lucky that my farrier continues to do my one horse when he is very busy and a specialist remedial farrier for a main vets in the area...I think it is only worth his while because he can fill up on horse and dog food from the local merchant down the road! He is a great guy...poor communicator so you have to hang on till he turns up but generally he is never more than 1 hour late and 70% of the time within 15 mins. He is good at his job and I trust him and that is all that matters. He has a coffee upon arrival and something at Christmas if he will accept it!

3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often
every six weeks (no more), shod on all four feet, my farrier makes his own shoes and he makes my mare's front ones "inside out" to let her breakover wherever she wants (I'm hoping that will make sense if you're a farrier!)

4) what your farrier charges
£60 cash for the set, £40 for just the fronts and trim behind, £20 for just a trim all round

5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??
happy - he is one of the best farriers in the area, but unlike some of the others his work is consistent (VERY important for my mare - she tore her tendon 2 1/2 years ago and has to be carefully managed to keep her sound) and he turns up when he says he will (also very important as if her toes get too long she goes lame with the extra strain on her already weakened DDFT!) Overall he keeps my horse sound, which is no easy task, and so I keep paying him my hard-earned cash every six weeks!
