What about going to one of the sales? I'm clueless on when they're on and where but it would give you a chance to get one literally straight out of training and able to look at a lot in one go and you've got enough knowledge to know what you're looking for and at.

The ROR market has made the sales feel far riskier than it used to be. Back in the 90's I bought at Doncaster regularly. But back then there was no organised outlet for ex racers and it was normal for most of them to go to auction. The creation of ROR resulted in a large number of retraining businesses and charities and the result of that, I think, is probably that the proportion going under the hammer of ones that people wouldn't be able to sell privately has risen.

I might risk it in the autumn if I haven't found anything by then, and buy a 3 or 4 year old that's raced recently, so was sound enough then.
