Burghley 2022 XC thread

The tv coverage was good. I'm square eyed from watching it continuously bar wee breaks.

Though there were plenty of horse falls, the course didn't seem to be out to trick horses like Badminton 2022 did. All the horses that fell did seem to walk away fairly ok, albeit shocked, though many are bound to be sore.

Trot up 9 am tomorrow.

I've been at work all morning (then at yard with mare), was following the updates online when I got the chance. Massive shake up of the leaderboard, some big names out.
Are the highlights on BBC tomorrow?

I was there today. The ground on the actual course was lovely. You could tell a lot of care had been taken over it. Plus the water features were very full-wonder if they've had to add water to them, if anyone has seen that super empty Badminton lake pic on FB recently you'll know what I mean! My favourite combo to watch on course today was Bubby Upton and Cola. I saw them through the Maltings and some on a big screen and they looked classy as.

It was warm today. There was a bit of a breeze but it was SO humid. The air felt wet and I was constantly dehydrated no matter how much I drank. Proper energy-sapping weather, so I wasn't surprised to see a few looking a bit tired. The commentators on site were mentioning horse welfare a fair bit, e.g. 'horse has been pulled up, this shows how horse welfare is paramount' and mentioning it after falls etc. This was more than I've ever noticed before. Especially after this year's dramatic Badminton.

Bubby is amazing, saw her ride at Badminton and Hartpury recently and she is definitely one to watch for the future! She's a lovely person too.

My (very) non horsey husband was listening in as we watched the XC and asked if all eventers have to have a weird name ? he's not wrong is he?!

Just got back from a lovely day out at Burghley. Did not have to queue to get in or out ? and we really enjoyed our visit.

I think fewer than half actually made it around, possibly connected to the temperature, and I imagine a few more will fail the vetting in the morning. As mentioned above, it was very humid and deceptively hot. None of us (3) had a wee between getting there at 10 and getting home at 7, despite drinking lots of water, so that shows how dehydrating the weather was.

31 of 52 completed according to the commentators.

9 retired on course, and 11 were eliminated. Only 1 was withdrawn who was PolyStar ridden by Tim Price.

I was sitting right at the fence where Olly fell (and ended up with it on video) and interestingly he got a good shot over the first fence and then half way through the water he seemed to change his mind and pushed on which made him get too close to the corner and Swallow Springs caught it with his knee. I wonder what made him change his mind? If he had stayed on the same striding would he have had a different outcome? Guess I will never know as I'm sure he wouldn't answer my random questions ?

I'm following My Ernie and Helen Wilson, purely because she's local to me, currently 24th. One, probably stupid question, is 11 faults for knocking a frangible pin?

Its ridiculous isn't it?! I thought the point of making XC safer was that these jumps were meant to give way? Seems mad to penalise riders for it

They give penalties for it as it is supposedly stopping a fall which would be elimination. When it first came in if it was deemed to have saved a fall you got penalties if not then you got give a clear, riders didn't like that either so it went to penalties for all.

?? no withdrawals

Would really really like Piggy to win as she always comes across as really lovely and I love a feisty mare so Tilly bean is fab

But also really like Tim & Jonelle so good luck to them too

Just out of interest who was stopped for dangerous? riding. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that at the big events

Not mad at all.
The pins save ? a fall - so 11 penalties is better than E.
The presence of pins also shouldn’t be an excuse/subconscious change to ride these fences with less care.

Now there are some issues with the activation of pins very occasionally, but what we saw yesterday with the likes of Kitty & Tom etc were fantastic examples of what the pins are for and Tom interviewed brilliantly afterwards about it. He knew full well that pin had saved his mare and that she full well deserved the penalties

Rosie Thomas was stopped because her horse had gone very flat after he had a big knock at Cottesmore Leap...he looked exhausted..to be fair he was incredibly hot at sweaty at the start (was the same in his dressage) he was held at the start of XC due to a fall too so perhaps got a bit much for him?

Fair point, makes sense
