Us English tax payers having to fund the ridiculous restrictions in other parts of the UK again. We now have more debt than after the world war !

and tax payers in devolved nations are paying for your ridiculous rail lines that end in middle England and your test and trace system, which was madly over expensive due to UKGovs cronyism etc etc ad nauseam. Tw@t off with that line of argument.

I am not at all sure the devolved hangers on will get any money for their own restrictions .
It’s decades since I spent NYE in Newcastle .I can’t imagine anything worse now . But it’s going to rammed tonight with Hogmanay refugees .

@Sossigpoker As if devolved nations had no tax payers.. as if Scotland doesn't subsidise HS2 and Nuclear Subs it doesn't want.

@Goldenstar I came home to the Highlands and the place is heaving with English on hols here.. Oh and before you cast me as some kind of anti English racist I am English. The sooner Scotland votes to dissolve the "Union" the better.

I certainly wouldn't go to my yard if I even suspected I had covid, we have at least one livery with a family member just recovering from cancer for a start and many with elderly relatives etc but I do worry what would happen to my horses. 10 days is a long time, I've never been away from any horse I have owned for that long before. My yard is purely DIY, there's no Covid field (brilliant idea!) So far, everyone who has come down with it has only 1 horse and it's been easy to absorb, but I have 2, and one is acting quite out of character at the moment. I have had all 3 jabs, I do the masks, the sanitising, I have done LFTs regularly throughout the Xmas break as Omicron began to rise, I know that eventually we do have to live with it, a lot of us will end up with it I suspect at some point but as with any illness, I think we should be mindful on how we impact others.

Exactly. Plus this latest variant is a cold. Literally.
I think I had it. I had a cold , perhaps a bit worse than a typical winter cold but not much. I went to the yard every day regardless. Everyone is fine.
Are we really going to lock the country down every year ? I'd get it if people were dying everywhere but they're not. It's a cold.

767 people died from Covid in the last week and the infection rate is increasing rapidly- how many people die from colds? That's before we see the effect of multiple households mixing over Christmas and New Year. Each Covid admission to hospital means a bed isn't available for someone suffering from something else. We aren't talking about another lockdown just people being willing to think of others.

It’s such a small thing to ask for people to be responsible and not leave their house for 7 or 10 days if they test positive. It isn’t the end of the world to sort out someone to do your horses. It’s the lawful and moral thing.
Im really happy for everyone who hasn’t been affected by covid the way I have.
Three of my colleagues (who were friends) died last year in the space of two weeks all under 45 all with young children all of covid.
My mum was in intensive care with it and thankfully recovered but physically will never be the same again and tbh one decent chest infection would probably finish her off now due to the damage her respiratory system has sustained.
I was basically under house arrest for 18 months as I’m the only clinician in my company and head up our covid task force. They couldn’t risk me being unwell. I live alone. I didn’t have any human contact whatsoever for 18 months. As in I didn’t see another human being in real life for that amount of time!!!!! I’m exhausted, I’ve absolutely had enough of it. If you think you’re bored of it trust me multiply that by 100 and that’s where I am. But you know what if I did now test positive I would sit my a** in my house for 7-10 days because I know my actions have consequences on other people and I’m absolutely sick to my stomach listening to people dismissing what has been a total utter nightmare for me as a “cold” yes Omicron is the prevalent strain now thank fully, yes it does have milder symptoms. But Delta hasn’t gone away 6 people in my office currently have that strain. And just because you only got the sniffles doesn’t mean an immunocompromised child for example will have such an easy experience. Get someone to do your horse if you have covid please. That’s all I have to say about that.

I think Covid has impacted each and every one of us, in various ways, and it's not been an easy ride for anyone.

I had Covid in March 2020. It was the most horrific experience ever, to the point I wrote my final wishes for my partner, so he had what he needed, should I not make it.

My experience has left me with anxiety, which I've never had previously, it took a huge emotional toll on my children and partner who thought my game was over, and has left me feeling exhausted, less able to manage my asthma and generally not feeling myself.

I'm a stickler for the rules, regardless of what the government has or hasn't done (that's a topic for another day), what they have or haven't said etc. I know, from my own experience, that it's not 'just a cold'. It wasn't then and it isn't now. Yes, there may be various strains, each one different, each one less or more likely to make people very ill, but it's not just a cold and anyone thinking this and acting in an irresponsible manner, is, imo, a fool.

None of us want to be in lockdown, none of us want to face restrictions, none of us want to feel like we're being told what to do. But guess what, this isn't about just you - it's about those around you, friends, family, strangers. Your life is no more important than the next person's.

If I knew of someone who had tested positive doing anything other than isolating, I'd damn well be reporting them. Regardless of the consequences.

I have lost two friends and a colleague to this awful virus and know of people who have lost beloved family members.

It's a horrid thing that we have to learn to live with but let's not be' Shelia, who was selling bathbombs on Facebook last week and is now a government advisor and a professor of microbiology'.

On a side note, I have a close friend who was very much abiding by the rules at first, got double jabbed, then started believing trash on social media. She refused her booster, said 'it's just a cold', 'it's all rubbish', 'it's a conspiracy' etc.
Said friend called me this evening to say she's poorly, feels like she's been hit by a bus and has tested positive. Not life threatening but she said she now feels very silly for how she's been behaving.
Problem is, she's not just put herself at risk, she's risked the lives of others.

And that's the crux of the matter.

No matter what you believe, and you're entitled to believe what you want to, this isn't just about you!

Rant over.

Covid killed my dad. Sossigpoker, your attitude is disgusting and those like you are the scum of the earth. If lock down becomes a regular thing and it stops any other family going through the same as mine has the last 14 months. Them so be it.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Wow, so many selfish people!!! Legally you have to isolate if you test positive , so you’d need to find someone or pay someone to look after your horses, Regardless if you have your own yard or not.
It might just be mild symptoms for some but for others it’s a death sentence and the right thing to do is think about the bigger picture and not just yourself.

I'll tell you why people aren't testing and carrying on as normal, because this is becoming a FARCE. 3 jabs in and STILL no further forward - are we going to have jab no 65 and still be locked up. Unfortunately people will die, but they will die of other things too, we can't keep everyone alive forever.

And winter flu killed thousands in the years before covid yet there is no hysteria over that.

The flu virus has been around, according to historical records, for approx 1500 years. Records have been kept for flu related illness for approx 500 years.

Flu is a known quantity, has been around for a very long time, and yes, does unfortunately claim many lives year on year, although it seems Covid has suppressed the flu virus in recent years.

We have effective flu vaccines, developed over many many years, not two years as we have with Covid. Albeit flu vaccines are only effective if the algorithm correctly identifies the flu strain most likely to be prevalent in that current year.

Covid on the other hand has been known since early 2020. It's still relatively unknown.

I don't think a fair comparison can be drawn between the two.

Hysteria to you maybe.

It's not hysteria to those who have lost family members, friends and colleagues.

We are a lot further forward , hence we all had a Christmas this year ( those of us free from covid ) even though we have the highest levels of infection since the pandemic began.

The vaccinations are holding , last time I looked over 80% of those in hospital were unvaccinated, over time the virus will get less and less as our immune systems get more used to dealing with the different strains of virus until we will be left with the equivalent of a strain of flu .

But we are not there yet , it all takes time , be patient, be careful , be considerate to others and if you’ve not been vaccinated for goodness sake get vaccinated .

Totally agree!

I find it almost laughable when people moan about being locked up and losing their freedom. We've got it relatively easy in the UK.

I have friends living in many other countries, one of which I've been told is a country where the street police will beat you in public, throw you in a dirty prison cell and let you languish, should you break the rules.

We have it easy, as hard as it seems.

The problem is, Joe Public expect there to be a cure that can be pulled out of the black hole like magic. They appear to forget that diseases now eradicated, took many many years of research and trials.

And that this isn't a disease, its a virus, and viruses can only exist where they have hosts.

So let's throw caution to the wind because we don't want our rights to be taken away from us, and spread it as much as we can and go merrily on our way.

I won't even get into how many people are dying because they are unable to access the healthcare they need for non-Covid illness.

The mind boggles, it really does.

We are not on lockdown as far as I can see the only lockdown for those in England is for 7 days for those who test positive and wfh if possible.

We have a great deal of freedom. There are hardly any restrictions compared to this time last year.

Covid does not just cause death there is also long covid to consider. If this virus was killing or causing long covid in children would you feel the same or is it just because you don't want to help protect the over 50s and CEV. I do think this is a Russian roulette virus as it is also taking out young healthy folk too, you just do not know how it will impact on you.

If someone told you staying at home for 7 days could protect another livery from dying or getting long covid why would you not do that?

Because its a farce maybe, or that maisie06 doesn't have children, vulnerable family members, friends etc. Or that maisie06 doesn't give two hoots as it's just hysteria ?

Apologies for using actual facts to dispute this but according to an article in the Times today:

In an average year flu kills between 10000 and 20000 in the uk, covid has killed more than 150000 over 2 years.

You do the maths. Covid is much deadlier than the flu.

We are going to have to learn to live with it - but that doesn't mean people who have it should knowingly spread it around. I'd much prefer it if people with any type of illness stayed at home rather than coming into work and coughing over me.

a number of years back we had an outbreak of norovirus at work. After a few people struggled back in proudly declaring they were still at their desks despite vomiting until 5am we had to rule that no one was allowed back until a full 5 days had passed since they were last sick. The virus was taking out entire teams and making it impossible to run the business. "Learning to live with it" doesn't mean you don't take sensible precautions - like staying at home when you're ill.

I think the annual flu death rate is about 11,000. We're on 149,000 deaths and that's being conservative because as I understand it its not counted if you die more than 28 days after infection. We have one of the worst death rates in the world and you have to ask how many more would have died without the lock downs, use of masks and social distancing. What really pisses me off about the way people dismiss this virus is the impact that must have on NHS staff. They must be so exhausted by it all and then they read idiots proclaiming its all a conspiracy.

Have you had your first jab yet, maisie06?

Yes, we know that you aren't registered with a GP. You can still get jabbed, though.

And we are a LOT further forward than we were before the vaccination programme began despite all the idiots who won't get jabbed.

We need to remember that the published covid 'death rate' is of people who have tested positive in the previous 28 days. There are no stats for the numbers of people who have died solely due to covid and with no underlying health conditions. Indeed, I know people who have passed away during the pandemic but they were elderly, frail, and with underlying health conditions. A friend's mother was one, and she had to argue about the cause of death which was wrongly stated on the death cert as covid.

That may not be true of Omicron compared with a newly mutated bird or pig flu virus. The stats are still being gathered around the world but it's looking not unlikely.
.

That's true, but as I said above, as long as the covid virus is in general circulation their is always the risk of more mutations/variants.
