I thought I give you a little update on not so little Reggie.

He is about 14.2 and 2.5years old now.

He's mostly polite being handled, groomed etc. He gets incredibly excited walking out. Legs go everywhere! luckily he gets tired pretty quickly when we're out so we then get some sensible behaviour. Traffic doesn't faze him. He's ok for the farrier, but a little impatient. He's worn harness a few times and couldn't care less. He's played around with having a saddle on and off and again doesn't care, OH even balanced it on his head and Reggie wasn't fussed. He loads ok, but isn't to happy about coming back out. He wears a bridle when he comes in to be groom but is not getting the hang of having a bit in his mouth at all. Any ideas? I'm going to leave it a few weeks now as he has 3 new teeth coming through at the front currently so a bit uncomfortable in his mouth anyway.

He's had the weirdest smelling breath since he was gelded and I've been paranoid it was something not right with his procedure. But we have finally worked out what it is. I'm guessing while he was healing he must have been itchy and it's just become a habit. he sits in the field like a cat and 'cleans' or 'itches' his private area's. The smell is 'smxxma' 🤢 - he doesn't get kisses on the nose anymore!

I've never seen a horse do this before - anyone?

Could it be that it was itchy at first but he then found he.... erm, enjoyed it?

Extra strong mints would be your friend I would have thought, just for general freshness, definitely not nose kissing.

Glad he's growing up nicely though!

The pity purchase did grown up pony stuff today. On and off a few times then a couple of walks round our 'yard' area. Excuse the photo quality they are screenshot from videos.

At one point he stuck his head down to eat 🤣 I nearly had a thelwell moment!

The pity purchase tried causing another vet bill today. I don't leave fly masks on when it's raining as they tend to rub behind the ears, but reggie couldn't tolerate a few flies on his face this afternoon when the wind finally dropped. He rubbed his eye on something sharp somewhere and cut himself just below his eye. It looks horrific when I first saw it (covered in flies) but once cleaned up it is only skin deep. So covered in antiseptic cream and a fly mask and turn out in long grass to keep him occupied over night. Hopefully eating takes his mind of it.

Ouch that looks a nippy one! Should heal up easy enough though. Silly Reggie. I bought Orbi the bug eye stretchy fly mask from LeMieux, best purchase ever.
He has a mask on all the time if it's not raining. Either a lycra one or a shires one depending on what's in the wash.

I just don't leave it on in the rain as when it's wet it rubs as he's a delicate thing. But the weather just caught us out today.

Poor soul, good flesh there so should heal well. I got caught out today too, wringing in 2.5 minutes

My 2 kept getting really bad bites the flies were opening up so I have putting metanium nappy cream on them and it's like a barrier and really dries them up.

I do use the zinc oxide spray but not near eyes so the nappy cream may help.

I have to take masks off overnight or they rub the Arab's faces.

Reggie is doing some more grown up stuff. He's learning about trips out in the lorry and having a bit of a refresher of wearing tack etc.

He will be going away to be backed as there are some gaps in his education, which is totally our fault for being to soft with him.

Finding someone to send him to is proving a challenge. How do people make a decision? With Ben it was a person that worked well with him as he had trust issues so he lead the decision making. Reg is different he's pretty straight forward and just wants to be everyone's friend. He doesn't pick things up very quickly which worries me he might be rushed or bullied if I don't choose well.

I have had massive price differences too. Ranging from £100 per week to £280 per week. I know you get what you pay for, but what am I paying for? It's a mine field.

So if anyone can recommend anyone pretty local to me so I can visit often I would be very grateful. He's done the following,

Worn tack - doesn't care.
Stands at the mounting block while I bob around on it next to him - doesn't care.
Been sat on and lead around - doesn't care.
long reined with a leader at his head - wants to see the person with reins all the time and tries to turn round.
Lunging - we have a few forward steps on a shortish line but he just wants to stand with you. few circles with another person leading or walking next to him.
Handling on the ground is generally good, but he is 3 and can get excited and be a bit rude sometimes.

He's up to date with worming and feet (trims) and restarting his jabs as I missed his annual one (if that is relevant). Looking to get him backed over winter ready to start light hacking in spring - he's 4 in June.

Photo of the man himself on his trip to the petrol station with his dad last weekend!

Don't know if this is an alternative for you to sending away, apologies if not.

Do you have a trainer who you trust who could work with you at home a few times a week for a short while? I did this for a couple of mine, it worked well, giving a valuable set of 'eyes on the ground' and/or rider who can get on if that helps, less disruption to pony's routine, easy to tailor the training for yours and Reggie's strengths and gaps, and we found a flexibility in timing if you need a short break.

I am following this post as I am looking for one who would come to work with my 4 year old and friends 3 year old.
