Another fatal dog attack

This is a bit out of date but interesting.
The law is based on the assumption that it isn’t the dog that is dangerous in itself but the way that it is handled that can create a danger to others. It is the owner that must prove to the authorities in Spain that he or she is fit to be in charge of a potentially dangerous animal.
If you do need to obtain one of these licences then you should first approach your town hall to find out where the department is that you must apply to. You will be checked to see if you have a criminal record and there will be a health check that includes eye sight and strength. They will also confirm if there have been any complaints made by neighbours against you.

Oooh, now that IS interesting. Puts the onus on the owners!

I've had an Afghan Hound, GSD's, a GSDx?Labrador, and a whippet x greyhound. I never allowed any of them off-lead until I was confident that they would return to me when off-lead. The Afghan Hound was unreliable, even after our attendance at a Barbara Woodhouse two-day training course, so he never went off-lead except on our own private land.
As a child, my parents had an evil Fox Terrier who used to lean out of his bed to bite me. I got smacked because " you must have annoyed him". One day, he snapped at my mother and he disappeared.
A woman friend of my mother had an equally snappy Pekingese dog who also bit me. He was being carried in his owners' arms. I was the other side of a large room and he struggled out of his owner's arms, rushed across the room and bit me hard on my ankle. No apologies again. I was carted off, the wound was washed, plastered with Dettol cream and I was told to "not to bother him again".
Times seem not to have changed for some people.

Ha, Goose is screwed! Just about 20kg at last weigh in.

Goose is safe! 18kg at the vets just now, I weighed him on our home scales last time, they do weigh heavy! Mitch is 21 and a bit, Bear is 25kg. All are fine, but I could have come home with half the pharmacy contents if I’d chosen! As it is, I have loxicom for Bear as he’s stiff and steroid cream for Goose’s paws because they’re a bit yeasty/red.

Well on the local neighbour website there is a photo of an XLB loose in a field that attacked a lady walking her two dogs. The XLB attacked her younger dog and a passerby helped her get it off. It sounds as if it could have been very much worse had she not had help.

The dog was collected (got out from it's home by the sound of things). Police attended so I am hoping it will be seized as it is definitely an XLB from the photo.

People posting saying "poor baby he was probably frightened" and other cr@p. People saying how the police shot two "defenceless dogs in London who were no threat to anyone". OMG it makes my blood boil.
That poor lady it would have been terrifying and the dogs will be traumatised. I do wonder if he was let out to wander off and was maybe no longer wanted :-(.

I realise if he had meant to kill the other dog he could have (he was a big dog in the picture typical XLB build) so the attack could have been sustained and fatal and no one could have stopped it but it is a sign of the times that it happened at all.

Of course. He has to have some recompense for the indignity of going to the vets AND being weighed!
The youngsters are ridiculously fit, not an ounce of fat on them, the vet was raving about Mitch's muscles! I do wonder how to make them a bit less worried. Mitch was very tense being handled, although I'm deliberately very hands on with them, checking paws etc, but obviously I do it with cuddles and I'm soppy on them. Goose apparently was just 'so cute' and got handfuls of treats, the other two got nothing, outrageous. We're very antisocial, so rarely have anyone in the house bar the dog walker. I might ask if she can have them on the floor next time, being up a height really raised Bear's anxiety.

My vet nearly always treats mine on the floor. Jesse is quite phobic about being on the table after a rather abrupt vet looked at her painful ear.

It has been announced that Scotland is going to follow England in banning XLBs, so I hope all those who took on XLBs that were 'saved from death' in England are prepared to keep them and comply with the law. I would hope that anyone in Scotland who has acquired an XLB since the ban was announced in England had already considered the possibility of it happening there too before they took the dog on.

Seems to me that if you put something on social media people are happy to donate. Why do they not donate to a rescue every month by setting up a standing order. I donate to 2 horse charities and 2 people charities by DD monthly and have been doing so for 3 years and will continue for as long as I can

There are those of us who quietly donate to our chosen charities and those who like to be seen to donate, as we can see from the comments on facebook.

I don't really understand why he was shipped all the way up to Scotland after being dumped, but they are saying he isn't a banned breed and can be rehomed legally? If he fits the type then he will still come under the legislation, and if he doesn't then why the dramatic attempt to rehome?

I did wonder when there were so many reports of people transporting van loads of XLBs up to Scotland just pre-ban whether they (the 'rescuers') would actually be able to find homes for all of the dogs, it sounds as though they couldn't.

And it’s ok, he’s only bitten one person.

So who wants Derek ? Anyone ?
I expect it's just the name putting people off, not the similarity to a banned type, the poor upbringing, his size or the bite history. He just needs re-branding, although it will have to be to one extreme or the other depending on the market they are aiming for, so either 'Syko' [sic], 'Killer', 'Blade' or 'Fluffykins', 'Mr Snuggles' or 'Babysitter'. 🤣

Poor dog just the beginning of it al I would think, brace yourself for far worse to come.:(
Well hopefully the people who have taken on these "rescued" dogs will now comply with the requirements, or return them to their original owners so that they can finally fulfill the requirements. What do you think the odds are?
