Does the legisation not reference cross breeds and of type?
I think so, but if you call a cross breed an 'other' name and change the type just enough then there is no recourse in law, even where changes in type make little difference to function. That is a real weakness in breed specific legislation and wherever measurements et c are used in law. Arguably, the key change in type from pit bull to XL Bully was in size...

You'd have to be pretty dim not to recognise that an XLBully is a type of pitbull, I mean it's even right there in the name....

They are bigger, stronger, seemingly more aggressive pit bulls that have been marketed as something else, something new. Am I right in thinking they are more prolific killers than the original pit bull or does it just seem like it because we hear about it these days?

My friend had a cross bred pitbull that was reported. Dog warden came out, said it was a cross breed and left.

Theres a fairly big difference in how pitbulls and XLs look, XLs are much bigger and have those huge block heads. Pit bulls are quite sporty in comparison. It seems that the idiots that created the XLs took the worst of the pitbull crossed it with the worst of the American Bull dog etc to get increased size and muscle tone and then "line bred" the results for a couple of generations and here we are. Enormous dogs with a switch that flicks without warning in most cases.

You see, I don't think that's clever.

Did your friend tell you why they chose to have a cross from a banned breed?

edit - spelling.

There was lots of them about in the North East at the time, I don't know if there is now as I left over a decade ago. But my friend was young and naive and got a cheap staffy cross puppy out of the free ads, and then as it grew she realised what it was. It wasn't deliberate on her behalf but I know it was for other people. When I left American bulldogs were getting increasingly popular and increasingly big. On reflection, its easy to see where that sort of breeding lead to.

apparently this is true
Derek is now up for rehoming as Weimaraner cross Great Dane. That'll be why he was sent up to Scotland then .

This is like the dressage debacle at the moment. Apparently if you don’t rescue dogs you have no idea about what breed a dog is.

I live in the North East and have never seen one. That's not say that there aren't any.

I remember that there was a member of the Farmers Boys, an international dog fighting ring, who lived in Yarm. He had pitbulls but I expect he kept quiet about it.

Well as I’m not a rescue I shouldn’t comment, he has already bitten someone so sounds like an excellent choice for a first time dog owner … I’m pretty soft about animals but PTS wouldn’t be the worst thing for him as he already has a bite history at only 10 months

Looking at all the scars on his ears he could have been fighting too.

All these people saying 'Poor baby, just needs to heal' and so on - why are none of them offering him a home if they feel so strongly about him?

Oh, don't you know, 99.9999% of comments on rescue posts are 'awww I wish I could take him but I have a dog/cat/no room/live in a flat' etc etc etc, IE 'I'm being of no help whatsoever but I want to clog up the replies by showing everyone what a nice person I am'.

You forgot to say 'shared with love' or is it 'shared with hope'? 🤮

Its the rougher council estates, South Bank/Grangetown sort of area I saw them. I kept my horses not far away so was in that general area a lot. They weren't everywhere, but it wouldn't have made me look twice if I passed one as I was used to seeing them,

They need to throw the book at him in the hope it acts as some sort of deterrent. He knew his dogs were an issue and did nothing and now someone is dead.

Absolutely agree. He's on record saying that he wasn't going to comply with the law. He had a non neutered male which killed another person. I very much hope that the charge is at least manslaughter. I don't think it can be charged as murder when there was no intent to kill her but there is recorded intent not to reduce hormones associated with aggression in the male dog.
