Going to view a horse!

Nice riding club all rounder on here at 10k, 5 years old bay gelding.
Very smart. Unfortunately he's just that bit too big.

I have a trailer/towing car set up which can comfortably take 16.3hh/17hh but also need to be aware of my max laden weight.

Good luck Birker! You’re doing so well and obviously are very disciplined walking away from a potential horse. I know I’d buy the first one I viewed, so just bought unseen instead. 😜

Thanks to this thread directing me to a different one about weight loss I signed up to MyFitnessPal and have already lost 1.5 kg. The horse I just bought arrived a bit shorter than advertised (I guess that can happen when you buy unseen! 🤪) so I need to lose aborter å stone. I can’t ride her yet but want to be fitter and slimmer when I can.

Sorry no idea where you are but horse sounds suitable and bloke has a good reputation.
I've already enquired about the horse. It is 4.5 hrs away so an overnight stop, which I was only prepared to do due to its breeding as my Bailey was Nimmerdor bred. I got sent a video and based on that have decided not to take it further.

JTW is one of the good guys and I'm not suggesting for one minute he has anything to hide or that the horse wouldn't be okay for others but based on me, and the advice of professionals (I am so lucky to have this) I have taken advice and it's a no sadly. It's a bummer. Ted Edgar used to watch BS jumping classes at the local riding club I used to compete at and once told me that he really like Bailey and when i told him her breeding he said he always chose horses whose grandparents were well bred as greatness skips a generation so he'd never choose to buy the immediate offspring of a great sire always the grandson/daughter. His words. How much truth was in that I don't know but it's worked for him, Marie and Liz with their successful careers.

Thanks though. I've sent you a pm.

Well done on your weight loss.

I did have a slimming world thread on here but a certain poster took offence to it would you believe it? Incredible eh?

Shame as it's always good to bounce ideas off one another, it's why I stop for the SW meetings.

Oh dear. Why take offence to someone trying to get healthier?? If it works for you, great. I know someone who told me she did SW and lost a lot of weight. She’s kept it off and is super fit and very slim. I’ve only got a little bit to lose but for some reason I’ve spent five years trying to shift it. I hope my new horse is the motivation I need to stay on track.

Some horrible typos, sorry. Language was set to Norwegian and suddenly the Norwegian word for “abortions” crept in, meant to say “about a”.

Birker, don’t get the hump. Your weight if you don’t ride is nobody’s business but your own.

If you are going to ride then your weight has to be taken into account when looking at horses. I’ve been the one too heavy to ride in the past, so I shifted the excess weight before I rode again.

As I’ve said before I’m the same height as you so I have to work at it to be ok to ride.

It is easy to work out from your previous posts what weight range you are currently in. I won’t detail it on here, but it is well over what a middleweight horse should be expected to carry.

Keep working at the weight loss before trying horses, get back into the weight range that the MW type you prefer can carry, then go horse shopping with a clear conscience.
This is good advice. I'm heavier than I used to be by three stone. I had to realise it was unfair on my horse to keep riding it. I now have a shire x cob to ride.

Cars can be changed to increase weight - for a heart horse.
Well it's not a heart horse is it??? I've only just seen the advert???? Would never have looked at it because it's outside my requirements. This is 17.2hh, I'm looking ideally 16.3hh - 17hh maybe consider 16.2hh.

Like I said its the trailer height too.

And I can't relace car for a bigger engine without additiinal cost and I can't afford it at the moment. Plus I have a wardrobe of rugs, I'm not going to replace all those!

When I'm back in work I'm selling Mum's car and replacing my late fathers lovely car with something similar. But at the moment living on savings till I start my new job buying another car is out of the question.

I'm going to say this becuase often I don't see the obvious when its right in front of me. Bailey was fine in your trailer lots of horses that height would not be. I know there's a lot of emotional attachment to the trailer as well, but if it makes finding the right horse significantly easier it might be worth selling it. If your changing cars anyway you could get one with an increased tow capacity. Doesnt have to be a huge 4x4. and then you could upgrade to a more suitable trailer later. You don't have to have a trailer when you have a horse. You could save up for a few months and get one later.

Its a damn sight easier to find a trailer than it is a big weight carrying but sporty and sound horse sadly.

Sometimes you have to make hard decisions to make situations work better and this might be one of those times.

And please do not go off at me, I am having an awful time right now and cant handle it, and I really am trying to help you.

Not going to go off on anyone. I just don't have the headspace at the moment to even be contemplating cars let alone the finances, my savings are depleting due to having to pay for Lari and my stable and vets bills, rent and shopping.

I need to have got a couple of pay packets under my belt first and don't start until 3rd Feb. And more importantly I need to sort out what's happening with my partner so horse hunting on back burner yet again.

And the house sale has gone t*ts up, would you believe it'a 8 weeks into our sale and my partners solicitor has contacted him to ask whether we are selling 100% of the shared ownership or 50%!!!!......
I feel like crying 😡😢

I'm sorry you are having a tough time, I know what that is like from the old days on here.

I completely get that you want something similar to what you have had before. If I were you, I would stick with your original plan - lose the weight, wait until a better time with finances (get some lessons on a share horse or riding school horse once light enough to boost your confidence?) and then go look for what you want.

My husband is more or less in your position. His gelding died, but we couldn’t afford a like for like replacement, so bought a youngster with the right temperament and size. He piled on the weight - lack of exercise and lack of motivation. He has 4 stone to lose to ride that youngster now, and realistically 2 years to lose it. He’s started losing it and now has just a few pounds left before he can share a friend’s horse at weekends and make sure he builds his riding fitness back up. We’ve done it before - it’s not fun but he got there, and had lots of fun and happiness with the next horse. He’s in the same kind of boat as you because while you want a finer type of horse, he wants a small one!!

Solicitors have to ask the questions, it may not have gone t#ts up, they just need certain points legally clarified for their clients.
We are buying and have asked questions to the seller, but it won't put us off buying the property, just want it clear in case there are issues later.

Agreed, not fitting in your trailer is a ridiculous reason to rule out potentially suitable horses when it's the sort of horse you NEED. A big horse won't fit in my trailer either but despite being a bit fat, I'm still a little person, it would actually be quite ridiculous for me to go out and buy a 17h horse and so I CAN stick with my small trailer. Yes, we've squeezed horses in that were too big for it, but they were well behaved, experienced travellers and it was only done occasionally.

Don't limit your choices for something so trivial and give yourself more time to get yourself prepared, I know just as well as anyone how difficult it is to find the RIGHT horse now I'm older.

But they've spoken with him at length previously, and had the sales particulars stating 50%. Not sure if they need it in blood too.

Sadly we've had to go through Burchell Edwards Estate Agents because they are the only one our housing association use and the solicitors they get us to use are just as poor.

We had over 500 pounds of work carried out to the trailer year before last with a respray, painted in and out, new additional strengthening to chassis, new floor boards, new inside boarding and new tyres. I have no intention of selling.

I have only EVER wanted between 16.2hh - 17hh horse. I have about ten turnout rugs, five stable rugs, two fly rugs, a magnetic rug, two thermatex's and an assortment of boots/bits/bridles/headcollars that will fit up to 17hh or 6ft 9. You think I'm going to start again just so some randomers on a forum tell me I have to buy what they say? Are you mad??

I don't want to go any bigger in size. Apart from the cost of extra feeding/hay/supplements/medication/shoeing that is involved with a bigger horse.

Don't tell me it's ridiculous please! I do not need a 17.2hh or 18hh horse!! It's certainly not trivial to work within your budget/ personal requirements/to fit in with your remit it's blo*dy sensible.

Whilst I get where people are coming from with the “you can get a bigger trailer etc”, and to “not rule a horse out because it won’t fit in the trailer you have”… if Birker doesn’t want a horse over 17hh then she doesn’t want a horse over 17hh!
Some people aren’t comfortable handling a horse that size. Some people aren’t comfortable riding a horse that size - and that’s fine.

What you buy,at the end of the day is of course up to you.Your money your choice .The OP was tactless in her choice of words but,and this is only my opinion, she had a point.Finding the right horse can be incredibly hard especially as you get older. My ideal horse was a 14 to 14 2 heavyweight cob geldings about 10 to 12 years of age.I had a good budget.I ended up with a 4 year old mare who has grown to slightly over 15 hh.She had what I treasured above all else, the right temperament .

I'd consider it a bonus if my new horse fitted all my old horses stuff but I wouldn't be adding that complication to a purchase when it's hard enough to find an appropriate good sound horse in the first place.
Each to their own, having bought seven horses who were all between 16.3hh and 17hh I don't think it will be a problem.

Just because a horse is a couple of inches taller does not mean it needs a whole new wardrobe. I've had animals from 14 1 to 16h, from Arab to Irish draught and guess what? Every single one of them has worn a cob size bridle. On the flip side I had two 14.2s at the same time, one wore 5'9" rugs, the other 6'3" so you might have to change some stuff anyway. But no bother, I won't waste any more of my time on you.
