can welsh ponies be dun?

My connie came to me at 4 already grey but I have a feeling he was buckskin (and possibly with nd1 after reading this thread? he certainly had what looked like a dorsal stripe for a while) before greying out.

He went through some very lovely colours from dark dapple grey to rose grey and now getting more flea-bitten every year 🩶

Is it expensive to have them tested? would be purely for my own curiosity...

4 years old (let’s ignore my questionable techniques with the baby pony… teenage naivety at its finest for you! 🙈)

Mine is also buckskin and going to grey out flea bitten 🙂

We need to start using the correct terminology for color because there is a massive difference between a real dun and buckskin. The buckskin is just bay that doesn’t have red in there coat which makes them appear yellow same with a palomino . There is a wide range of shades to white looking to golden to completely brown shades breeders use the world dun because it earns them more money I don’t think it’s just a Irish/ uk thing there is a marketing strategy for it. The reason behind it is because buckskin is extremely common color in others countries usa they are massive amounts of them. Most Connemara pony’s are buckskin they just grayed out so you can’t see it. Real dun is different you can get chestnut dun black dun and bay dun they have a very strong strip on there backside Norwegian Fjord Horse are real dun horses they exist in some uk and Irish breeds.

Was he dun though? He looks smoky black.(Black plus creme)

There is a Welsh silver and dun group on Facebook with some interesting ponies.
This dude has popped up with a new owner and my search showed me this thread. I think the winter coat pics show the dilution better, he’s not very stripy for a dun. F905ECDB-33D5-48DA-9712-DA5F4204A30F.jpeg2CF51BB4-FDBF-4E51-86A1-147FCE4AA047.jpeg

The dun magically appears from the crossing of 2 dark chesnuts to produce his red dun maternal grandmother. No photos of anyone.

OK, going back to the original poster, my sister had a 3 yo11.2hh from Abergavenny sales in 1970 that was described as dun. He had a definate black dorsal mark. I can't for the life of me remember the rest of his colouring.
Mum had what was described as a Sect D dun in 1980s. Can't remember any markings but tyring to get him to gallop for vet was exhausting 😁

Can you link the group please?
I can’t find the silver group now, possibly defunct? It was pre Covid times.

But this group is a good all round Welsh colours group, there’s some fascinating chats on there.

It’s called Colour Genetics in Welsh ponies and cobs, and it’s a private group so a direct link may not work. But easy to search for.

Found thank you very much 🥰

Drat, a pity it's a FB group. I don't do FB.

Hi everyone just to add to the thread there are definitely true duns in Welsh breeds there is a Colour Genetics in Welsh ponies and cob FB group where there are lots of photos. Bryncerdin Merlyn is the black dun Sec C stallion people have posted about, his dam is a red dun and her dam was and her dam going back to a Sec A mare. All duns originate in sec A but there are Sec B,C and D however very very few of them. I own 8 duns including a red dun stallion. In 1983 when I was much younger lol I took these photographs of this gorgeous stallion Maescwm Trumpeter red dun, the gene has been around since the beginning of the stud and is ancient, bay dun is the original colour of all horses so it would be nice to preserve it in the Welsh breeds.

Interesting - do you have genetics testing on yours? Is it definitely the same gene causing the effect?
