I really appreciate all your messages, glad I posted even if it makes it seem somehow more real.

If it is one of these diseases and I lose him I will never fricking forgive myself for bringing him here.
Don't you dare blame yourself! Horses are very good at getting ill or otherwise harming themselves. Bog is vaccinated against West Nile disease (which we've had a few cases of not far from me in France) and EHV is found worldwide. The UK is full of dangers to horses too and there's no guarantee staying there would have kept Bog safe. You're an amazing owner and Bog is lucky to have you.

Oh Michen I'm so so sorry to hear this. It was the last thing you or he deserved. Bog has beaten the odds before so if anyone can do it again he can.

And it's absolutely not your fault. He has the most incredible life with you.

I’m questioning whether he had the booster. It was all around the time I was away last year and the barn/vets dealt with the vaccine. I remember he had a reaction and I’m not convinced he had another vaccine after that else I’d have made sure he had banamine and we never had that conversation again until last week where he had other vaccines.

I could have majorly dropped the ball here, there is a chance this is my fault. They are checking re booster.

Would be ironic though if I’ve overlooked a basic second vaccine given I’ve spent everything on him vet wise.

How did a vet allow you to overlook it? Mine won't let me miss a flu never mind a jab for West Nile virus in WN virus territory.
.

He definitely had the first one it’s the booster I’m not sure about, possibly attending vet didn’t note he was an import so hadn’t had it before?

It's not necessarily on the vet. It's on the owner.

I could never vaccinate my horse again in the US and no one would say a thing. Unless I went to a stable or venue that required it.

I could even vaccinate him myself. I could go and buy the vaccine then adminster it. Don't even need a vet. I would and did use a vet though. It's rather loose in the US in some respects.

Edit: just because this needs clarification, I'm merely stating how it is in the US. I'm not saying it's Michen's fault or anything, and there are still some unknowns. I'm just saying how it is there. It is the truth and it is out there. It's not intended to make anyone feel worse!

I just checked. Here’s the notes from when he had it initially. Mentions next vaccinations which they call spring vaccines (they do spring and fall ones). No mention from the exam for the need of a booster.

I feel sick. Obviously it’s my fault but I just said to give him whatever he needs. I should have checked.

I'm fairly sure Michen is giving herself a hard enough time right now.

I'm not trying to beat on Michen or anything. Please do not imply that!

I am purely stating how it is and what the procedures are in the US. It's a fact. It's also one that Michen recognizes, so it's no secret.

There are still so many unknowns at the moment it seems, and trust me, I don't want Michen to blame herself at all!

Honestly, I think between living in the US and Germany I have a certain sense of self responsibility, and directness...or is it pessimism? 🤣 It may come off as offensive, but that's not my intention!

For many things, you do not get "reminders" in the US. It's on you. This is on personal health, pet health, various bills you pay, insurances, etc.

Now, if a vet wants to offer good service, reminders and an accurate logging system would be nice! My small animal vet is fairly good with this and has an app. My horse's vet, well, one of them, not so much!

We (and maybe I learned this the hard way too many times) can only truly rely on ourselves. So many people don't keep up with vaccinations, worming, whatever in the US. There is nothing stopping them (I hate it). There is also nothing stopping them from overuse, in many instances.

I'm not saying any of this to make Michen feel badly, or like it's her fault. I may have poor timing and tact, but it is how it is.

Do they know that it's WN related?

No matter what though, it's horses. Anything can happen, and sometimes even if you vaccinate for whatever, it's not 100% protection. You could be in this same situation regardless, Michen. Don't be too hard on yourself. 💜

I do get reminders etc from this vet though about vaccines, dental, worming. The need for a booster was just not specified. When you tell a vet to give the horse what it needs you kind of expect that to be communicated when it turns out the vaccine is pointless without the booster.

No we won’t know until tomorrow if it’s even that. But I’ll be furious if it is, mainly with myself, but I will (in my opinion- justifiably) feel completely let down by the vet. That said- he’s only human.

Lesson learned the hard way I guess and even if it’s not WN I am now very uncomfortable that he’s in the foothills and exposed knowing he’s unvaccinated.

At least, I can’t find any record of a booster in my email. Plenty of vet visits though 😔
