This is my final text conversation to/from my EPA qualified trimmer after I politely told him that I was going to use the farrier from then on. This was 4 years ago.

Hi, I hope that you are all keeping well in these worrying times. Thanks for all you've done for the horses, but I've decided to get the farrier to look after all my 3 from now on - he's happy to have them without shoes, and he works very closely with my vet.
You were next due here on ****
All the best, *TP*

Hi *TP* no problem, if it doesn't work out, you have my number. I was struggling with your vets theories about dumping toes, and was in major disagreement with her, and biting my tongue a bit, so it is probably for the best.
Hope all goes well.

ETA I had already offered to get fresh x rays done on the mare with the long toes/low heels to help him with the trim. He airily replied ‘Don’t bother, no matter what the x rays showed I wouldn’t trim these feet any differently’. I passed that little nugget on to the vet who was 😳.

There was a post yesterday where a horse with long toes had been in hospital (for something else) and the vet/farrier trimmed the toes. Sorry in HM speak "chopped" the toes. So funny. One of them suggested suing the vet. :)
I do agree with the principle that a vet should not change the foot balance of a horse in their care without the agreement of the owner (assuming horse isnt in for an emergency foot related reason).

Me too. Also, I thought it looked like a poor job (not that I'm very knowledgeable) so I can see why the owner was cross.

I just can't get my head round the fact that a long toe (and some of them look really long) won't cause pressure. I get not wanting to round the toe off, and wanting contact with the ground, but not leaving them very long.

So appears something has hit the fan on the Phoneix page. I didn’t see the video but a trimmer has chopped the toes off a laminitic…

It's Nick Hill. A video was posted by Lindsey Field who does hoof disections on a page called "The Study of the Equine Hoof." Nick is a farrier turned trimmer who is very well respected in the trimming world. I've had the good fortune to meet him several times and see his work (including trimming one of my own horses). He put up a second video a day or so later of the horse in question, Skye, walking quite comfortably in boots.
He just put out a statement on his page:
📌
STATEMENT FROM V&T EQUINE SERVICES
📌

We shared Skye’s journey since the day we met her. We have openly and honestly documented the work performed on her and have laid that out to be seen plainly and in detail. The original video and any consecutive videos, comments and posts, more of which will follow as promised, have only one purpose - to demonstrate how her first session went, what was done and why and how this has affected her in the following days.
Discussion has been open and welcome since day one, as has always been the case with both of us - Nick and Ralitsa. We appreciate the majority of commenters, who have remained respectful and mindful of how they come across. We have done our best to explain the little that was not covered in the original video and continue to do so, as to not shed any doubt that we truly welcome diverse opinions.
However this has not been the sole topic of discussion. One professional in particular, has made libellous claims against Nick. We are prepared to take this as far as necessary as lies and spreading misinformation is not tolerated particularly with the background of the open and transparent updates we continue to share about Skye. Like Skye’s owner, we have also helped many others, including some of those who now have decided to use lies to, presumably, aid their agenda. Because this professional has openly stated this libellous claim and has not been reprimanded publicly by the organisation that has trained them, we are only left to assume that the organisation tolerates such behaviour and completely lacks any ethics or professional code of conduct.
The purpose of this statement is to make anyone aware that fact checking is necessary when coming across information of any kind. Please be mindful that what you are reading is true before making your mind up about a claim.

I'm appalled at the hounding Nick Hill is getting on his own group. Phoenix Way cultees, with zero qualifications in hoof care, have the gall to tell an incredibly experienced practitioner that he's butchered a laminitic pony's hooves, even though the pony is looking quite sound a couple of days after the trim on no pain relief! I'd call that a successful trim.

Gawsworth Track Livery, who are big promoters of Hoofing Marvellous, also made a post bashing his video, which is unsurprising.

What is scary to me is that these cult followers are not getting the full picture, they probably haven't even met these people in real life, yet they hero worship them as if they are flawless gods with superior knowledge, and everyone else is terrible and wrong because they say so.

My horses are barefoot and I've used several EPs over the years, all of my horses are sound and have good feet. According to them my horses should be dead by now, because *horror* I let my horses (none of which are metabolic) eat grass

Please can we remember that heartbreaking blog post not so long ago about the above track livery, which would never be posted on their perfectly curated, holier-than-thou page, about the horse who had to put to sleep shortly after being on rehab livery with them, and according to the owner left them with a poor body score and abscesses in (all/most?) of his feet.

This feels like a necessary time to dredge up the not-so-distant past, because lots of ordinary horse owners are being sucked in and whipped up into a frenzy about how apparently every normal trimmer/farrier/vet knows nothing, and is out to kill their horses. There is a lot of misinformation, very little balance, and of course any comments which disagree with anything they say are instantly deleted, and said people labelled as bullies and haters.

I've been watching this horror unfold for a while now, and can't not say anything anymore.

I've been watching this Nick, Skye and HM exchange over the last couple of days. She really is on a different planet.

The cult thing will just get worse as the more professionals criticise her the more she will dig and and the more they will support the head of the cult.

ATM I'm not sure how it will eventually come crashing down. Long way to run I think at present.

Yes it’s worth remembering this horse that had to be PTS was being trimmed at a Gasworth track by a Hoofing Marvellous trimmer.

And the livery who owned the horse is known to me, and would have gone to the ends of the earth to do the right thing for her horse.

I joined the group to see what was going on, but my timeline then was flooded with their posts so I am off it again. Poor horses! And they are so strident about their philosophy it drowns out the more measured comments that they have allowed to stay on the page.

It's very sad, and very frustrating to me because I constantly see people on social media saying 'the trim method must work because look at all of the success stories at GTL'

Of course they aren't going to be showing the horses who got worse on their livery, that wouldn't suit their narrative that all other trimmers and vets are misinformed and 'ruining' people's horses, it wouldn't suit the narrative that they are enlightened and everyone else is stupid.

According to them, grass is bad for all horses, you don't need to feed supplements, just hay, and if you do anything other than leave duck feet on your horse then you're a rubbish owner. No ifs no buts, totally black and white right and wrongs, which is a huge red flag when it comes to horse management - putting ideology before basic common sense.

It would make me more inclined to use Nick Hill .. not that it would help.

I find social media quite bizarre for the way people seem to think they *know* someone based off of a curated profile. Despite never meeting them etc. people seem to find something they agree with and then dive into the rabbit hole head first. It's amazing how stridently people will believe stuff with absolutely no critical appraisal or peer review or real evidence.

I'm a member of lots of different horse groups, and it's scary how I actually recognise the names of their top disciples now, because they're constantly jumping on other people's posts and preaching/shaming people/generally being aggressive nutters. They love to link the PW group to try and recruit more cultees. One person who keeps commenting has zero professional hoof care credentials, they are just a run of the mill horse owner, and they genuinely believe they know better than Nick Hill, who has been in the industry for decades and actually has a wealth of knowledge and experience (as an aside I have not used him myself, but know loads of people who do/have and who are really happy with his work). I have second hand embarrassment reading some of the comments aimed at him by these brainwashed people.

I think other industry professionals should take care as to who they recommend and associate with. I have seen a horse trainer sing the praises of GTL many times, and I would be surprised if they have ever met in real life, as they live in a different country. Maybe they are unaware that she and HM put a lot of time and effort into bad-mouthing every hoof trimmer in the UK who doesn't conform to their ideology, and that they're causing a lot of unnecessary trouble for these people.

I feel very sorry for Nick Hill, who is being harassed on social media by people who apparently have nothing better to do.

No idea what's going on with HM and Nick. I stopped following HM, and unsubscribed to the magazine, a few years ago because I wasn't onboard with where they were headed.

I had Nick out 2010-2011 when I initially went BF. It wasn't a good experience at all but as I was new to BF I went with it longer than I would these days.

After writing out the details I've deleted it because I don't want any drama. What happened happened and thankfully I know a lot more now meaning I can advocate for my horses better [& sooner].

I've no idea what's going on with HM, and have no desire to look, but as always would urge people to apply critical thinking and research everything/everyone rather than take anything at face value from anyone.

I don't agree with HM of years ago, and they seem to have gotten worse, but you wouldn't want me trimming your horse based on that.

I personally have not used him as a trimmer, but the bigger picture issue in this case is that this is a repeat behaviour from HM of sharing another hoof care practitioner's content and riling up/emboldening their cult followers to post aggressive messages on the trimmer's personal pages. It's totally unprofessional behaviour, and he isn't the first EP or farrier they have targeted.

I wholeheartedly agree that people need to apply critical thinking, and above all, question black and white thinking, because most of the time there is no one-size-fits-all.

The trimmer concerned here in the last few posts is actually the person that was trimming said horse in my post in this thread a few above. I have no comments on that part of things as I haven’t ’personally’ used him, although I certainly did have my own thoughts at the time. However, that aside, I think it’s pretty grim how HM etc like to target people the way they do. Again, look at the horse as a whole. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other.

I see there’s a post going around now about how long toes are incorrect and recent social media posts should not be encouraged. We’ll see how long HM and Phoenix take to get their hands on that!

I know I’m a farrier and it may seem as I am biased, but if you choose to go barefoot I’d discuss it with your farrier first they’ll advise you truthfully what direction to take we always listen to the customers needs and wants plus farriers are the best qualified barefoot trimmers out there. Don’t get sucked into these ideologies.

There are some really rubbish farriers out there too. Being rubbish is not exclusive to one group of people.

That’s just not true.

The farriers I really respect are interested in barefoot methods and boot technology and generally admit they don’t know that much about trimming working barefoot horses (unless they’ve chosen to specialise in this area).

I’ve used good farriers and good barefoot trimmers over the years.

But if I ask a potential new farrier how many working, competing barefoot horses he has on his books and he says none or very few, he’s not the farrier for me.

Same question for any potential trimmer, and what qualifications they have. And I’d want to know them through recommendation from people competing and doing decent mileage with barefoot horses as are less regulated.

There are good and bad trimmers and farriers and implying otherwise does both a disservice.

The Hypocrisy in the Equine World Exposed

The equine world is full of hypocrisy, and I can no longer stay silent about it.

For years, I, Lindsay Setchell, and Hoofing Marvellous have been subjected to hate, lies, and even disgusting slogans (C**T) printed on merch to discredit us, shared by those scoffing at our success.

Openly denigrating our followers as merely gullible horse owners without a brain cell between them.

But wait, why are horse owners turning to us and why are we succeeding? Because we offer a more holistic, horse-centered approach to addressing hoof problems.

We dare to call out the malfeasance of so-called hoof care professionals who refuse to believe in the horse’s natural power to heal.

Instead, they obsess over pathology - chopping, nailing, and abusing the hoof as if it were a useless, dead part of the body that needs taming, rather than respecting it as a living structure, part of an enormous feedback loop that is constantly trying to show you exactly how it needs to be cared for, in line with Mother Nature’s design.

But you ignore it.

These hypocrites, who have contributed to the hate against Hoofing Marvellous, have enjoyed the personal harm this has caused me, my family, friends, colleagues, and now the Phoenix Warriors.

They’ve revelled in it. Clapped, laughed, thrown their social media stones, worn the hate speech merch, and enjoyed the fun of being the hypocritical bully.

They flood Facebook with claims that our advice should be ignored because it’s “social media nonsense,” all the while pushing their own outdated and harmful practices.

They say we have nothing to back up our claims, despite the countless case studies we’ve accumulated - evidence they choose to ignore.

Yet, when we ask them for their case studies or long histories showing detailed progress like we do, they have nothing to show at all.

All we hear is the tired refrain, “Where are the peer-reviewed papers?” - even though those papers are flawed, full of errors, based on small sample sizes, often relying on cadaver leg studies and hypotheses that don’t reflect real-life scenarios and written by people who most often than not, have never trimmed a hoof capsule in their lives.

The same people who incite hate and violence against us can’t stand it when they’re held accountable for the harm they continue to perpetuate.

They delete comments, ban dissenters, and hide from criticism - yet we’ve had to endure it all, every hateful comment, every attack, no matter how vile.

Do we bleat about it? Is that what we’re doing now? Nope.

Because here’s the reality facing those hypocrites - horse owners are waking up.

They’re starting to rehab their horses themselves, becoming true Phoenix Warriors.

They’re seeing firsthand how hypocritical the equine world has become. The old, harmful rhetoric is finally coming back to haunt those who’ve pushed it for so long.

Your malfeasance is coming home to roost.

So, if you can’t handle the truth, then get out of our way. Adapt or get left behind.

The tide has turned - either change your ways or face the consequences, but stop being hypocrites.

This isn’t just a minor issue - thousands of horses are put to sleep across the globe every week because of these outdated practices, and all these so-called professionals do is complain when they’re called out.

Well we’re done with your nonsense, we’re done with you bleating that it’s not fair when you get a taste of your own medicine.

It’s harsh out here with your head above the parapet and now horse owners are getting educated, they’re coming for you and won’t put up with your bullshit any longer.

Horse owners are reclaiming their power. These animals that you lame and maim, are theirs, not yours to do what you want with and experiment on when things aren’t working.

Those who choose (or are forced) to open their eyes to why their horse has been suffering after every trim, or has been on and off lame for years, been blamed that it’s been all their fault, and had their beloved horses pts for ‘laminitis’ when it was poor hoof care all along - those owners are waking up and being EMPOWERED.

This Phoenix Way is far more than just a bunch of enthusiasts playing around with hooves, it’s a movement of owners standing up to the smoke screens the equine world has been belching out for decades.

So hold on tight, hypocrites.

The more you prey on these vulnerable owners desperate for answers, charging them 100s and 100s for one visit, ripping them off, laming their horses, putting them to sleep because you can’t ’fix’ them and have run out of ideas, or twisting the narrative and hiding behind your gaslighting spin when horses finally lose their lives or get taken away from you.

You know deep down you’ve lost your way… but you can’t admit it. You are being called out.

So as the old sayings go, those pots who are calling these kettles black, listen up, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen - because the owners are coming for you and these owners are extremely powerful.

The Phoenix Warriors are rising from the ashes.

Whilst I totally agree that there are both good and bad farriers, as there is good and bad in every profession, I have to say from my own experience, my farrier is amazing. Most of my horses have been barefoot for the past 18yrs, these are competition horses, living normal lives, turned out daily, hacked, polework and competing up to Grand Prix dressage, and looked after by my farrier, his trimming is exceptional.

Credit where credit’s due, that’s a terrific post. Really well thought structure, ticks off all the relevant buzzwords, appeals to your emotions while maintaining a “scientific” feel, completed with a sweet mix of gentle but very emotive marketing as the cherry on top.

HM might not be a good trimmer but she’d make a great consultant for cult leaders.

Copied and pasted from the FB page. The comments underneath are, strangely, all in agreement with every word and cheering her on. I wonder why that might be.
This is beyond unprofessional, it’s drinking your own Kool Aid levels of projection, delusion and craziness. Buckle up:

The ego is suffocating and she can't see beyond her own victim complex.

I hate the use of the word 'warrior', it's really giving extremist, anarchist vibes.
