A friend of mine had a phenomenal Volksraad - big chestnut who was a super jumper. He was a very popular event sire down here so thanks for that!
I've photos of him in quarantine at Newmarket after my BIL bought him at the sales when he went into quarantine plus some of him in NZ at Mapperley

Briefly back to XC, there's a difference in how riders will take on the XC with a view to the time. Riders who feel they are in with a chance will ride as quickly as possible and a technical course like Burghley that comes with bigger risks and really sorts out those combinations that have good control. Less experienced riders will ride for a clear and be less worried about time so will allow more time for preparation and then you have the riders who seem to have little control and no brakes, tbh I thought I saw a few of them yesterday with most paying the price. I used to love watching Pippa but not these days and I don't like the forward style of some of the riders especially Gaspard, at least definitely not on a course like yesterday's. Interestingly IMO I didn't think any of the four rides that made the time looked fast and furious, it was the combination of good riding, responsive rideable fit horses that made the time achievable.
Conniegirl, your daughter is so like you! Looked like a great family day out!
Bring on the showjumping, for anyone who hasn't subscribed to Burghley TV, it's really well worth the £20.

Agree with this. As we are always told, it isn't how fast your ride, it is how little time you waste - so knowing your line, no trying to set up. Ros Canter gave a masterclass of what it should look like.

Gaspards round on Zaragoza was really difficult to watch. I adore eventing but with social licence, getting the job done irrespective of how, has to be critiqued.
I get it’s a fine balance of wanting the ‘ideal’ but then having to deal with what you have out on course, it’s never/rarely going to be perfect.
I agree (and was going to post similar) that those out for a completion and not with the clock in mind will take less risk and therefore at times make it look easier. Time is part of the game and I wouldn’t want that to change, but sometimes the competitive aspects gets quite close to the line on the welfare aspect.

I watched Izilot warm up for the XC yesterday and got the feeling from his crew that (although he looked incredible) he wasn’t quite in the game. They were saying that maybe the atmosphere of the start box etc would open him up a bit and wake him up. So I think perhaps if that didn’t happen and he wasn’t on form, pulling up was the right call. My friend pulled hers up at Badminton after what to all onlookers was a very minor runout, one you could easily carry on from, but she felt in her gut he wasn’t able to give her what she was asking. Turned out he had an inflamed liver.

It will be interesting to see if with a bit more time and exposure they can get him to really love the job, because I’m not convinced he does at the moment

I actually thought Gaspard should have been pulled up for his riding yesterday. We were at the Trout Hatchery, so saw him come through there and saw the rest on the big screen there. He looked like he could have fallen several times and it was pure luck, not skill, that he got round.

I was also there earlier when Pippa had her blip. She was lucky, what a save. I hope she’s not hurt. I agree that she’s not always as nice to watch nowadays- a bit like Mary King was before she stopped doing bigger tracks.

Re Izilot, it’s interesting that Discovery Valley is a bit like the lake at Badminton- a bit of an amphitheatre with lots of fence options, big screens and huge, huge crowds. Clearly not his thing. I wonder if they will try Pau again? Quieter events might be his thing. It reminds me a bit of Nicola Wilson’s Annie Clover - could out class everything on a good day, but really had an off button sometimes too, and you can’t go round a track like that if your horse isn’t on your side.

Definitely think Viscount Victor is going to be a 5* winner. He oozes class and talent.
Lots of poles rolling so far this morning!

Oo we could've had a mini HHO meet up!
Clover was there for her first Burghley and she was so incredibly well behaved

(Luckily she can't read and doesn't know she's wearing the wrong event!)

I honestly couldn't tell you who it was who went past at that speed, it was a blink and you'll miss it moment, but she cleared it!

We were probably sitting next to you! We watched the first six and last ten there. We usually finish at Discovery Valley, but it was sooo busy we walked back up to the Trout Harchery (which was also v busy at the end).

My little Romanian dog is getting old and a bit arthritic nowadays, I wondered how she’d cope, but she walked 6.5 miles quite happily.

Very interesting that I actually walked further on dressage day (8 miles). It’s amazing how much you cover up and down that shopping village and back and forth from the arena to the interview area.

So pleased Jesse went clear. ❤️

@Honey08 oh man, that sucks! I was so pleased for her that she got through the leaf pit as she always gets eliminated there. She was going so well and class affair was on her side and then she gets wiped out by the corners 😭

Will Rawlin on Ballycoog Breaker Boy was stopped on course at fence 22 by the GJ.

IIRC the tv footage of the pair hadn’t showed anything overly concerning, but they hadn’t been shown on screen for a bit before we saw them being stopped.

No, Emily retired. You’re thinking of Will Rawlin. Though I’m still not clear as to why he was stopped?

Me neither.

I really wasn't keen on Emma's horse, he really tucked himself chin to chest and didn't look all that cooperative as a result. He is only 10yo though so she has plenty of time, and plenty of runs to add some training/fiddle with tack and see if she can help him. It sounds like he's very strong/keen so she's between a rock and a hard place in terms of brakes and the amount of pressure needed to have breaks at this point in time.
