Gawd. First day of the year and I've already come across an unreasonable nut.

So this advert was posted.

I responded

'I'm not personally interested, but your advert is unclear.

Are you saying that the loaner will be able to access the horses between 10-5?

Or are you saying you want them to be there riding and doing stable duties for seven hours, between the hours of 10-5?'

Then I get a spiteful PM. I'm still none the wiser if someone is expected to be there all day or not 😅

What a psycho. Advert definitely not clear as to what the woman wants. Although what is clear is that the whole thing is a screaming red flag of hell.

I was just thinking what other pastimes you could apply this method of 'getting a job done' to. For example... do you like gardening? Perhaps don't have your own garden but like the great outdoors and fresh air. Well, I have the garden you can enjoy. Plenty of digging (please supply your own tools) and chance to grow flowers and veg. Regular attendance required (hopefully several hours a day) and preferably someone with good horticultural experience. Contribution required for use of land, amount to be discussed. Sorry - no access to garden on summer evenings and summer weekends.
Sounds just as reasonable as a free groom!

Love cooking? Lack a kitchen with decent facilities? Amazing opportunity to cook in a fully equipped luxury kitchen. Enjoy a beautiful view over my garden, while creating delicious meals and baking yummy goodies for my family, which you are free to sample while there. Good knowledge and skills required. Must provide baked goods every morning at 10 and an evening meal at 5. Insurance required.

I must be softening in my old age, as to me it reads she wants someone to visit twice a day on "their" days, 10 ISH and 5 ISH.

Not unreasonable if that's the case 🙈 Lots of horses have set breakfast times and set dinner times.

Maybe. It's very open to interpretation.

The problem is she gets pretty hostile if you ask for clarity 😅

Tbf my dads best mate pretty much did this in addition to his allotment, no garden of his own, albeit payment usually in veg 😅

I would say you’re probably right but the advert is written badly
10am until 5pm to me would be a duration rather than two separate times.
The red flags would be all the “once in a life time opportunity” and “surrounding yourself in tranquillity”.
I find that people who have the need to oversell an opportunity are frequently people are hiding their insanity behind flowery language.

For me the red flag is the tone/wording of it, as well as it not being clear, then being really rude and defensive when someone asks a question to clarify. I've seen plenty of ads for share which say something like 'horse is on DIY livery so would need twice daily visit on sharer's days' which is fine.

Just realising the body protector and 'do you have what it takes?' is giving 'once in a lifetime opportunity for an ambulance ride' type vibes.

I was going to say this - people do "borrow" gardens.
Maybe a keen gardener lives in a 6th floor flat and a buddies up with someone with a garden but no desire to work it (but would like it to not turn into a jungle). Often payment is in produce and it can work well.

I agree re. the garden/allotment stuff - I know some people who've done this because they love having home-grown produce. Tends to be a fairly free n' easy arrangement with the gardeners sorting things out as they go along.

I suppose one difference is that a garden isn't going to suffer too much if you can't get there for days, for whatever reason - and most of the work is in spring/summer.

The 'must have own body protector' thing was puzzling to me, especially if these horses are so well-behaved & lovable - and they can only do 'light hacking' (which does raise some questions in itself).
And I have to admit that all the riders I know who are 'extremely experienced, confident, reliable and dedicated' are either busy with their own horses or in paid work. But to be fair, I don't come into contact with huge numbers of riders these days.

I think 10am is a really irritating time to be expected to attend the yard for anyone who has a job, I would take from her message that she is expecting brekkie at 10am and dinner at 5pm... but then again, who knows.
The body protector thing I don't find so odd, anything can happen with any horse and it's not unusual for people to over-egg their abilities so I'd just feel better if a sharer/loaner was taking all precautions, at the very least until they know the horse better.

I agree - it's just that if a rider was as experienced/competent etc as this person wants, I'd expect them to be pretty knowledgeable on safety and be able to make the appropriate choices.

It just feels a bit strange to me. I could understand it if they were competing, XC schooling etc, but it does say 'light hacking' and apparently these horses are bombproof.
I admit I don't know much about sharing/loaning - is it usual for the owner to specify that the sharer must have their own body protector?

I know a few people who do that, all my age and in rented places so no garden and they look after gardens for elderly people. They get all the fun, old person’s garden is maintained and they have some company and a metric ton of tomatoes and lettuces get passed around.

I don't think I've ever seen it written down, nor encountered it when I have shared. Riding hat is an obvious one but don't think anyone I have shared with has felt the need to stipulate it. A couple have mentioned hi-viz which to me is also obvious for hacking but perhaps more understandable to want to state that one explicitly.

"In the modern era, the Akhal-Teke has proven its mettle as a competitor in the Olympics, particularly in equestrian events."

The above passage is a snippet of an AI description of the Akhal-Teke breed.

'particularly in equestrian events' - what other Olympic events is a horse going to be good at? Volleyball perhaps, pole vaulting? 🤣🤣
