Boggle- USA bound!

I know nothing about EPM, but had to treat one of mine for Lyme's and have known several at the yard with it (sadly in an area with a lot of ticks and high rate of Lyme's) and the best results were for the horses that hadn't had it before and got the strong blast of antibiotics sharp.

Not really sure what to do next thought with the antibiotics at least. As it’s even less convincing it’s Lymes. But the anti inflammatory effects could be helping whatever it is…. I guess maybe I continue with them anyway.

I don’t want to ask my friend as she’s got a lot going on now and has already been a huge help.

I haven’t asked her. To be honest I don’t think she has enough experience with it to know (her words re the experience when the Lymes positive came up- not mine).
Is the Lyme's test definitive rather than indicative? Which of the 2 potential issues feels most likely or most potentially significant if there are no clear answers at this point? Tricky but hopefully navigable and it's great to hear Atlas is looking so much better!

It’s literally a “maybe”. And my Colorado vet thinks of really unlikely.

The antibiotics do have anti inflammatory effects though and that could be helping if he did have a fall.

Thank you 😊😊 I am so so relieved.

If everything else has come back negative, it could literally be something as simple as him slipping after pratting about in the field and twisting his pelvis.

If it was me, I'd probably wean him off the meds in a week or so and get a good physio out then see how he goes but I'm not as experienced at others so that's just my thoughts without knowing all the ins and outs and vet advice. X

Thanks! Tricky to know what to do but will keep everything the same for now. Good physios don't exist here which utterly sucks, it's chiro or PEMF. And there's no way a chiro is going near him. Definitely not taking him off the EPM drug as it’s very safe, but I will probably retest the epm in a week or two. Even then if negative again I’m not sure I’d want to risk it.

Argh his adorable little face I really just want to go hang out with him all day 💕

Oh wow! Such an improvement I those videos. So happy for Atlas, but OMG the emotional roller coaster... keeping everything crossed he keeps improving.

I don't know how long the course of antibiotics for Lymes disease are but I'd err on the side of finishing the minimum recommended dose if the Doxy isn't upsetting his stomach too much. Just incase they are helping in some way.

A positive neuro (if not entirely relevant) story - colleague had a very bad fall out running doing major damage to her shoulder and arm, to the point DRs considered amputation due to 'dead arm' fron lack of circulation (delay getting to A&E). They managed to save the arm but warned her she was unlikely to ever have full feeling or use again due to extent of damage and long period of no blood circulation. So lost her driving license and major concerns about how to do her job etc.
5 months later she has her license back and has 80-90% of feeling and movement back. Still loads of physio to do and she may never have the really fine motion control in that hand (things like threading a needle) but from "we need to amputate" it's a major recovery.

Basically, don't underestimate the nervous systems ability to recover and adapt 🙂🤞🤞🤞

Yeh! I mean I’ll certainly hope for a full recovery especially given his age but if not I’ll make sure he has the best life just being a horse that I can find for him (under my care directly or indirectly and ownership of course).

I know I don’t owe him anything in theory, but there is no way I could euthanize that young horse just because he’s not rideable. And actually I do owe him- a lot.

Well, it's early days but his improvement must be so encouraging - given time, who knows what might be possible! I wouldn't assume he'll not make a recovery yet. He does have the most gorgeous face, bless him 😍

No I will definitely hope for the best! I guess I’m trying not to be too optimistic because I know how these things go.

He has the best face and personality, the girls at the barn all adore him. I feel very lucky to have found another one with such a massive character.

Excellent horse choosing skills equalled by you letting them be themselves! 😁

Bog knew what he was doing ;) Glad to see the improvement in Atlas!

Good grief the cheek is immense.

He’s backing up normally and leaping around in hand and generally being very naughty 🤣 I won’t post the video as I’m calling him a cheeky little *****and not sure that’s allowed in a video on here haha. Look at that lip!

Very different to Boggle who was no where near as recovered as he is in this length of time. I hope that means good things for Atlas. He really does at this point look more stiff rather than neuro to me but obviously I’m not a vet!

I am so relieved the world feels like it’s the right way up again. I think I may be crying more now then when it happened haha.
