Apologies I've not read all the comments but I did see colitis mentioned, which was my first thought when I read your post.
My mare had a second bout of colitis 3 weeks ago now. Absolutely no idea what caused either of the flare ups. She was lethargic, tucked up appearance, slightly elevated temp and almighty diarrhea. Took 5 days of steroids and a paste type pain killer to settle everything down but she is absolutely fine now. Most important thing is to keep them hydrated, eg. Soak hay and feed if possible as she will be losing so much water through the diarrhea/cow pat poops.
Just in case that's what it turns out to be, wanted to give you a positive outcome from a similar situation!
