My dream horse was to get something like the team chasers I'd been lucky to ride at my riding school - a flashy, talented TB type who could jump the moon and had flawless flatwork. Specifically a bright bay with black points & no white bits.
My sensible side came up with the more realistic...
Sorry to hijack, I have a Welsh section a I'm hoping to show in hand ( just local stuff, for fun) but he's been diagnosed with cushings so may end up clipped all year round, depending how his treatment goes.
Is this a big no-no? His mane and tail are kept as nature intended :D
Yes! 40 hounds vs 1 fox doesn't seem fair to me. It feels like a desire to maintain a tradition is getting in the way of finding a more humane method.
Not a popular opinion in the horsey world, lol.
(It also makes me cringe when I see them hammering on the road -ouch!)
I bought one this summer & love it. No chance to test mine in snow yet, but have seen them cope better with snow than a bigger 4X4. They seem to float over the top of the snow!
As already said, they're not great on the motorway. You need to stay under 60mph to avoid wasting fuel. Off motorway...
Perry Woods mixes NH & classical with good results. Great teacher, have seen him work wonders on parrelli horses in clinics - one hairy cob became a dressage superstar :)
I think he writes for one of the horsey magazines, too?
Definitely check eyes! My normally trustworthy mare went from leading every hack to rearing whenever we met a car/bike approaching us from ahead. It got so bad we couldn't hack out alone. I'd put it down to a few too many incidents with fast cars (& one cyclist who aimed for us!) until the vet...
Please tell me I'm reading that wrong - someone has contacted the owner because they want him for a 9yr old child??
Hope you're ok and get this sorted.
We have a school, so I could try loose schooling. Do you work on same principles as lungeing, using voice commands & body language to send on & bring back?
I find soaking hay works really well for our Welsh pony. Figured soaking will soften the hay & make it more pleasant to eat - she used to...
Thanks everyone, the holiday is appealing to me now. As she hasn't responded to my riding the way she does to her owner, maybe I'm being lulled into false sense of security?
Sounds like best option might be time off, then look at bitless & other options later. Standing martingale is a good...
Thanks for the advice! Sorry pastie didn't see your post - she's moved yards a few times & two dentists have been involved. Have been told its ok to ride & with all the moves & time off she's become dangerously fat (though getting much better now this is able to be controlled on current yard)...
Yes, been told the pain is like having a constant headache :(
I have a hackamore I could try - would putting the pressure elsewhere cause pain in another way? Is a hackamore another harsh choice? Is it worth getting a good. instructor involved if I go bitless? I've not ridden without a bit in...
