He went out, leaving the dogs in the house, to get the ladder. I heard growling and hastened down to find Ffee was very worried about this strange man in the house and had gone all guardy.
Today, I was out and someone came to look at the gas fire. After the guardy incident I had nagged and nagged just to put the dogs in the kennels when workmen are here. He didn’t bother, man swung round to stroke Pen and she went for him. Didn’t actually bite but a proper threat yell ( by the sound of things). More words. Man’s an idiot.

I feel your pain. Mines the same. No bloody common sense at all. The really really annoying thing is that he lets the jrt speak to any dog they meet on their walks. DRIVES ME CRAZY 🤬🤬

I've tried telling him why it's no good but he says I'm being mean. Yeh right. the next person I'm going to be mean to is him!!

Now if he has to walk the dog he's sent on walks where the chances of meeting anyone is practically nil.

My OH "babies" our JRT cross. He leans over her when she's on the sofa and he's stood behind it to "kiss" her goodnight. He doesn't see the warning signs of her stiffening, whale eye, tense. If the other dog is also on the sofa, he (other dog, who doesn't suffer fools gladly) normally warning growls at this stage. OH calls him a grumpy old sod. I can be sat between them, or with the JRT on my lap. I've told OH again and again not to do it, but he won't be told. One time he'll have his face bitten, or I'll have a dog fight on my lap - dog body language is indecipherable to him.

Are we just unlucky or are some men just stupid!!!!!

And today's winner is.............

The middle-aged balding man and his setter-type dog!

OH (on foot), Fin, and I turn onto a trail through the woods, and we see aforesaid bloke walking towards us carrying a dog lead. No dog. Okay.

"He's just in the trees there, but he'll be fine," says the bloke.

We look and see red-coated setter-type, bouncing in the underbrush. I shorten my reins, thinking no horse likes a dog shooting out of nowhere. Dog does in fact shoot out of nowhere, straight at Fin, barking. Fine my a*rse. Fin leaps forwards, but I pull him up and spin him around to face the dog. Dog runs around barking at us, and I keep spinning Fin to square up to it. Owner attempts to catch his dog but this is clearly not going to happen. He says, "Just go on."

I say, "If he chases us, the horse will bolt or kick. The horse is more confident when facing the predator."

This circling nonsense goes on for anther five minutes, at which point dog runs into some thick trees and gets distracted by a large stick. We continue on our way.

A wee while later, we turn onto a different trail, and I see a terrified-looking deer absolutely caning it and a brief glimpse of a red furry thing at its heels. It's far enough away for Fin to not bother reacting. Deer and whatever is chasing it quickly disappear into the forest.

About ten minutes after that, we once again meet middle-aged balding man with his dog lead. No dog. No dog crashing around in the bushes nearby, either, and because Fin is Fin, I would definitely know if there was. I don't know where dog is, but it's nowhere near the owner. I bet it's chasing that poor deer and God knows what else, miles away.

Should have let Fin kick it.
 
Feel sick.

We were just accosted by a mastiff type dog. Of course I did totally the wrong thing and grabbed its collar (thankfully it didn’t attack me). Owner eventually appeared all smiles ‘sorry it just wants to say hello’ and a whole other set of reasons why his dog was not in his sight etc, whilst I completely lost it with him.

Sorry, don’t usually get so het up. But this has really shaken me up. He made a bee line for Daisy, bowled her over and stuck his face into her.

It’s half term. Nuff said!

It's utterly insane at the moment, isn't it. I don't remember having any of these sorts of problems with our dogs when we were little. Maybe we were just lucky, but it does seem that the number of incompetent, clueless owners had increased massively in the last few years.

It's sad, if I had a dog now, I'd be reluctant to take it out in public and very unlikely to let it off the lead anywhere. 🙁

Tbf, the only time I ever have an issue is during school holidays, it’s usually really quiet where I walk.

I don’t remember having these problems pre-lockdown. At least not the frequency I see them now. The ‘old’ dog owners I’ve been seeing round the village for years while walking my dog are fine with one or two known exceptions but they are easily avoided. It’s the untrained, unsocialised, lockdown puppies with clueless owners who cause the majority of problems I see out now. That combined with the people who buy dogs as a social media prop, usually a completely unsuitable breed (like the Weimaraner whose owner bought him because he’d look good against her decor on her Instagram).
 
Just seen a video on Facebook, female with what looks like an Irish wolfhound off lead and approaching a female with a reactive rescue dog , muzzled and on lead, she asks the owner of the IW to get him away from her dog as he is a reactive rescue. The female with the IW proceeds to scream at the the responsible person with muzzled dog on lead while her dog is lunging at after she had put it on the lead, she says he only wants to play 🙁 and the dogs will sort it out themselves and that it’s the owner that has made the dog nervous…. The IW owner was very abusive and threatening.
Glad that owner doesn’t live near me… well done to the responsible owner for filming it all

I saw that. I don't understand why someone would get so aggressive about their dog "wanting to play" (even if that was what it was doing)

Also people like her seem to forget there's a person at the end of the dogs lead. Leaving my own dog aside, I don't want some great big random dog running up to me barking full stop!
 
I haven't seen the video but it's a good job because it would absolutely boil my piss. You can do all the responsible owner stuff in terms of management of reactive/nervous/aggressive etc. dogs - lead, muzzle, walking at anti social times, walking in remote places, skulking behind cars and in side streets waiting for dogs to pass, desperately belt-feeding and blocking and about-turning your dog so it doesn't kick off... aaaaand here they come, my dog is friendly, you should let yours off to play, your dog is only like this because of you, why are you so uptight, it'll teach mine a lesson if he gets bitten, dogs like that shouldn't be allowed, this is a dog walking area, you should expect dogs to run up to you... and yes, I also think that both the level of entitlement and volume of dogs has increased even in the time I've been a dog owner.
 
Bath Racecourse are now telling people to stop walking their dogs in the centre of the course as they are going to start grazing sheep there. The dog walkers are up in arms, its the only green space around for my reactive rescue dog, where am I meant to walk now etc etc. Apparently the land they are walking on is private land and there are clearly marked public footpaths around the perimeter of the course which they are able to use but don't want to 🙄

I read that, too.

But really, this is not unexpected and the owners of the racecourse should have foreseen it.

When you let people use something free of charge for any length of time and then stop them from using it, they will be upset about losing that amenity.

I used to walk at a racecourse and dogs were eventually banned and I understand why. I stuck to the ambulance track but was in the minority. No one kept their dog on a lead and there was crap everywhere, despite bins at regular intervals and people let their dogs run through the hedge/fence into the adjoining golf course.

Today we were walking in the woods when we saw a lovely golden retriever ahead on a lead. Put Fodhla on her lead before we approached and the guy said 'he's very friendly there's no need to put yours on a lead'. When I said I'd done it on the off chance that mine bothered his (she probably wouldn't to be fair) his mind was absolutely blown. Sometimes I wonder if people even care about their dogs. Not irresponsible per se, just clueless I guess. Made me laugh anyway.
