Boggle- USA bound!

I too have seen ataxia and massive dramatics in young horses that haven't had to deal with pain before. One of ours lay down and convinced us all he was actually dying when he had a simple abscess; drunken walking then keeling over. He's still not the greatest stoic but doesn't now require the last rites every time something goes wrong. I'm so hoping Atlas has something easily findable and sortable. Blimey.

I'm so sorry to hear this.

But just to think outstanding tge box a bit and I have no idea what feed/grass/gay Atlas has access to but could it be Lami?
I have known it in some cases make horses look seriously ataxic as all 4 feet were sore and they just didn't know what to do/ how to move.

Fingers crossed michen x

I'm so sorry to hear your news on Atlas. I hope that whatever it is that's causing the ataxia proves to be resolvable.
Sending you and Atlas my best wishes.

Thanks everyone. Could have done without this now five hour drive and kinda stupid as the person would have bought it to me if I’d waited until tomorrow but I wanted him to have it asap. Even though I said I’d be has EPM i would pts. So that’s kinda dumb.

Running on 3 hrs sleep and a banana in the last 24 hours.

Luckily there is a roast chicken and bottle of wine on the horizon for tonight.

I hope you enjoy your roast dinner and wine tonight Michen and can have a little chill out time you deserve it!

Another who would have done the drive to keep my brain occupied if nothing else. It’s very easy to think you’ll do one thing and then in the moment you find you do the complete opposite.

If you’d asked me whether I’d throw everything and the kitchen sink at a horse that I’d barely owned a month and had a terrible prognosis I’d have said absolutely not. Then Pops came along and I slogged for the best part of 10 months to save her. Sometimes you just have to do what feels right in the moment. I think you’ll have clarity once you know what you’re dealing with, but for now I’d take heart from the numerous posts about dramatic youngsters and how they like to scare their owners x

Got the drug.

The people in this country really do overwhelm me sometimes. They had no reason to give me 700 dollars worth of drugs for free, but people hear a s*** story and want to help.

She said her horse got off the trailer in Kentucky completely ataxic with full blown EPM having got on it absolutely fine.

People can be fantastic sometimes can't they. 🥰

Think of you and wishing the best for Atlas. 🫂

Yeah! Grabbing a much needed coffee.

What’s more healthy, accepting that the likely outcome of this is heartbreak, or choosing to believe that it’s going to be ok? 🤷‍♀️🙈

I cannot fathom that my baby horse whose helped me keep my head above water is going to be taken from me.

Feel like hope burned me in the past.

At least I know that whilst it will be horrific if the worst does happen, it can’t possibly hurt as much as 12 weeks ago did.

That's the thing, the worst has already happened to you. Even if it's not good news, it can't hurt you as much this time. You are stronger than you think.

It would just be too weird for the same thing to happen twice M, way too weird. I’m thinking positive for you ❤️

This is what I think too. It's natural to jump to the worst case, but the odds are against it I think.

Exactly. When H went lame on the same leg as my old boy I immediately assumed it was suspensory ligament and he was going to be pts. I couldn’t go through it again and I had only had him a year. Turns out it was just a pulled muscle and he’s been fine ever since after a rehab but the gut wrenching feeling took a while to go away.

Point being, I totally understand what it feels like.

What I’m currently trying to do with my own broken creature is to mentally accept that this may be it whilst not quite completely extinguishing the tiny spark of hope. Having rather variable success with this I will admit but a good over the phone chat with someone I trusted to give me an honest sense check helped immensely when I went full on doom spiral a few weeks ago. Obviously the situation I’m in is much longer and more drawn out and a lot less dramatic so there’s not generally been the same shock element.

Having plans in place for various different outcomes also helped with the “What If”ing so can totally understand the logic of doing the insane drive in order to be doing something/ to put your plan into motion as soon as possible.

It’s good that your mum is there with you & hope the chicken & wine is just what you need. xxx

I thought about that but his feet are cold and he’s unresponsive to testers… vet didn’t seem to think it could be.

He is chubby though. It made giving him the steroids a tough decision because he’s really at risk.

Not saying it is lami in this case, but I have an EMS mare who has had lami several times and even when she’s been crippled with it, shes had cold feet and never once reacted to hoof testers.

I hope Atlas is ok. Fingers crossed whatever it is sorts itself out.

Keeping everything crossed for you and Atlas and really hoping that it is something that is very resolvable. Not wanting to give false hope but like others have said, I had a youngster who had an abscess and was very wobbly and still lame even after it was drained. My vet at the time said that young horses who have not experienced real pain before can be quite extreme in their reaction to it and present rather oddly.

Poor Atlas and poor you. Given that others have said, the chances of them both having the same thing is so rare that it seems highly unlikely. I remember a vet saying to me once ‘ common things are common’ so hopefully, everything crossed that there is a simple, solvable, fixable answer soon.

Just catching up - your update made me feel sick to the stomach so can only imagine how you're feeling. Everything crossed for you both, I can't believe the run of luck you're having :(

Oh bloody hell, I'm just catching up with this. I'm so sorry to read this, and hoping with every ounce of me that this is what others have experienced with young horses feeling pain for the first time and it's something easily fixable.

Life is rotton sometimes. xx
