Most of us, I think, keep our horses as a hobby rather than as a business. Maybe that is where the difference in attitude comes from; they are to all intents and purposes pets. If I was a dealer or breeder I am sure I would be less concerned about the mental stimulation my youngster was getting, as he wouldn't be around for long. I think most horse owners, especially in winter, need to believe that their horses are pleased to see them when they turn out in all weather to feed, rug and turn out/bring in! I don't have a problem with the way any horse is looked after as long as it is well and happy. Not everyone has the facilities to allow horses to be kept in herds, and exhibit natural behaviour, or has a horse that can be allowed to stay off work all winter so doesn't need clipping. I really cannot see the harm in anthropomorphising. Like I say, if horses are a business then obviously it will be different.

You still havent told me, do you keep them out? ride them? ect ect.
You seem to judge us people who as far as I can see look after and care for their horses , that it would be intresting to see how you who judge us look after yours. Not so that we can judge you but as you obviously feel so strongly about it it me be interesting to hear what you do rather than just hear what you disagree with.

i keep mine out/in/out...whatever is needed..
they DONT have supps...rarely fed, are rugged only if clipped, receive hay when temps drop below -1 and are as happy as larry...
i show mostly....in-hand/ridden local/county/breed shows
never return without a rossette.
all good to hack/lead/load/shoe/clip....
never sick or sorry....vet comes to geld/tet/sedate for wolf teeth removal and nothing else touch wood!
And the point is, isn't it anthropomorphising to suppose that a horse knows or cares if you anthropomorphise? And after two glasses of red, typing that was a nightmare.
Surely only the comfort or discomfort of the horse matters? You can twiddle on to your hearts content about his PJs and his brekkie, why would he care?
Taken to the extreme, even the little dear in the ballet costume doesn't know or care what a tutu signifies, does she? Why would it mean any more to her than harness, or rugs, or any other kind of clobber?
But what are 'human traits'? Isn't it slightly arrogant to imagine certain emotions or traits are the sole domain of humans and don't apply to animals? I don't really know if other humans have the same emotions as me - or even exist and are not an imaginary construct of mine
. However I give them the benefit of the doubt as I do with my animals. I have a capacity to love and be loved in return and my cats and horse fulfill this need better than any human I have ever encountered so of course I will be soppy with them!
My pets are treated in a way appropriate to their species in the same way I would treat a child in a way appropriate to its stage of development, so why is loving a cat/horse and thinking it loves you different from imagining a young baby loves it mother?
If ours didn't have hay all the time they'd starve - we have no grass LOL! The modern horse is quite domestiacted, and as man has done that, man has to look after what he has created. Also, horses live a lot longer than they do in the wild, as they receive decent health care and feed. Also, it probably makes a difference if you have lots of horses to look after rather than one or two.
You must be very lucky to be able to afford enough grazing, to keep your ponies without giving extra hay unless it goes to -1, wish we were all so lucky.

I believe that horses should be kept in conditions as close to their natural environment/lifestyle to facilitate natural behaviours and allow them to be happy horses.
My three live out 24/7 all year, although I do have stables for them just in case. They do wear rugs, as my field doesn't have a field shelter, only natural shelter, and they range from half to full TB. They eat mainly forages, and have limited hard feed.
They do behave well as a herd...and seem quite happy, rarely do they gallop about as they are not stabled overnight so are satisfied with their locomotory freedoms.
I have to strike a balance between a natural lifestyle, and my wishes...but I try to think what horses would like, rather than what I would like.

I remember being very annoyed when I couldn't think of a name for my Silver Tigra because and I quote 'It had no personality!'
I am a lost cause.
this thread is almost like a confessional!
Hello, My name is ___ and I anthromorphosise everything
Hell, I even cried last week when i ran over a pheasant. yet my dad and his friends used to run a shoot.
I don't think i am doing any harm by being a big softy so long as I still have my common sense
PS Don't worry about the mare, it was a very long time ago.

Now ive never given my Tigra a name maybe I should lol
Seriously though, when C came to me she was badly neglected and had had a really tough life. Now she has a home for life and deserves to be spoilt in her final years.
Horses dont know theyre horses do they or maybe you are horse specialist physcologist in idenitity disorders?
Nothing wrong with soppy and looking after your horse, they do feel the cold, God blessed them with nerves etc-and we humans blessed their stables with draughts.
everyone has theyre own lifestyle, correct me if im wrong,
but why is there alot of comments on how people treat horses, surely being over the top if better that another jamie grey story?
you have to take into account circumstance... some people who dearly love their horses just can't facilitate a 'natural' life style for their horses... and that is something the horses adapt to
