Reggie is spending the night in Endell horse hospital. He was gelded this morning but it didn't go so welll. We have had issues with a prolapse, skin etc coming out of the wound and none stop bleeding. Two vets came back this afternoon and packed the wound and bandaged him up. By the time we got to the vets practise it had bled through. He was an angel all day with all the proding and pocking. Fingers crossed he has a quite night and the clotting meds work their magic.

On a positive note the stifle is fine now.

Oh glory be Pinkvboots, what on earth is going on with GPs not even following baby protocols.
dl, how awful re vet, good to hear you complained.
(goes off muttering about it never used to seem so obviously awful/incompetence rules the roost. Social media eh)

It's a joke isn't it I've just also found out another friend's daughter who was repeatedly taken to the doctors and basically offered no further tests or anything has now been diagnosed with advanced cancer, they paid for a private consultation in the end.

It's disgusting.

Sorry to hear about your friends little one. good that your friend went with her instinct.

I was going to chalk the vet visit up to experience and just not have her again, but same vet was sent to sedate for clipping and 45 mins later and a lot of upset pony still wasn't sedated and it was getting so dangerous that I called it and pony won't be clipped again this year. Pony was needle phobic, but now is pretty much terified of vets too. Luckily vet was only a locumb and has finished her time with our practise. I'm glad we had a bit of horse knowledge betwen us, it could of turned out very differently otherwise.
I've never really questioned a vet apart from the discussion about treatment, but it really makes you realise you shouldn't follow blindly even when far more qualified than you.

Sorry to hear that it's so hard when they have a bad experience they just never seem to forget it.

It's so easy to just think oh well they know best but often they don't.

One of mine became needle phobic after a lameness work up he is much better now, so hopefully in time yours will get better as well.

He's coming home tomorrow morning. Bleeding has slowed to a normal rate. He's stolen the hearts of the nurses. He's had 2 lots of clotting medication. Decision was made to leave him another night so we dont get his blood pressure up with travelling and coming home to his friends.

I'll update with photos when he's home

Tell me about it. I really thought we were loosing him yesterday.

I bought one once who was unhandled except for gelding and they couldn't catch him again when he hemorrhaged. The breeder told me the whole paddock was pink next morning and he was very weak. He had no ill effects at 4, so hopefully Reggie will be fine in a week or two. (Your pocket will be a bit sore! )

Honestly there was so much blood. Ive had a few gelded over the years but never anything like this. The vet hospital takes £1000 deposit before unloading your horse now as they have been stung a few times. I've Already written off our chances of a holiday again this year and the savings pot is running on empty. But he's coming home today to a small paddock with shelter so he can move but not to much.

Well he'd have died otherwise by the sound of it, so money well spent, though it hurts a bit. He's lucky to have you on his side.
