Potential New Horse Thread - Vetting Today!

“ETA: does anyone have any good recommendations for a floor feeder? I am keen not to use haynets”

I use a Parallax hay saver. More robust (imo) than the haygain forager, can be used inside or out, far less waste than a hay bar (all the horses I know just pull the hay out!), can get at 10kg plus of hay in.

Thanks, I’ll have a Google!

Congratulations. Love it , you liked the look of him got him vetted and you’ve bought him . No messing around . Just bought what you liked . If only everyone did that these days .hope all goes well xx
You can’t beat an ID x
I wish the world were set up so I could do it with more things, I hate faffing about! Thank you, I’ll make sure to update everyone. I’ve always wanted an ID but always thought they would be out of reach £££ wise!

That was Hermosa. Saw her at the breeder's, vetted her, then bought her. Only regretted it occasionally.

I have an Eazigrazer. I love it BUT it doesn't hold enough to last the horse overnight, if they are in. So I have a small haynet as well. The Parallax thing might have been better. It just looked huge.

Okay so I may have put a deposit down on an unseen, unbacked 3yo - eeeek! Not the best timing, I wasn’t supposed to be looking in earnest yet but I saw him on Facebook and just had to enquire. I’ve just got off the phone with the most Irish sounding man I have ever heard who told me he may be able to do the two stage vetting and bloods today (I had no idea it was common to work today in Ireland) so quicker than I thought!

He’s 16.2hh, Class 1 ID and will grey out (hopefully slowly!). Lived in a herd his whole life as owned since a foal, but now brought out and handled, rugged, bathed, trimmed and has seen the farrier. His movement is gorgeous! Dealer (Adam Ferris) reckons he will make 16.3hh. I’m hoping I have been a little more sensible than my 18hh+ warmbloods that have a tendency to break, but I am still feeling really quite apprehensive.

He is as yet unnamed, so without counting my chickens, suggestions welcome!

I am absolutely bricking it but also super excited.

Very nice.

Congrats on your new boy! He is stunning. Hope you have many happy years today, do keep us updated ❤️
How about Shay or Darragh for name?

Did giggle when I saw Lagan Valley Vets mentioned, not for any bad reason only it’s funny to see somewhere local named by someone over in GB. I was only in there on Friday buying a tube of sedalin 🤣

Haha, I did exactly the same thing in 2020, was lazily looking for a new one, saw a rising 3yo on facebook that caught my eye and next thing I knew she was on the boat on her way to England 🤯
Hopefully this works out for you like it did for me, she's been an absolute star, best stupid impulse purchase ever :D

So yard definitely want to wait for his results from the Strangles test to come back as it's just their standard protocol, so I envisage him coming early/mid next week (which works for me anyway as all the bits I have ordered are arriving Mon/Tues). I am itching with impatience!
Definitely should be working, busiest time as it's month end too, but I just can't quite focus!!

At the very least he definitely won't turn up pregnant 😂 It looks like you're having fabulous fun with her now though, so it all worked out in the end! I will have a look at one of those too, I'm not entirely sure whether he is a good doer or not, I have all these things to find out which I am quite excited about!

I was at my OHs grandma's house when the vet called to discuss pre-vetting, she was ever so excited to hear someone from her home town on the phone as she's lived in Sussex for 40 years now. It was all I could do not to have her steal the phone! I am thoroughly pleased with them, great and prompt service so far - very straightforward and not ambiguous too. I like Darragh!

After a long winter of woes and worries for so many people on here it seems, it is so good to have a happy story to follow. Can't wait for more photos of his arrival - and onwards!

You do realise @AShetlandBitMeOnce that you will now become the go-to person for others who are looking as you seem to have managed it so easily;););)

What a lovely post, thank you! I am more than happy to be the contact, but I don't know yet if I have been lucky or stupid, so perhaps hold out until he has a hoof on UK soil! 😂

Léim an chreidimh for a Sunday name
(means "leap of faith")
Forgive my ignorance, but how do I pronounce this? I think the short list is currently: Dougie, Fergus, Mac, Boy - but I am more than happy to add to the list!

Well he's a bit lovely! Wishing you many years of fun and happiness with him.

Just one thing..... if he's 16.2 at 3 I'm willing to bet he'll be at least 17.1 but the time he stops growing. Charlie was 16.1 at 6 when I bought him (unregistered breeding but came over from Ireland and definitely at least 75% ID judging by his head and build) and, although I never measured him again, was noticeably taller than Archie (who is 16.3) by the time I sold him at 8. Still, 17.1 is small for you so it shouldn't be an issue  .

Oh that trot!! He has a lovely face too as well as that beautiful colour, congratulations! Look forward to seeing more of him when you have him over.

In terms of hay feeders, my horse's neighbours on either side in the barn have haygain foragers. They do keep the hay confined, but there is a lot of jerking through the grille and they are loud if you have a horse who is impatient and hungry. Can you tell I am not really a fan...!

Well, he is (or was) technically 2yo albeit in his 3rd year - he turns three today, born 02/05/2023. He doesn't look bum high, but I know they can just grow 3 inches behind seemingly overnight, so it will be interesting to see what he does! I wouldn't have thought there would be that much growth between 6yo-8yo, so it's super interesting that you say that!
Quietly I would quite like 17hh+ but I have to feign responsibility at least ;) Sire was 16.1hh from what I can find, and don't think Dam was a giant, so I suppose that's why dealer said 16.3hh top but I'll have to string test him when he arrives!

Sounds horrendous - like having two loud chewers either side of you! 😂 I don't mind so much contained, I just don't want it trodden all through the bed. I did have a huge open top box in my old boys stables, so perhaps I'll ask if I can do that, I'll have to find out how greedy he is and whether he can be trusted with one!

He came over from Ireland just before I bought him so I wonder if decent grass and feed made a difference - he wasn't poor at all when I got him so that might not have been a factor at all but it's a possibility as I think in general they do tend to be out in a field in a big herd and benignly neglected (which I think is a good thing!) for the first few years. Obviously Charlie had been brought in, handled and nicely started (if green in the school) as he was 6, not the 3 year old you've bought. IDs do seem to be late developers from what I've seen though.
I took these two photos exactly a year apart. If you look at the breeze blocks behind his withers you can see how much he grew in that year.

Oh my god! He really did - and filled out, especially in his bum! I have bought a tape measure with HH, so I will keep an eye on it!

He looks really lovely ASBMO! He really moves for a big horse. Looking forward to the arrival pics and hearing what you think of him when you finally meet!

My Charlie Horse was advertised as 16hh at 5 years old, he was a touch smaller but the owner thought he would make the 16hh, maybe 16.1.

He ended up as 16.3 1/2! Lots of growing between 5 and 8 for him.

He did look quite backward at 5 when he arrived though. Not underweight exactly, but no top muscle. Think ewe neck.

Oh gosh, 17.2hh wouldn't be wildly unrealistic by the sounds of it then! I don't mind whether he grows or not, I just want sound - it's all quite exciting not knowing what you may end up with isn't it!

Oh he is so handsome though! You were super lucky, not sure I'd be brave enough to buy a ridden horse unseen - I guess it depends how much I like the look of him!
He wasnt really ridden, just raced lol so that was the only time he had been out was riding of the marches i think.
