So basically he’s reinforcing what @TPO , myself and others have said.

Precluding underlying health issues - eat well and you’ll loose weight.
Come to me when your struggling and menopausal.

Come to me when your on 17 tablets a day with three out of four being significant factors for weight gain.

Come to me when you desperately try and navigate your way through what you can and can't eat as you feel physically shot from putting in two spin sessions and a swim.

Stop being so self righteous and smug please.

And this thread is evidence that even the suggestion of working this kind of information out so that it can be delivered to people in a non-emotive way is met with the vast majority of posters losing their tits and cries of BUT WELFARE! ABUSE! THEY ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING! 15%!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think this is a fair representation of the discussion on this thread at all.

I think all the contributors to it would like to see proper research but nobody wants to pay for it and at least some of it would have to be a longitudinal study to assess lifetime damage which will take 20+ years to complete so it won't solve the problem that the starter of the thread was addressing.

I have not seen anybody rubbishing the idea of proper research, I have only seen people who think that in the absence of research then dealing with a live animal suggests we should be erring on the side of caution with weight carrying, not waiting for research to disprove harm.

I certainly haven't seen anyone "losing their tits".

but you are still blaming the overweight person! do you not see that. and 'precluding' underlying issues? surely you can see its the underlying issues that cause weight gain/obesity, not just someone sitting around stuffing their face. you have completely missed the point.

Birker, who is helping you with your weight loss regime?
Just myself really.
I don't want a personal trainer at this stage as I get injured doing things other than spin or swimming, these activities are great for me as they are none weight bearing. I started boot camp and got injured. I restarted and got injured a second time. I'm not morbidly obese but my muscles struggle, like I press anywhere on my body and it hurts. Physio reckoned myofacial pain I think it was called. Doctor says no but can't say what it is. Won't investigate for fibromyalgia either, actually said it was all in my head.

When I did boot camp (circuits) I struggled to get off the mats from lying down carrying out certain activities. This prompted me eventually to go to the doctors. Blood tests FBC revealed no issues other than low vit D. Why I am so achey, and struggle so much is a mystery, no rheumatoid arthritis or inflammation markers.

I'm waiting for an appointment for support/treatment at a clinic via my doctor for weight loss and also an appointment from the pain management team.

Had some helpful advice from a girl at work who did me an activity/food plan and from people on the forum too.

I'm eating more of the right things now too.

If I did lose my tits that would take my weight right down at least 😅. Unfortunately despite the weight loss they opted to stay 🙄

For absolute clarity the following is completely separate ….

What bugs me is the ‘if you just do xyz it will work’ whereas actually the xyz is different for everyone. My initial exercise and eating plan done for me by a pro resulted in nothing (which is why it hadn’t worked for me either) essentially I need to be on 800cal per day every day to lose weight and that’s not really a ‘just’.
Plenty of people aren’t eating bad shit/ cant just cut their snacks and alcohol out and lose a couple of stone.

I am menopausal and whilst not fat, am over my ideal weight.

I do not have any medical issues that will prevent me from loosing weight. I simply need to stop eating biscuits, crisps and chocolate. I eat generally quite well. But of course this could be improved.

I walk up to eight miles a day, and also take very physical excercise. But in order for me to reach my goal weight my diet needs to be addressed.

I’m not being smug, just practical.

You’ve actually had some brilliant advice regarding what would help you with regards your diet (including from me 😉).

Not quite fair you quoted my post with the second paragraph of your answer Ester. For the avoidance of doubt I have not made any comment on this thread about people losing weight.

B any PT should be adjusting exercises frequently to negate injury and have a large tool bag to work from, because my cardio is taken care off we mostly do a lot to core work (so no impact, I’ve refused to jump for years) and it definitely has been a big contributor to helping my chronic pain. Even though this was rhe exact same person I was doing bootcamp 3x a week having something totally tailored made a big difference pain wise

I hurt wherever I’m touched but it’s not bothering me when I’m moving I ignore it. Side lying is the only time it really becomes and exercise problem

So everyone who is overweight has an underlying health issue?

It doesn’t have to be so hard and complicated - there’s no need to do two spin classes and a swim on the same day especially if it means you’re too tired to eat healthily afterwards. It’s a cliché but ‘eat food, not too much, mostly plants’ is a pretty good place to start.

Yes, some medication can make it harder to lose weight as can the menopause- unfortunately many menopausal women (me included) can’t eat what we used to and not put on weight. However that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to lose weight in those situations, it’s just a bit harder and may take longer. I think you should be a bit kinder to yourself, stop obsessing over your weight, strip your diet and exercise regime back to basics and you’ll have a much better chance of long term, sustainable weight loss so that by the time you find your new riding partner you’ll be good to go.

But the reasons for gaining weight are irrelevant every time. If you are too heavy for your horse you should not be riding. Also there are horses who "look" as if they are weight carriers but in fact don't do well with it - for lots of reasons. Some horses cope better than others. I am not anti riding but I do think there is no excuse at all for riding an uncomfortable horse. If you need to ride for your MH - find a horse to carry you. If you cannot do that you cannot ride. This is not an attack on "fat" people but a statement on facts. If you are too heavy you are too heavy - end of. If you are plus size you are likely going to be too heavy for some horses. It is the plus size riders responsibility to decide fairly and honestly if they should be sitting on a horse. It shouldn't be a massive debate.
ETS the same rules apply for lightweight people on small fine ponies/horses - you may be too heavy - if you are then don't ride.

There aren't always underlying issues though are there? Mental health problems definitely come into play with some obese individuals, but I know many who really do fall into the category of 'you are what you eat' and they can't blame medication, poverty or underlying health issues. I'm related to some of them (we have the good doer gene in my family) and one in particular drives me up the wall because she feeds her kids chips with everything and they're huge. When those kids stayed with her sister for a fortnight and actually had to eat decent food or starve they dropped weight.

Medication is a PITA for some of us and our waistlines but having had to down a can of full sugar ribena and 1/2 bag of sweets in order to drive earlier today that just means I don't get to eat as much later on.

Weight loss isn't easy and many of us are battling hormones, genetics and medication - but leaving all that to one side and going back to the OP's original post. Carry all the KG you want, just don't sit on a horse that isn't physically capable of carrying them.

I think the “overweight” issue is a huge issue in society now! It’s so sad seeing kids who are already obese! But then when you see all the rubbish that a huge majority of people put in their shopping trolley! “You are what you eat”! Losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. And anyone can lose weight reasonably easily if they cut out junk food and increase steps.
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, my weight had crept up last year to 68kg although I could still squeeze myself into my size 10/12 clothes. I’m 5ft 6 and 50. By cutting out junk food, alcohol and making sure I did 20k steps a day, I lost 6.5kg in 8 weeks easily without feeling hungry and as if I was on a diet.
If you really put your mind to it, it can be done!
I’m now down to 57.5 kg, in a size 6/8 and feel so fit and healthy! I now run/ train at the gym 5/6 times a week as well as riding too.
Absolutely no reason for anyone to be overweight and especially not use the age excuse too!
A few people on my Facebook friend’s list are very overweight and one rides a 16.2 tb which makes me cringe. Nobody ever says anything on her posts when apparently horse has misbehaved (probably down to carrying too much weight)! I might have to delete this person as I can’t bear it but know if I was to comment then I would be seen as being unkind! Poor horse🥲
I am surprised to see so many negative responses to your post. I congratulate you. You have done well to recognise the problem and rectify it.

It’s unlikely you will do this on your own. All your symptoms shout mental health/trauma at me. I’d do this with a good MH therapist over a PT. When the doctor says it’s all in your head they could well be telling the truth. That doesn’t mean you are making the symptoms up by the way - they are real, just the body’s way of expressing stress and trauma. It’s all very well researched and documented btw!

My lifestyle change was only possible with a psychologist

I have hEDS - I lucked out and got diagnosed by a rheumatologist in my teens, health care systems don't seem to take it very seriously - but I have a lot of general, achey pain (from the myofascial). I haven't actually many "proper" dislocations (so lucky) that needed putting back in by someone else, I get these weird feelings in my joints that I can only describe as something not being in the right place. My knee was like that for a fortnight before I went to the doctor and I was made to wear a knee brace for two months before they could put it back in. Just to give you an idea of the feeling of it.

Just in case any of that sounds similar to you, the exercises that also works for me (in addition to cycling and swimming, like you mentioned) is Pilates on Fitness Blender website (so I can do it at home and not get carried away with reps etc.), the Activate Your Seat exercises with a bungee, a wobble board (great in front of the TV!), wearing Fitflops (including their shoes at work) - not exactly exercise but they have been blooming miraculous for me pain-wise (get them on sale from Amazon as they're as expensive as a horse's set of shoes :) )

The option is always there not to open a thread with a title that suggests the content will upset you.

The title was in direct reference to "you're fine luv" social media posts reassuring riders who are so heavy that there are serious welfare implications for the horse.

Being depressed or diabetic has no welfare implications for the horse.

Being overweight has none either, unless you are too heavy for the horse you're on.

The thread title has no relevance to any situation you were in yourself.

IMO, welfare of the horse should always win.
.
I saw a picture of someone on a nervous riders/loss of confidence FB page yesterday I think it was and the rider looked very overweight but all the comments were "well done" "you look amazing!" etc. :(

That’s a fitness instructor doing boot camps, spin classes, Les mills etc.
a personal trainer is that. Someone who tailors exercise to you and works with you personally, one on one. A really good one would work with your physio (with your permission) and tailor a plan to suit you and some have training to help people with MS and other physical issues. So don’t write them off if you want help.

I’m pretty fit but I wouldn’t be doing back to back spin classes either. It’s not the design of the class to do that.

Did you get your vitamin D levels up? Low D can very much cause aching muscles and the levels of D to make you feel better are generally higher than the NHS levels of OK. Even at this time of the year I take 1000iU ever other day and during winter I really have to ramp it up to have any energy at all.

Have just caught up with the new comments, I think perhaps the thread has gone off on a tangent.

It doesn't matter the reason for being overweight , medical reason, self inflicted , lack of mobility etc.

The common theme in any of those instances is the rider being overweight.

No matter the reason if they are overweight they shouldn't be riding .

I don't think that's mean , it's just looking out for animal welfare

Edited to say : I appreciate that might be upsetting the thought of not riding if the person is very much struggling to loose weight , but it's one of the instances in which you have to put your feelings to one side and think of the bigger picture.

that is a very good idea. as we age we loose muscle mass and swapping a spin class for some weight training might be a good idea. probably too much cardio is making you tired @Birker2020.

yes, despite my trying to argue that werght is a complex issue, I actuallly wholeheartedly agree a horse should not be carrying a rider that is too heavy for it.

Birker, I'm someone that would genuinely like to help you. I followed your story about Lari and would like to see you have a happy ending. Its very hard to help because I feel you take comments to heart.
I'm no expert *but* I dont think you eat the right things to lose weight. When you post it looks like someone yo yo dieting ie low calorie rubbish and then treats to celebrate. There were lots of helpful comments on your previous thread but you stood by your low calorie 'crab' sticks and fake salad dressing. It's not real food. The Fast800 diet is a great way to completely turn your diet around.

The #bekind is interesting. Are we now saying being kind is just saying what people want to hear? Because I think its often harder to be honest and try to help people. Anyone can say 'you look great' 😘😘😘😘😘😘(🙄)

For what is worth I don't thing Amymay was being smug, we all know the basic principles of losing weight even if there are individual factors that make it easier/harder x

Blimey the crab sticks were one day. Haven't had crab sticks for probably five weeks now. I probably don't eat healthily but I don't believe I ever asked for anyone to critique my choices. When I created the weight loss injections post I wanted peoples feed back on their experiences of it. I didn't ask for all the dietary advice. It wasn't the purpose of the post.

I don't think it was me who said # bekind. Crikey that ship sailed long ago on this forum.

Anyway FWIW going back to reply 484, I should just stay away from this subject, I should've known better than to comment cos to some posters it's like a red rag to a bull.

I thank those with good intentions for their comments which have been taken in the spirit they were given and will ignore the more contemptuous ones because without fuel the fire ceases to burn. I'm stepping away now. Have a good evening folks 😐

I daren't due to disc issues. Good idea though.

Birker, in 2003 I was diagnosed (MRI) with central/centro lateral intravertebral disc prolapse bilaterally at C6/7 and posterior prolapse at C5/6. Subsequent MRIs revealed multilevel disc disease throughout the spine and anterolisthesis of L4 on L5 with secondary stenosis (a vertebrae has slipped and narrowed the canal). My cervical spine has grown new bone in attempt to stabilise and 2 of these osteophytes are impinging on a nerve. Despite this, until 4 years ago when I stopped going to the gym, I was able to weight train using machines.

Have a word with the instructors in the gym and they will be able to advise you.
