Bog finally got to leave the barn for the first time in 3.5 months to NOT go to the vets. Went hacking with a friend, 1 hr 30. Steep, hilly, lots of logs and ditches for him to jump (he could have stepped over them but obviously not 🤣). Cantered, trotted.

Felt totally and completely normal and fit and he was SO happy to be back out doing something! Overjoyed (him and me!!).

The views weren’t bad either!

He’s having his neck injected next week. I’m a little in two minds as bar the cracking and being slightly less keen to carrot stretch as far to his flank in one direction, he feels great. But I guess it’ll be good to do it and see if I feel any difference, then at least I’ll know if it’s bothering him? I don’t like to inject without good reason. He will also get flexed etc to check his hocks.

Your riding country is just incredible. Its lashing it down here and I'm very jealous!

It is beautiful! Though I think I'm going to end up moving Boggle into the foothills where it is pretty flat and barren, so it'll be significantly less beautiful :(

There are lovely places to ride on the flat bits. Just different!

Have you found any potential barns down there?

Ah I know, I just love that drive up on the i70. And the mountain hacking is very useful for something like Boggle, those hills!

Some options, need to put some time into it :)

You’re probably the only person ever who’s said they love I-70!

Might be places at the base of the foothills in Boulder, Golden, etc. I was at one, which sadly doesn’t exist anymore. :(

Rather that than the i25! I love going into the mountains to the barn.

Well there’s another few thousand dollars spent 😂 Neck injections done! He’s a little off after flexion on his arthritic hock. Bit disappointing as it was only jabbed in April. We are doing a course of adequan rather than injecting again to see if that helps, it’s a very commonly used drug here, not sure what the UK equivalent is. Not cheap but will be interesting to see if it helps.

Looked awesome on a trot circle on the hard though!

Best bit is his new turnout that shares a fence line with the pasture horses so he can socialize over it. Non of the other paddocks have this. Please keep your fingers crossed he doesn’t ruin it, the fence is old and wooden and I’ve already had to put back a rail he knocked out. He seems really happy hanging out by the other horses but in usual Bog fashion the minute one moves without his permission he flattens his ears, snakes his head and makes his displeasure very clear. PLEASE Bog just behave, I’m trying so hard to give him the right environment but he doesn’t make it easy!!!

I am off to the UK then a dive trip so I’ll be away the next month bar a week in between, he can terrorize someone other than me for a bit 😄

Ooo, just been looking at adequan....am looking into options for sham as he is struggling a little at the moment but want to treat whole horse rather then just hocks.
Looks like it wasn't available in Europe for a few years due to supple issues, but was relaunched a couple of years ago with a new distributor.
I was looking at cartrophen but might suggest to vet and see what he says. So thanks!!

So glad bog is doing well and loving life as usual.

Boggle is just such a pain in the arse sometimes. I was so happy to get him into a paddock that shared a fence line with some horses who live outside and of course he’s causing carnage. He gallops at the fence line when people hack past (at his old yard he used to do this too but everyone was understanding about it with horses that hack regularly) There’s broken fencing (it’s an old wooden fence but I have zero doubt it’s him doing it).

He’s constantly instigating bitey face over the fence and making another of the geldings basically squeal all day.

I know he’s happier being next to horses, they all hang out in a corner together, but he is just such an endless trouble maker. He wants to be around them but the minute one moves in a way he’s not approved he’s ears back, telling the other horse no. Bear used to just ask 🤣

He’s probably got one more broken rail and another week before he’s kicked out of it and back to an individual turnout with a heras fencing where he can’t touch another horse.

He was fine with Bear because Bear was mine and although he was dominant and bossy he never actually left a mark on him. But it’s not fair to expect other people to risk their horses when he comes across as so damn difficult.

Why Bog, just why.

In happier news I got back from the UK last night and he looks fantastic! Packed on even more muscle. I’d say he’s pretty much back to pre pneumonia now. Going to give him a jump this weekend! I leave again in a week for 11 days so he’s being ridden by the barn. Apparently he’s been rather fresh the last 10…

Thats great that his looking better and it's not been long so you must be really pleased about that, field woes yes I know about that Arabi is exactly the same every winter when next doors geldings go in the field next door to mine.

He struts about rears up at the fence and won't Louis anywhere near them boys are just knobs sometimes 😂

It's also weird that his never hurt Louis but he is plain evil to most horses.

Argh isn't it frustrating!! Makes me feel a bit better that I'm not the only one with a toad of a horse.

Let me bend over backwards for you Boggle trying to give you what all horses need/want whilst you throw it back at me.. :D

It's embarrassing isn't it but at least mine are at home now but when he was young we were at a yard in Essex and he was out in a large herd, I constantly had the other liveries coming to find me as they couldn't get there horses out the gate because of him.

Mortified every yard I went to he was the boss of the field and caused trouble.

Hey guys. I almost didn't want to post this as it is just so unbelievable and I think I'm in a state of shock but I got a call this morning at 6.30 to say Bog was in distress. He collapsed, got up after ten mins. I got to the barn and took the partition out of the trailer to travel him loose incase he fell again and by 7.45 he was being admitted to hospital. All symptoms are neurological.

Current theories are West Nile disease, EPM or EHV. He's vaccinated against WN but apparently it's not always a total protector. Bloods will be back tomorrow.

Second theory is the neck, something tweaked or moved and it's impinging on the nerves/spinal cord etc. Feels unlikely given the location but a definite theory. We will radiograph again tomorrow if the bloods come back negative, they've been expedited.

I am completely distraught. I had them run my card for an initial 5k and told them to of course do anything, everything they can for him. Whatever you believe in or don't, please keep your fingers crossed for him. He does not deserve any of this.

I am so sorry to hear this. I was literally just checking the latest on this thread to see if things were still going okay.

I have my fingers crossed for him.
