Do you think it’s hormone levels in that case? Presumably sheep don’t have the same frustrations that horses do, unable to mate as much as they need to in order to be calm?
My neighbours had a ram who would go for men but not women. So if he needed treatment it was Mrs neighbour who would do it, and I was her assistant. I often wondered if he had an excess of testosterone and just saw off any other males no matter what they were.

Flashbacks...I had those after a frightening incident when I was hit by a car. But that was not as scary as this incident. I too would get your friend to ask about getting some help with this. I don't suppose she wants to relive it every day, poor Tracey.

She's a proper sea-horse princess pony looks wise 🙂

She took a complete punt on her originally. She was up for £20k due to bloodlines, breeder contacted her and offered her Sats at a massively reduced price to get some of her horses out in the endurance side.
She then jumped a wall as a 4 year old and completely severed a tendon in a front leg, Tracey took another complete chance on surgery to remove the tendon entirely and did lots of physio to teach her how to flick her own hoof forwards as there was no longer that automatic reflex there.
She's done her first 40km ride this year at 8 years old 🙂 sound as a pound and has remained sound through all the training etc so next season would be her moving up through the levels, which Tracey was very much looking forward to as it's so much more rewarding.

I think taking a punt on that mare twice over may have saved her life!

I really hope your friend makes a speedy recovery. The picture you have painted of this fab little mare sounds like the beginnings of a tear jerking film or book story line.

I wonder if we could have the first HHO movie??

Again speedy recovery to both your friend and the wonderful pony.

Wow what an amazing mare for coming to the rescue. How truly terrifying and I wonder why the horse did that. If they're travellers, I doubt youll get anywhere. How do you prove it was the stallion who did it (was there any CCTV)? I just dont see how you can prove it in a court of law that it was that particular horse who did it. These days unless its on film or theres several witnesses then what can be done? That really is horrific though, what would have happened if the mare hadnt come. This could happen again, to a child, to anyone. I guess if it were my friend, I would first of all get a group of you together to go and find the owner and tell them what happened. If they dont know, they cant deal with it. Show them the photos of the injuries. Even if they're nasty back, at least they might go away and actually do something to keep the horse away from anyone or PTS. Meantime, if its a footpath, can you put big signs up to warn people to go nowhere near the fence??

I always remember meeting one stallion as a child. I remember walking away thinking my god that thing is dangerous. A friend took me to see it, it was cooped up in a cattle court, dont believe it was ever let out (perhaps only to do its job). It looked utterly miserable and fed up of the world. To be honest, any normal horse would feel the same kept like that. Either way, it was baring its teeth at us the entire time we were there (thankfully we were higher up on a concrete platform with steel bars between us). The stallion that attacked your friend may well have a serious mistrust of humans sadly :(

Have you got someone to look after her horses?

I do know someone in Kent that used to show and produce Arab's she just teaches now, she is not far from you I'm sure she would definitely help out if needed, she really understands them and has had years of experience.

They're ok at the moment, but we've got to figure out the best plan moving forwards in terms of care. She's on a DIY yard, unfortunately I'm not in a position where I can go everyday. There's been quite a few offers of help, potentially to take a horse or two on grass livery for a while etc

But that'll be for Tracey to decide once she's out of hospital.

Can't believe how much we've raised so far 😍
Thankyou all who've donated, Tracey was in tears over it and so so grateful, said she didn't think anyone would care 🥹

TwyfordM, I'm so sorry that your friend has been subjected to such trauma. I've sent a small donation.
Our stables are home to five purebred Arabians, including a stallion. He's beautiful, polite, affectionate in his own way and, in his day won lots in ridden showing classes. I've handled him and one of the grooms rides him regularly with no problems. He's always been managed in a consistent daily routine, turned out every day in well-fenced fields that are away from the rest of the herd and has never, to date, been a problem. However, he's a sharp, solid, well-muscled horse, and managed by people who've been around breeding stallions all their working lives. He's the only horse on the yard that the YO doesn't want me to skip out, so I don't. Her horses, ( apart from mine) her rules.

I hope there is good news about her wrist today when she finally sees the doctor/surgeon. Sending best wishes.

Is there any update on police/council action in regard to the stallion and it's proximity to the bridlepath? I hope the stallion hasn't just been 'disappeared' by the travellers to another location where it's behaviour is not known about.

No news, she's too unwell for the Op at the moment ☹️

So hard on them all, wishing I could do more to help physically but it's just impossible with work etc.

I've got the "barker" of her dogs with me, he's been quiet as a mouse and so well behaved bless him. He's actually quite liking his holiday I think.

Her kids must be struggling though, they hate time away from their mum. Really don't cope well ☹️

Gosh that looks and sounds utterly terrible. So sorry. Sending her all of the healing vibes.

That stallion needs a bullet to the brain, yesterday.

Her mare truly illustrates one of the main reasons why I love mares; they will absolutely march into battle for you if you have a good relationship with them. Sure, geldings or stallions might, but there's just something different about a good mare ❤️

Is it that mares are entire and you are their family? Or am I being anthropomorphic or simplistic?

Owwww! Poor woman!
I had something similar on my leg while I was waiting for the fracture blister to go down. I had temporary metalwork replaced with longer term metalwork after 2 weeks. That OP went well as did the recovery, although it took months and I did have to take several courses of anti-biotics
Sending her best wishes and a good recovery.

Wow that looks incredibly painfully.

Sending best wishes/healing vibes to her and the people close to her. Hope she starts improving soon.

Have they/she been able to sort a plan for the animals yet?

Not really, being covered at the mo. I've got one of her dogs as her sons looking after the rest, but this dog doesn't like men, so he's come to stay with me.
I don't know how she's going to cope with her daughters full time care as she won't be able to lift her for months, they are going to have to get someone in.
Horses are covered at the mo, but how long that'll last for who knows?

My brother had a serious motorcycle accident and his knee was totally smashed. They managed to save the leg but he had a frame on for a year and now has basically a stiff leg no real bend in it at all and also shorter than the other leg. I would imagine her recovery would be a similar length time but at least she should be mobile once ops are done. He was touch and go with infection for a while but came through it.
I have everything crossed for her and saying prayers to whatever deity will listen.

Only just seen this and am horrified. I don't have anything wise to add because I think it has all been said but am wishing her a speedy recovery and you the best of luck in helping to organise whatever care for her animals and family is needed.

I worked at a TB stud years ago and on about my second week in, one of the yearling colts picked me up by the shoulder. I reacted by bashing it on the nose - pure reaction and not something I would ever normally do - and when I turned back to the stable door the stud groom was there and I thought I would get sacked but he simply said something along the lines of "yes, don't ever let them pick you up". It turned out the colt was from a line of dodgy ancestry but he'd been bred because the line were also very fast.

can someone quote and copy/paste the link? I can't donate anything myself right now thanks to an £800 vets bill, but would like to share it on social media please.

I think being entire does play a role. Gelding can alter a horses brain in both good ways and other ways. They just lose...something sometimes.

I don't know if it's necessarily familial, but horses may recognize us as some part of their herd or social circle. Especially if there's a well established working relationship/partnership.
