I've been helping an elderly family friend find a home for her recently retired racehorse due to tendon injury. I said I'll ask around my circle of horsey friends, as we didn't want him going to the 'farmer.' A friend said she'd be interested, so I put them in touch. When I checked in with her a day later, she said owner said offers around £5k so it's a no. I knew owner wanted 'a little something' for him (I was thinking three figures!). Apparently the trainer told her £5k was a fair price. Horse is now out at grass but still looking for a home. He'll be looking for a while at that price sadly....

I was offering an ex racer fresh off the track with a blown tendon a home a few months back. Trainer wanted 2k for him. I swiftly declined...

Am I being thick here? Why would anyone pay £5000 for a retired and lame horse?
 
It's also hard to understand how someone who can afford to have a horse in full training can't then afford to let it go to a nice 'known' home for a token fee.

the hwsd connie was on the bsja page earlier in the week, feet didn't look great (and it had vitiligo) and iirc was sold on the 'wrong' passport given testing is now mandatory. I wouldn't have one as a gift either.

I read that the passport had been doctored.

I had one (gifted, funnily enough) who was fine as long as he was kept carefully shod but he had had a long period of rest with no shoes (he'd had a colic op) before I took hom on and I fed him as recommended for barefoot but I do know that they'd had terrible trouble keeping shoes on him in the past. He's still going as a light hack for friends of mine and he'll be 24 this year so it's not always doom & gloom. He's been a fantastic family pony.
 
Here is one that made me angry. I mean, why even bother getting a vet's advice if you have no intention of listening to them.

I submitted this to the horse vet site a couple of times and no response so thought I'd try here. I'm not asking for medical advice but thoughts on my plans moving forward.

History: My horse was injured as a foal and she is now 3. Ive had the vet out and the ultrasounds showed extensive damage to her ligaments. The vet says her ligaments are damaged and not stretchy as they should be. Vet says she's unrideable.

Ive had had her since April. She was lame for a couple months (at a trot and lope) but now gallops and trots around the field and you can only tell a bit that she's a little off. A non-horse person wouldn't see it at all. Shes sound at a walk.

In spite of what the vet says I have decided to keep her and mostly ride at a walk and a little trotting. It is obvious she is not in any pain by the way she gallops and trots around with the others.

Thoughts on my decision without any nastiness please. I am not a new horse owner but this situation is new to me.

That's ridiculous! I was offered three with injuries for free when I was looking and bought a 100% sound 7 year old horse clean legged horse with a wonderful temperament (and smashing looks though I say it myself) for a LOT less than 5k!

he loves his fusses and grooming.
i would like someone that has knowledge with young horses. children are welcome but with adult supervision at all times.
welcome to come out competing but please let me know as i do compete him myself (in hand)

Good to do in all ways but hard to catch and won't pick his feet up - so the owner wants someone to pay to teach him those things?
And it says full loan but the owner expects to go on showing him - that's not my idea of a full loan

You are expected to pay to look after a naughty yearling while the owner still competes it yeah right 🤣
 
The ones that always amuse me are people wanting On Loan to (meaning free, presumably) move to current yard the PERFECT child's pony/riding club horse, etc. must be sound, traffic proof, quiet to ride, well schooled, perfect in every way.

So they want to take your horse away for free .................

Basically would anyone wish to full loan me their horse (presumably at their loaners yard), but continue to pay for all costs, I’ll do day to day care. A ridden horse (not a companion where I could see there might be an interest), as theirs is currently out of work.

Tbf, she did say this might be a cheeky request!

The thing is, 1 or 2 wishes is one thing. She wants a rideable horse, due to hers being out of work. Fine, maybe someone who injured themselves would be interested.
But both moving the horse, and wanting it on a free full loan. That's at least 3 wishes, and for that, you need a Genie.

Essentially that one would boil down to how good they were. I didn't think it was ridiculously cheeky.

To be fair you MIGHT get one..it’ll definitely be a tb tho
Don’t understand why people with small budgets keep saying no TBs which are the horses that go for cheaper 🤦🏻‍♀️
 
Just saw a college advertising they want horses for loan
Over 14.2
Between 5-15
Jumping 90cm+
With flat work show jumping and xc experience

Am I the only on that thinks that’s a bit much? Like a horse like that would go for great money I defo wouldn’t loan to a college could be ridden by anyone
