That sounds promising - does he have a temperature?

He had a very slight one on arrival at hospital but not when at the barn.

Ok so he had west Nile vaccinated at 6 month intervals but not the booster he should have had in between it seems as a first vaccine. So no idea if or how effective it would have been.

If it is that.

I do get reminders etc from this vet though about vaccines, dental, worming. The need for a booster was just not specified. When you tell a vet to give the horse what it needs you kind of expect that to be communicated when it turns out the vaccine is pointless without the booster.

No we won’t know until tomorrow if it’s even that. But I’ll be furious if it is, mainly with myself, but I will (in my opinion- justifiably) feel completely let down by the vet. That said- he’s only human.

Lesson learned the hard way I guess and even if it’s not WN I am now very uncomfortable that he’s in the foothills and exposed knowing he’s unvaccinated.

At least, I can’t find any record of a booster in my email. Plenty of vet visits though 😔

That is weird if you get other reminders though. Sort of gives you a certain expectation for sure. I hate that they don't really use passports for vaccines here!

I am just so sorry that this has happened to you both - so unfair. He’s such a fighter though and everything crossed for you over the next 24 hours for positive news and results.

Thank you. This is so weird, I was hysterical driving to the barn this morning and very upset on hospital admission (thank god it was his internal medicine vet there who I know well).

Now I'm just kinda... numb but not even distressed. No loss of appetite, doing some work in front of the TV... I feel nothing. Maybe I'm just over this fight and stress.

Glad he's brighter and eating.

Not quite the same situation but Chips vaccinations have lapsed. He was due them in July, right after he was trying his best to die. Given they 1) didn't know if he'd live 2) they had no idea what was wrong other than guessing at cancer 3) his system was highly compromised I was advised to skip it.

It was only a flu year and I could possibly re start his vaccines now but I'd like to give his system some time to recover from all the drugs and trauma. Plus I'm also worried about a vaccine triggering anything (he and Fat Cob both had severe reactions last year for the first time ever. Both needed the vet back out to attend to them).

So see if Chip dies of flu or tetanus between now and next jab I'm blaming that on the sh!tty universe, not me. My point is you shouldn't be blaming yourself if it is booster related, which no one knows at this point. It would be beyond bad luck for him to have picked it up and that would be extremely unfair on you both.

Bottom line, it's not your fault and no one could ever doubt your commitment to Boggle.

I hope that you're remembering to look after yourself too x

So sorry to read this @Michen, keeping everything crossed for Bog. If he’s eating and head up, hopefully that’s a positive sign. You clearly do your absolute best for him and this is not your fault at all. Sometimes things just happen beyond our control and we just have to take each day a step at a time. He’s where he needs to be and will be looked after. I went through a similar stage when my horse was very poorly last year, I think feeling numb is the brains way of protecting us to give us a break from the stress. It’s prob what you need to do atm, so go with it.

It's not your fault I do think when a horse has been very malnourished or starved they sometimes become compromised later in life, so not your fault again you have done nothing wrong x

Yeah I wondered this. But his blood work has been so pristine and he looks fricking AMAZING. He is bursting out of his skin with fitness and energy and health.. well he was 24 hours ago.

How is he this evening?
Everything crossed for a positive update x

He’s eating and calm and not in any distress but still ataxic.

Hooked up to fluids to give him as much support as possible and also some neurologic drug protecter or something like that. Also treating for EPM because it doesn’t do any harm and if it is that the sooner the better albeit it’s not cheap.

They are doing another full neuro exam tomorrow and assuming the tests come back negative we will re X ray the neck and everything in and around it.

Michen, I am a new member here so I have only skimmed through this thread. I'm so sorry to read about this latest development with your sweet Boggle!

As an American who moved to a foreign country (Germany) last year and brought my horse with me, your words about blaming yourself really resonated with me. Blaming yourself for not being a better advocate for your horse, blaming yourself for even bringing them into this situation in the first place because maybe this wouldn't have happened if they just stayed back home... I have felt that way many times in the year and some months that I have lived here. In fact, I am taking my horse to a university clinic later today for a lameness evaluation after a couple months of on-again off-again problems that began when he twisted his shoe and stepped on the clip. Of course I blame myself for the whole thing.

I get so frustrated thinking about the fact that before we came here, my horse and I were cruising around at BE100 and schooling for BE Novice level and now I feel like we can barely string together more than a couple weeks of work (also due to other factors) or sometimes even just days without incident. But it's not just about the competitions, it's the fact that this is your horse and when he is hurting so are you. I moved to this country for my spouse but my horse is such a large and important part of who I am. I never considered moving here without my horse but during the hard times when everything is going wrong, it is hard to not resent yourself for putting them in this place that caused this problem whether it would or could have happened back home or not.

I hope that you can find solace in the fact that he is in the best place to diagnose and heal from this. Don't beat yourself up anymore for things in the past because you can't change them, focus now on the present. I'm glad that you are able to spend time with him his jail. Sending healing vibes! My heart goes out you and Boggle.

Oh Michen - try not to meet the demons before they really show their faces - just sit tight and wait for all the results so that you know what you are really dealing with. You've done this before - you can do it again, however hard it is.

As for not having him with you - how would you feel if you heard that he had had so much as an abscess and you not there to deal with him? Whatever Fate is throwing at you you have some peace of mind that you have done all you could for him. Keep the faith - Bog is some fighter.

Poor Boggle and poor you! You've both really been through the wringer recently. I really hope he continues to improve and makes another full recovery, whatever it is.

Please don't blame yourself, though. These things happen, and it's very clear to anyone who's read this thread how dedicated an owner you are when it comes to his health.

On another note the vets are exploring the option of this being a vaccine reaction from his jabs last week. It seems a little far fetched given this has happened a whole week later but apparently they spoke to the vaccine company who are considering helping with the diagnostic costs..

So that’s interesting and tells me maybe they’ve seen this before. He only got flu last week though- as I had the vaccines split up rather than all at once this time round because he had a (pain) reaction last time).

I don’t know if the flu jab here is different to the UK ones where he never had an issue.
