But they are stretched as it is without taking time to learn how to best deal with a dog that is intent on doing serious damage to people. I hope they continue to despatch the out of control dangerous dogs. They shouldn't be living amongst us anyway.

I know people say they have been abused, badly treated etc, but in my opinion lurchers were the worst treated and abused dogs before bullies became so popular, and I cannot recall any lurchers killing a human.

Too stretched to do in-house or cross-boundary training? It would actually make more economic sense if dealing with dogs was part of basic training given by the remaining dog units, as calling in specialist teams is quite expensive.

I think there are 2 dog handlers in Hertfordshire, who are trained to handle their dogs, whether gsds or search spanners. It’s going to be quicker to call Firearms. My OH’s team sometimes parades 6 for a population of approximately 100K, then 2 at a time might need to go to custody and if the nearest custody (they turned the one at the nick into flats) is full, they have to travel 50 minutes. It’s ridiculous.

My trainer was a retired training sergeant who was adept at controlling absolute monsters, his own work dog included lol. A bit naive of me to assume there were still folks like him around?

What's wrong with a quick end for a dog while it's mid-maul, rather than taking it away and subjecting it to genetic testing?
If it's attacking someone so seriously that the police have been called, then taking it permanently out of circulation sounds like a good call whatever its breed

I'm not discussing the case in Scotland. The London case was badly handled from start to finish.

Sorry all, i read unmuzzled! Have deleted comment before it causes more upset.
I read this and thought 'Oh no, here we go, good start to early Sunday morning' ! And then I saw who posted the comment and realised it must be posted in error as it was you posting. Just goes to prove your reputation for definitely not one to deliberately cause trouble is sound! 😂🤭

I honestly don’t know, there are just very few.

My OH is referred to as the dog man, purely because of our little pack. One of the dog handlers who was originally on his team once left her radio on as she traveled somewhere, all the time telling her police dog what a good boy he was and generally making the county happy! Dog handler posts are dead man’s shoes and there are therefore very few around. The other handler I know is in the Met, about my age, I teach his daughter. He has a springer and a gsd, they must be doubling up!

No that's normal, a lot have a search dog and a GP dog.

We did have a guy who wanted to get on the course, took up a lot of time and rinsed us for every bit of knowledge available then pissed off when he didn't get in, le sigh....

I did try to tell my OH he should be an official dog handler when he got bored of intervention but he couldn't cope with dogs being outside and officially, they're supposed to be out. I'm sure they'd be fine, but he likes lap dogs. 🙈 Mitch has recently decided to become a lapdog, the OH is delighted. Goose has always been one, but almost exclusively on my lap and Bear still scrambles over my OH to get on my knee!

What's the thought behind keeping them outdoors? The handlerss I work with have them indoors.

Several of them have 2 or 3 dogs, one being a detection dog of some sort
