3 horses

Hampshire

2 have trims, 1 has a half set, but did until recently have a full set.

Charges: £52 full set, £54 with road studs, £26 half set and trim backs all less if shoes are re-fitted. £10 Trim. My last bill for all 3 horses, including one of my mares having a huge strop was £45.

Fab guy! Very friendly, calm and patient with the horses, always turns up early.

1) number of horses - 3
2) location - Perthshire, Scotland
3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often - 2 just have trims, one is shod and padded for major competitions
4) what your farrier charges - £60 for full set of shoes; £100 for shoes and pads

and the most important
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY?? - I am happy because he is reliable and my horse has always been sound. We have competed (and won) 160k endurance competitions and never been lamed out, so that speaks volumes for me.

Trim every 6 weeks
tenner

Yes I'm happy with the way he handles Bella. Takes his time with her as with being a baby she's a bit nervous. She had a trim yesterday for the 2nd time and she's not footy or anything. Was easy to get hold of and book. Rang Tuesday for Thursday visit

What more could I ask?

Newmarket (Read v. expensive place to keep a horse)
1 Full set, every 6 weeks unless we have a comp coming up and then may be more frequently (I had T done today and he is being done in 4 weeks due to a show a 5 weeks). T has his shoes off for a bit in December when he has his annual holiday.
£65 for a set, £20 a trim
I love my farrier, he does a fab job and is very reliable. He takes the time to discuss what I am doing with T and his foot shape. Unlike some farriers around the area, he does not shoe him like a TB and does not slap back shoes on the front like others do!

1) number of horses...... one.

2) location..... Farnham, surrey

3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often.... Full set every 7 weeks.

4) what your farrier charges...... £70.50

and the most important
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??.......

I love my farrier.... he is always on time ... ALWAYS!!! He is kind to merlin, and doesnt mind starting if for any reason I am late (merlin would be in and ready of course). He is also very easy to discuss things with, never narky if you question anything, and does not come across as a know-it-all.

I would be devastated if for any reason he could no longer come to do merlins shoeing

I would like to know the following please

1) number of horses- 2
2) location- lancashire
3) what your horses have done feetwise and how often- every 5 weeks TB full set. 4 year old feet trimmed when needed
4) what your farrier charges- £80 for the TB (has specially made shoes on the front) and £15 for the trim. puts lost shoes on for free even if don't have shoe

and the most important
5) are you happy or unhappy with your current farrier and WHY??

i love my farrier. he's not necessarily the most reliable in terms of coming on the day/time he says but he always lets me know and he does my horses when i'm not there so it doesn't really matter to me anyway. he'll come out to put lost shoes on- especially if i have a competition, he'll come on a saturday or whatever. all for a cup of coffee and a biscuit!

I have three horses - it'll be four on Friday
grin.gif

I'm in West Sussex

Current three are just trimmed at present, new one is shod. The two horses will be shod when they start working harder or need it. Pony wont be shod until she's backed and then only if she needs it. Done every six weeks

Costs £18 per trim, not sure on shoes, not had them done yet

I'm alright with my farrier, he doesnt do anything wrong, but I'm not raving about him - god that sounds harsh

3) 1 Wish shoes all round, road nails and stud holes behind, shod every 5 weeks in winter and 6 in summer. Other is an unshod OAP, trimmed every other time the horse is shod.
4) £60 for a new set £55 for refits, £10 for the pony trim.
5) Yes, he turns up when he says he is (actually he phones me when he leaves the previous call so I can have them all caught, clean and ready for him) and does a good job. He handles the horse well, and Fitz respects him, this is a good sign as Fitz will play up anyone he doesn't respect. He is happy to improve my knowledge of the how and why my horse needs certain types of shoes etc., and answer my silly questions, even let me practice taking shoes off! Also he can hold a good conversation which is a real bonus when you have to spend a whole hr with him!

very very happy..... he kept my cripple sound and does a fab job on current mare. Seems to have boundless patience. The only thing I have against him is his timekeeping... it is "interesting", however I went to someone else because of this and then had to go grovelling back as the "replacement" crippled the cripple......

3 horses (although farrier comes out to do 5 in total, 3 are mine)

1- balance/trim....NB on fronts, normal shoes on back
2 - balance/trim...full set shoes
3- balance/trim...shoes on front only

He charges £62 full set (NB no extra) and I think its £42 for the fronts only....

Sometimes he uses same shoes again, and charges a tenner less.

He is brill...turns up on time, very friendly, great with the horses and my horses feet have never looked better.

I'm in West Yorkshire, but my farrier comes from North Yorks specially for us

Every 6 weeks.
Road studs in the back, on both horses.

Happy - feet are good and he's honest. Dislike - books are very full so difficult to get him sometimes (I'm booked to xmas!). But he does try. He is also expensive in comparison to others (it's the vat that does it!).

How much does it cost to make the shoes. And how much of the money goes towards wages?

Nick.

[/ QUOTE ]

It is not cost effective to make shoes. Shoes can cost from a couple of pounds a pair upwards depending on the shoe

The money it costs us to do the job goes to shoes, tools, nails, insurance, vehicles:purchace, maintenace, tax,FUEL, Income Tax, accountants fees, registration fees and maybe a few things i have forgotten

the actual wage i believe the average a farrier takes home after tax is £15k. its not as much as you thought is it!! and i can back that up i would just have to find the article

My farrier certainly does well out of his 15k net, then!

He manages to employ his wife as his secretary of sorts, runs a van and a Merc for personal use (although it is about 8 years old), takes at least two exotic holidays each year (last one was in Feb for 3 weeks!) and has a huge house! He's in his late 40s/early 50s at a guess.

3. What I have done and how often - horse has been barefoot for last 18 months so trimmed and balanced (Natural Balance techniques) every 8-10 weeks or as required. Prior to that shod with NB every 6 weeks
4. Charges - £20 plus travel. Shoeing is £75 plus VAT and travel and worth every penny.
5. Am I happy? Oh yes very. He has been doing my horse for the last 5 years and in that time the feet and way of going have improved beyond all recognition and I have learned more about balanced feet and their importance in the horses overall welfare than in the preceeding 40 years!
