So my wee man had a trailer accident (we were static, he leapt over the front bar, somersaulted then got stuck under the bar) in August. He was checked by a vet several times after (immediately, 1 week later, 3 weeks later and 8 weeks later). He never took a lame step, had some superficial...
It was an imaging specialist down at the Edinburgh Vet School. I will try and find out who! Three other vets missed it, but she spotted it and she was 100% on the money.
Another update … we have an answer!
The X-rays that were taken were sent to a neurologist and imaging specialist who identified a fracture in a vertebrae in his neck. It has already started healing but he is away out to grass for the winter as recommended by the vets to allow it to heal and...
Just a little update for anyone interested:
Neck and back xrays clear.
Still very sound on soft/hard/circle/flexions
Vet is quite confident he is not in any pain at rest - he shows no signs of discomfort in his daily life at present. Happy to graze and fart about the field.
Decision now made...
Yes vet involved and he's on bute to help with pain, but that obviously doesn't solve the issue.
Shoes, I have been told by both vet and farrier will make the problem worse as it's effectively what caused it in the first place so not really an option. Also, I don't think his feet would hang on...
I am looking for help/advice/experience as I'm fast running out of ideas.
My old boy is almost 25 and was retired two years ago due to obliterating his check ligament for a second time and being diagnosed with a G5 heart murmur and is high risk of sudden cardiac death.
I took his shoes off a...
So my wee man suffers from what I think is sweet itch and have always treated him as such, but as the years have rolled on, the more I am thinking it is not sweet itch but something else.
In the summer, he will scratch his mane and tail and along his body if left to his own devices. He doesn't...
Thank you all for your input.
I do understand there are ethical questions here.
He is currently appearing happy and content turned out, so turning away is potentially an option as I have my own land, however, I don’t like the idea of turning him away if he is in pain and it just gets to...
Trying to keep a long story short:
My 5yo has been ‘not right’ for a couple of months. Very reluctant to go forwards, exacerbated in the arena. When he does go forward, usually on a hack, he can be quite explosive (fly bucking, rodeoing). His reluctance to go forward in the arena has now...
I am just looking for a little advice whilst I wait for a second opinion on these x-rays.
9 year old, 15.2 mare. She has been struggling with poor performance that has manifested in bucking, hollowness and reluctance to go forward. She started refusing fences which prompted a work up with her...
He has an annual lameness workup with his vaccine as I do with all of mine and nothing has ever been flagged in flexions, lungeing, trot ups or palpation of his back. He's had hock xrays after a field accident which were, vets words, ''perfect''. This isn't pain, it's learned behaviour.
She actually rides very well considering she's come from a RS. She has good natural balance and feel, no not perfect, but certainly better than alot of 11yos who have been riding their own ponies for years!
