FWIW, my Dartmoor has coughed ever since I bought her at 3...she's now 8. The cough has been getting steadily worse, is the same winter & summer, happens with the same frequency at work or at rest, no runny eyes, no sticky nose, ventipulmin did nothing... She has seen 4 vets...the last one said probably a touch of asthma. The chap in the tack shop recommended Science Supplements Respiraid. The cough has now reduced by about 90-95%. Her coughing used to be the first thing I heard on the yard every morning, but after 5 years of coughing, it has now pretty much stopped. She has the odd coughing episode and they are now few & far between. Amazing...we are still on the first packet. Might be worth a try.
 
Ok so how quick can ventipulmin work? Just hacked for twenty mins and Bog took Pepper popping out of a bush as a perfect excuse to grab the bit and then explode into a series of bucks that i haven’t felt since he was 5 🤣🤣v then jogged the entire way feeling extremely pleased with himself.

NO coughing!!!!!!!

Oh loving the photo with the shavings in his mane. And good that he felt well enough to test your stickability :) He was so ill that there are bound to be some blips along the way, but you will be you and find the best way to manage him.
 
@Michen, have you ever thought that the winter cough you mention might be a (very, very common) indication that Boggle could have an existing sensitivity and so the vile pneumonia and bacterial infection would have exacerbated that and possibly that is what you have seen lately? From my research, discussion with vets etc, it seems as if as many as 60% of horses have some respiratory compromise though it is often un-noticed due to there being very few symptoms until a horse is put under some additional stress. Some horses are obviously a bit thick winded, others seem less energetic ('laid back') than you may expect etc and not all of the problems are actually in the lungs as it were. My mare's lungs have always been clear!! BUT she does have a respiratory issue related to pollen. It is interesting and I believe respiratory health is something that most of us don't know enough about. I do know that increasingly, racing yards etc use a nebuliser as a form of complementary health (without steroids but with other things) to help keep horses in training in better health. A friend of mine with a successful 4* eventer has a protocol that involves nebulising with plenty of saline as otherwise the mare's asthma impacts on her performance in the form of raised respiratory rate and slightly lacklustre fast work. It can be really subtle. Anyhoo, it's just worth thinking about! Sorry for the essay and you probably know all that already lol.

i find they cough for as long as it takes to clear themselves, coughing all the time is more worrying to me

i used paper bed when the copd one coughed i think it helped, virtually dust free

Yes! Although when I say winter cough I mean one or two coughs at the start of exercise, nothing beyond that. But yes :)

Yes. My vet says that even that is not 'normal', common yes, but not normal. Except that it is so common that we often think nothing of it. In any case that is for longer term pondering really - it's great the ventipulmin is doing the job now :) Keep going Boggle.

Totally agree. I used to ignore it because it never escalated or lasted but I know it wasn’t really normal. Though Bear would have it too.

Boggle update! Took him off the ventipulmin a week ago and have heard him cough once since (start of a trail ride, didn’t do it again). I’ve just started some schooling and had a few actual canters, he is fabulous. Our friends at the barn were laughing because he’s doing the most uphill canter transition like he’s going into battle 🤣 He seems fit, he’s powering up all the hill mountain roads. Respiratory rate seems totally normal, there is absolutely no change in his buzz or zest or ability to be buzzy (so far).

He looks the picture of health, seems truly happy and I didn’t think we could be better buddies than we already were but we somehow are- he seems genuinely more affectionate and much more tolerant of me kissing his nose ;)

I am boxing him out to meet a friend for a hack on Sunday and he is going to be overjoyed to leave the barn for the first time other than the vet in nearly 4 months!!!

He looks amazing, so pleased for you both. Hard to believe he was so very very poorly.

My chap had a very nasty cough (poss brought on by choke we are not sure) and was on ventipulmin. Since then he only coughs if he sticks his nose in a dusty arena. I can't feed hay or chaff but as long as I stick to haylage he never coughs. Although a year on from the one episode he does seem more tolerant of hay (grabs mouthful of friends if I visit)
