Completely agree, unless it's a 'purposeful' piece of kit, take it off - less to clean, less to bother the horse. I don't ride with one, I don't need one, so why bother? He looks common anyway! ;-) tend to think if a horse NEEDS something, i'd far rather look into why he's doing what is...

Needed to bump, and also to add I know alot of farriers don't like dealing with 'big' horses, and he is certainly that - having said that, he's not shod all the time, but he does take a size 6!!!

My gelding had same problem, and after a couple of years of a useless vet practice, swapped to another, 3 opserations later... still cleaning, but at least I now know what it is! I have to clean him every other day, it is incredibly smelly, but is now his favourite pastime... sadly, Im not too...
