If you could name a horse

I desperately want to buy a coloured pony (full up 14.2hh, smart PC type) and call it Half Cut. My sister has been warned that when I am rich and buying her horses and supporting her eventing, she will have to produce this pony for her children to do Pony Trials on :D

Also, Like Africa and No Inhibitions (in honour of my old boy who was No Surrender, aka Cheeky. No names could have suited him better despite Cheeky sounding like it should belong to a 12hh Thelwellian pony, not a 15.2hh TB!).

I love human names on ponies. At camp we had Keith, Mavis, Bob and Jim all in a little block. They were the best ponies going- proper upper-end PC ponies!

A few years back I almost got an argentine TB ex polo pony/horse called Diablo. Right, I know think I have entered the Twighlight Zone... Come to think of it, thats not a bad show name :D

Debsg - I hate to say it, but Caoimhe is actually pronounced "Quee-va" not "Kee-va" as Gaeilge!
I have to say, Irish names are usually poorly pronounced and yet they are very common in the UK. There was a racehorse called "Bothar-na" (Bow-her-na) who was frequently called "Bother naw" by the Channel 4 crowd. Used to drive me mad! As with "Finsceal Beo" and many other Irish racehorses.
 
Ones of mines an arab so he has his registered arab name which is nice anyway (Azamour) but his stable name is Azzy ( obviously)
... or Chips ( Errmmmm...that would be because I sing to him *whispers* 'Azzy baby,chips and gravy':o:o)

The highlands show name is...Dun Deal. Because he's dun. Yep- you can see my way of thinking.D

The only meaning of Azamour that I can find is that it was the name of an ancient city in Africa (spelt as Azemmour or Azamor) and, apparently, the name of a very famous racehorse. My husband has a stallion called Ahagar, the name of a mountain range also in Africa. My own stallion is called First One (hence the user name :p)
 
Well that is interesting... I would think that the two names would be somehow related - does anyone actually speak Arabic? But that's purely an uneducated assumption :D
 
Thinking of re-naming.. If I got an ex racer, do you think they'd be offended if I re-named? I know it'd be my horse, but names seem to be a big part of racing :P

My dog was renamed Annie, from Candy! Untill she went deaf, she still responded to both :P

Who? The horse? ;) If the previous owner's offended, that's their problem imo. If you sell a horse you lose the right to dictate.

As for the horse, I try to keep my animals' names similar to the ones they have so they recognise them, but with my rescued dogs I sometimes don't know what they were called before and they soon learn the new ones. But of course race horses often have stable names which are different from their official names anyway.
 
I had a horse on loan that was called Thomas, his racing name was Bijou Blue.. no similarity.. there was nothing blue about him anyway, he was a giant ginger monster.

Anyway, as Fiona said, your horse, name it what you like :)
 
Hehe! I can just imagine a horse "How DARE thee change my name. I liked it how it was!"

I just heard it wasn't the 'done thing' to change a horses name, but seeing now many people on here tweaked names or re-named completely, I guess that's tosh :P
 
My dog is called Nahla, from the lion king!

It took me ages to find a show name that suits my current horse, he already had a stable name (billy) and took quite a while - although we settled with "Gironimo" as he is huge and skewbald :p
The name Geronimo had already been taken in eventing so I just changed it to Gironimo - same pronounctiation, and meant we had an individual name! :)

Have to say would love to call a horse Tax rebate or obsession, but I think a name has to suit the horse - Like african and nautical themes, nautical is quite a nice name along with mambosa or even seekoei ( means hippo :p)

Having names that are hard to pronounce is not a good idea - unless you are playing a word play - eg. silly mucker :p
I also wouldn't change a show name.
 
Wouldn't mind having a dun and white ( well i always wanted a skewbald really ) but i would name him Dun Over..:D

Just diversifying for a mo , i know a girl that called her son Saxon - i sure hope to god he turns out to be a strapping great lad as he's going to look a bit daft if he's 5'4" and like a streak of p**s.!:rolleyes:
 
My mare is called Chloe, thats stables name and show name. She mostly gets called Chloekins or Madam Min as she is a total diva.

Our gelding is called DJ. His passport name is DJ Capper after the person who bred him but we gave him the show name as Da Dealer as his sire is Lucky Dealer.

I wouldn't really. Their racing name is part of them IMO, and although some are silly it doesn't really matter!

Reg is Something's Up. It's a bit silly and their are so many innuendos and funny comments that can be made by commentators ("Ohh, and something's up with Something's Up! Just had a second look at that trakehner..." being a recent example!). But to change it would be to ignore the fact he did race- and people won't be able to look him up and see he was a proper racehorse!!
 
The only animal I have ever named is a fish I named Francessca.... oh and Neville the imaginary dog...... and a few house plants....

I like old fashioned sounding names for animals, like sidney or vera or neville or cedric. I wanted to call my nephew's rabbit Boris because it looks like boris johnson, I don't think you can decide an animal's name until you meet it though and know what it suits.

Luckily for my horse she had a name before she came to us.
 
I would have to change it, if it was utterly stupid. I saw one with the name "Bogside" (it was bogside something, but I don't remember what!) I could never have a horse with the word Bog in it's name! :P

My friend who was looking at 2 race horses (ended up buying 1) called Perfect Point and Knightfire. As much as I have my head set on Battle Royale, I do love those 2 names! Also Viking Spirit, love that name too.
 
HAH! My Norwegian friend just informed me that 'ned' means 'down' in Norwegian!

Hm, maybe re-thinking Ned's show name to Down Boy instead of Nutty Ned :P Since no one else really bothers with show names, I get to choose :D

You cannot change a passport name (actually with some PIOs you used to be able to you if you paid a few hundred £ but I don't think you can even do that now). If you compete affiliated you need to use the passport name. For unaffiliated you can choose something different and of course you can choose your own stable name.

Not something I would do; don't particularly like my boy's name but it's his name and I don't think it's fair to change it.

I've named a few but none of them have been very spectacular:o there was Pickle, a little dun who we named because his mane was multicoloured, a ride and drive we called Big Bess, poor girl:o Nutmeg, no idea why but i just liked it at the time.
My daughter got to name her pony, the breeder likes to have the foals name begin with the same name as the Dams so it had to begin with A, daughter chose Aero lol:D she says next one we have can we call it Crunchie lol:rolleyes:

Have had some fun naming dogs and other animals, currently have a dog called H, that causes the vets receptionist a headache as it 'upsets her computer' lol,

I don't think I'd ever do affiliated, I'd only be interested in hacking and light endurance. ^^

Perhaps I could have:
Official name 'passport name'
Show name
Stable name
 
A lot of people tell you not to change a name as it's bad luck. Personally I'm not superstitious so I ignored that. I just hated the name Marti.

My friend said, "The bad luck thing's rubbish, I changed my horse's name....

Mind you come to think of it, since then he's had a very serious road accident, and also gone blind in one eye..." :rolleyes:
 
Aaaah i love naming!

I named my three dartmoor hill rescues - Foxy, Tori and Red.

Named my mares foal Summers Freestyle (''Free'') as technically she was free! (We bought my mare and then found out she was in foal!) The 'summer' part came from dams side of names!
 
I RE-named mine, does that count? He was called Jet, and I thought it was so hideous, I re-named him Titch, as he is soo tiny (15.3) :) and was a skinny little sod, he is beefing up nicely now though :D
 
i've named quite a lot... what's really annoying is when you agonise for ages (in some cases literally years, while they're growing up) about the name, finally register it... and then think of the PERFECT name for them... too late! my lovely Orville (he was already called that, because he had googly white-rimmed eyes) i called Smooth Talker (he was by Smooth Stepper), but soon after I realised that The Entertainer would have suited him perfectly. argh.
sticking them with a stable name that doesn't really suit them is really annoying, because once they know it, it's not really fair to change it. my Daisy is now built like a bit of a tank and doesn't look at all Daisy-ish!
i've come up with some really good ones, but am still struggling with names for others. i have to remember that my surname's pretty unpronounceable and really flusters most commentators, so i have to keep the horse names simple.

I love the name Dakota, no idea why but is def on the list of names I'd call my horse especially a grey.

For show names I like love replica.
