Cheeky/ridiculous posts you see on Facebook.

Will just leave this here…. 😯

Just a thought

Is it ok to buy a horse and just get on and ride without lessons?
Not including the care of (so please no comments on ownership) just the practical.
Not planning on doing it at all. But just interested to know if anyone has and what was the outcome?
Look forward to seeing some answers.
My daughter has been riding a couple of years and it just intrigues me x

I’ve seen the same wanted ad a few times: 5-7 yr old gelding. ISH type. Experience at 100, scope for 2*. Genuine and easy.

Not too ridiculous… but I got curious by the ‘still looking’ and ‘can’t believe I’m STILL looking’ vibes. So I did a search: the same wanted as has been posted every few weeks since Sept 2021!! Possibly even earlier but I got bored. Either it’s the buyer from hell who will never be satisfied, or a complete dreamer who won’t ever a actually buy anything or she has 2.5k to spend …

Or a joy rider who scrolls through the suggested horses and selects ones with good trial facilities…. Well everyone needs a hobby 🙄

I was selling a pony and drew the line after 3 viewings by which time mum, 3 daughters, aunty and cousin had all ridden. In the school, out hacking, SJ and XC. I swear they would have come to ‘try’ her every week forever till I said no.

I know - mad isn't it. I can't stand viewings. And even with dire horses I feel obliged to find a polite reason to say no. Instead of getting cross with them for presenting me with an animal that bears no resembalnce to the description. I'm too much of a people-pleaser to like viewings, whether buying or selling!

... or a dealer ?

Possibly, but that horse is 25k all day long. I would not have thought dealers operating at that end of the market would waste time with FB. Plus it is oddly specific. Not many buyers are genuinely interested in a horse for 2* in the next season or 2. As in already established at 100 - not 'potential to go up the levels' stuff. A dealer or agent would want a range of grassroots - 2* horses.

But one thing for sure is someone genuine, with 25K spare and ambitions to go 2* soon is an obsessed, talented amateur rider who would not wait 3 years and miss full seasons waiting for that perfect horse to appear.

Or a dealer who buys and resells and has found this advert a successful way of getting horses. Not that I'm an old cynic.

If it’s someone from Shropshire I have spoken to them about a horse I was selling.

Maybe - Beat the seller down a bit, put a deposit on it to collect within 10 days, sell for a couple of grand more unseen to a buyer on your list, move it directly to new buyer & use their payment to pay 1st seller. 2 grand made without leaving the house!

Did they buy? Maybe it is a dealer. They do always get dozens of horses suggested.

I l know I am unusual in how quickly I buy horses. But 2.5 years and counting seems excessive!
I don’t think it’s the same person - this was an older lady. Phoned me and was on the phone for over an hour before announcing the horse I was selling was too big for her. Despite the horses size clearly being on the advert and me telling her at the start of the conversation 🙄

Oooh... horse advertised for sale via a yard I was at for a while (non-RS) with an 'inaccuracy' in the ad you wouldn't know about unless you knew who the owner was and could see their FB history of the horse. I will add this to the list of reasons I was right to trust my gut about things not being quite as they seemed at that yard!

I hate it when I see horses I know misadvertised. It’s depressingly common.
I was vaguely aware of the horse having met the owner who I thought hadn't been very positive about it, so had a nosy and the owner FB doesn't quite match up to the ad although schooling might have changed some things but there is definitely one thing which it directly contradicts. Might not be a big deal in the end but certainly would make me wonder what other 'inaccuracies' there might be.

I remember seeing a horse off our old yard advertised and the owner stated never bitten or kicked. That same horse had launched over its stable door (it was 17.2hh so had a giraffe like neck!) grabbed hold of my dads arm, giving him one of the biggest bruises I have ever seen.
The owner was a compulsive liar and hard faced with it. She once had a friends horse on loan and sublet it to a riding school without his permission.

Years ago I saw one for sale that was advertised as "perfect teenagers pony, great to XC/SJ/beautiful paces, ready to go and enjoy". Same pony had repeatedly hospitalised its adult owner and with all her injuries was advised to not get back on it because the next one might mean she couldn't walk again! It made me very cynical when reading adverts in future.

I’d just seen that ad too, Meredith. The vendor is rightly getting a hard time for trying to pass him on.

ETA Have edited screen shot to remove name of bin end dealer who was advertising the horse. She has now pulled the ad and turned off commenting, though the existing comments remain.

Didn't this whole thread got locked down by Admin some time ago due to someone posted a screenshot with the name visible? I did this a bit quickly just in case.
