I was once told by somehow trained chasers and pointers that ONLY racehorses got ulcers
.
he had a full vetting when purchased, is it nessessary for another one?
hes had the physio assess him, she said he had an ill fitting saddle before our one, and he was very tense
Not necessarily. My mare only had the diagnostic one. She reacted so well to the meds we decided to save the money, and save her going through yet another procedure. If it was ulcers you'd need at least 2 scopes, one to diagnose and another after first course of treatment...so double the cost. The medication is the killer which brings it to over 2k. You need to insure him ASAP as it sounds like you are going to have a LOT of vets bills with this poor boy![]()
he has 2 passports that he came with, his old history is unkown, no vet records or vaccinations. he wasnt even signed out of the meat cycle thingOn his passport is there a full history of his owners from when he was born ,or is it a recently done passport?
yes i did, all clear, 5 stageDid you say he was vetted before you bought him, or not, I forgot.
ive tried but it says file to largeCan you post a full body picture of this horse OP? What's his name?
Worth keeping in mind that if you are thinking of using insurance (assuming that there is nothing suggesting a pre-existing problem in your vet notes), I’ve heard that some insurers will only pay out on claims with a scope after treatment. Not necessarily. Screenshot your picture and make it a little bit smaller , thats should workive tried but it says file to large
still says file to large, i can try pm you, and you may be able to share itScreenshot your picture and make it a little bit smaller , thats should work
yes, takes ages to the square halt in the 2nd photoAxe, does he usually stand camped out behind and/or with one foot pushed forwards in front?
.
yes, takes ages to the square halt in the 2nd photo
no way is he going back, but i will be really disappointed in them if they have done that. what does camped out mean? the physio said about him not using his hind end like he should, and pulling from the frontYour second photo doesn't show a square halt, I'm afraid. He has agreed to stand square in front but in return he is camped out behind. He is not supporting his hind end with his hocks beneath him.
I understand that you bought him recently with a 5 stage vetting. IF these photos are typical then I'm very sorry but I think you may need to test the bloods that you hopefully had taken at the vetting for NSAID drugs like Bute.
There wouldn't be any point in paying for that (and it costs a fair bit) if you already love him too much to return him, but IF those photos are typical of how he stands than I think given all the other behaviour you are reporting, that he needs a very thorough vet work up.
.
That's distracting him from the pain. I had to do that with my horse just to be able to touch him in certain placeshi everyone, i went to see him again tonight with my nan whose had 70 years experience with horses, yes not a vet, but at least she could see him. she said she had never seen him so bad, he was going nuts at being touched, so i used our little trick that has worked yesterday and today, and bam, hes calm as anything, i can put light/hard pressure all over the body. all he needs is something to play with, hay and licks dont work. he wanted someone to hold a grooming brush and move it around while he chewed on it. he has stable vices, but when he chews and rocks and circles etc, he has his ears back, when playing with toys or in this case a brush, his ears are forward.
surely he would still be uncomfortable, maybe tail swish, ears back. i know him pretty well, and he was happy like he was waiting for his foodThat's distracting him from the pain. I had to do that with my horse just to be able to touch him in certain places
No amount of burying your head in the sand will change the fact that this horse is in some form of pain ,.ulcers being highly likely.surely he would still be uncomfortable, maybe tail swish, ears back. i know him pretty well, and he was happy like he was waiting for his food
a completley different vet an hour away. we later found out that he did see that vet the owner before the one i brought him off. lets just say they didnt get on with the vet, so they definatley werent favouring them.OP, when he was vetted did you use the vendor's vet or a different one?
im sorry, im trying my best. we cant afford a scope for no reason. he has got a vet appointment book for 6 days, she will access him, i will voice my concerns, and ill see what she thinks. i was pretty convinced after all this that he ulcers. but now i dont know. surely, just surely if he had ulcers for 4 months he wouldve thrown me off, or done something more serious than be a but grumpy being touched. should i add, if hes getting the equelibium massage pad, he doesnt mind at all if hes being touchedNo amount of burying your head in the sand will change the fact that this horse is in some form of pain ,.ulcers being highly likely.
Do you know what a stomach ulcer is?
It's a lesion (hole /tear) in the stomach lining. The stomach acid then splashes onto the ulcer and causes severe pain.
Like if you have a cut and you poor lemon juice or alcohol gel on to it - only much worse as the wound is inside you.
Poor horse needs help and you're just trying to find reasons why you don't need to spend the money.
On what planet is that fair on an innocent , helpless animal?
if i had the money, the vet wouldve done the scope 4 months ago. but i dont, okay. not everyone is rich, and can spend money like no tomorrow. if its really nessessary, in the vets opinion, then yes he will get a scope. the vet has seen him twice, and had a online consultation once, never mentions ulcers, hes had the physio, also didnt mention ulcers, hes had vet, physio, farrier, saddler, instructer. everyone has looked at him, different parts of his body, for different reasons. but overall, no one has said ulcers, despite me bringing it up. but i will yet again bring it up, this time to the vet, i will get her to access his body, touch it etc, and i will see what she saysNo amount of burying your head in the sand will change the fact that this horse is in some form of pain ,.ulcers being highly likely.
