Honest to god I gave up going to a certain cafe populated by road bikers.
This was because I was seated and as I turned round to get up I ended up far to close to someone's bollocks.
Mountain bikers wear baggy shorts over the lycra and in all honesty it seems to be catching on with roadies too.

Anyway, it's equality, been in a while, if women can go round wearing sprayed on leggings/jods with camel toes and butts on show, us blokes can go round looking like we are smuggling Budgies without criticism thank you very much.

My husband finds jodhpurs at good prices at Decathlon. His most recent pair have a phone pocket on the leg and he wears those a lot!

On the subject of men riding at all...I have only known one amateur male rider in the last 20 years of being on yards - my husband. He is such a curiosity locally that riders pause their hacks to gawk at the man out riding with his family.

I have met many pro riders, just not amateur ones.

Funny thread! But seriously I’d say men struggle a bit with what to wear. Most riding gear isn’t anything like what men would wear day to day or casually, whereas women would wear similar things in other settings. My son is 12 and won’t even get out of the car at a petrol station on the way home while in his jodhpurs! He thinks he looks dreadful in them. I suppose it’s not exactly a cool look?!

I'm a male that learnt to rider later in life, but I can remember that getting-out-at-a-petrol-station feeling. It felt weird at first but I guess because you don't see other men out and about in riding gear often? However the self-concious thing is something you just get over. If anything I do feel cool in my riding gear because I'm happy to be a rider. I wear long boots though and I think that makes a difference. My OH said she thinks men in skinny jeans would look much cooler in long boots too so maybe that's a thing. Perhaps buy your son long boots (or chaps) if he doesn't have them already?

I wait until they are on the horse before I start judging anything. Surely anyone who has been immersed in the sport are baffled by the OP's notion since there are loads of blokes competing in all disciplines at levels we can only dream of.

I used to be like this and wearing a decent pair of breeches for the first time is a revelation and I'll never go back. ..... well i say never, i had chino's on the other day and couldnt be bothered to pop up home to change and wanted an impromptu hack so i tack up and jumped on .... the chinos .. well lets say they are now in the bin and i rode around, thankfully with pants on, a bit 'fresh' as they ripped at the crotch as soon as i sat down, lol!

I also started riding a bit later in life; maybe after a certain age we don't care so much what others think of our attire as teenaged boys do.

There are a few blokes who ride at the same yard as me, but 90% of the time I'm there, the two male instructors and I are the only male adults there other than perhaps a stable hand and a father or two with kids.

But there are many yards on this side of town: livery, riding school and race horse trainers. It's not at all unusual to see men between 20 and 80 years old in riding gear in the supermarket, offie or paper shop.

An anonymous, first poster reviving the thread, I hear you think? A non-native speaker? That is suspicious. But my intentions are good.

It is difficult to find information on the Web on male equestrian clothing. And it is even more difficult to find decent male equestrian clothing. I am Dutch, our horse stores stock 90% female. I found this topic by chance (through Google) and just had to reply.

When I started riding (at a “later age”, which means I did not start as a kid) it was basically out of enthusiasm - our daughter rides, my wife and I took a trial lesson and we were both hooked. It got out of hand quickly after that, and now we own two horses which take up most of our free time. Not complaining there.

I started riding in cotton breeches, which is pretty much all there is for men, over here. It’s either beige or blue (or competition white, of course). I found them horrible to wear: in warmer weather particularly, they caused massive chafing of and burns on my knees. I tried pretty much all the tricks I found on the web: vaseline, shaving the knee area, blister plasters.. Nothing really worked.

Then I wondered what men riding in endurance wear - if you sit on a horse for hours on end, you got to have something comfortable, right? Turns out that endurance tights are a thing, and they make male versions as well. I ordered a pair (imported from the US, from Rackers) and not only did the chafing disappear, but they just felt real good, overall. The only problem I had was that the material was still a bit too “rough” and somehow I did not like the male version, so I - after doing extensive research - finally ordered a pair of Kerrits Icefills, the female version. I still wear those today: they have an excellent fit, the cooling technology works like a charm (I rode with them during a warm Greek summer on the beach) and they are available in a few colours that are ok for men to wear.

After that, I bought a few more brands. My current favourite all-weather pair is a pretty simple one from Horseware, which fits nicely and is all-black, and I own an Ariat and Equestrian Stockholm tight as well. I like the fact that I get to pick different colours (no pink!) and different “fits” depending on what I intend to do that day on the horse, a short intensive exercise in the arena or a long hack outdoors. Compression works for males, too.

OK, so the bulge thing. Yes, I hide it. I do not want to confront or distract anyone (I am the only male at our stables). I am using either long polo shirts or running shirts, which does work quite well. Once you’re on the horse, nobody notices anyway. And off the horse, I do not think people notice - and if they do, they do not seem to care that much.

So there. I started wearing riding tights because of a lack of decent male riding clothing. And I’m not looking back.

Seriously though folks, why shouldn't the guys feel as comfortable as we like to when riding, and who cares if being comfortable in riding tights just happens to show for sure they are men, and likewise our riding tights show for sure we are women? Or are we going to go down the route of 'oh he is just asking for it , look how he dresses'............we all know what that attitude feels like eh ?

There's no way I'd wear them. (But when I was younger maybe...)

i do want to ask one thing while we are all here

which is better
i would tuck my shirt in when i am wearing breeches/jods because if i don't i can feel people stearing at me that and it looks better

but when i wear tights would you`s prefer me to wear a longer shirt to cover up a bit
or for me to tuck in my shirt like every one else

i think that you do what is comfortable for YOU because women have no more right to stare and make you feel uncomfortable then a man would have any right to stare at a woman in eg a crop top.

I'm an Englishman living in France, and the clothing situation is pretty much the same over here: 90% of clothing and footwear is only available in sizes and shapes to suit females.

A good proportion of helmets, crops, etc, are usually trimmed with various shades of pink and purple with glitter. ?

For the top half, I usually wear long sleeved shirts (Dickie's work shirts are good because they are cut long in the body so stay tucked into the breeches or jodhpurs), polo or rugby shirts.

I've just finished a week of riding, covering about 140km. Some days we would take a whole day to cover 20km, other days we'd cover 30km in half a day, depending on the terrain wearing Shires Saddlehuggers or HKM white competition jodhpurs (the latter as part of a Napoleon Bonaparte costume).

if the clothing is tight in order to be functional, like women's riding tights/breeches, then surely men should be entitled to wear them instead of being encumbered by additional fabric to spare poor laydeez who get overwhelmed by the thought of natural anatomy
