Yep. Horrendous. I mean it’s not like I have the money sitting there, but I have access to it through cards, and I have a job that means I will eventually pay it off. If this had happened five years ago it would have been way, way more stressful.

So although it sucks it’s not going to ruin me (unless I lose my job 🤣)

She did say he’s got at least another 5 days to a week in there to be careful (at best) and obviously I’m not going to take him out a minute too soon.
 
I just bought the bigger hay steamer (need to cancel the other one) because I feel it’s a pain for the barn hands to have to do two rounds, whereas the bigger one can fit 24 hours worth in it.

I know I’m paying for the care but they work hard and I want to make life easy for them. I think the smaller one will be annoying to have to do twice a day.

Amex says YES!!! 🤣
 
Sitting waiting to board a plane but had to check in on Bog. Wonderful news. Only horse people can celebrate a poo. Getting cross is always a good sign too 😃. Keep going Bog you're doing great. No more cigarettes Mitchen stick to the bloody marys 🤣
 
Reading about your adventures with Boggle have given me many smiles.

Steamed hay doesn’t keep- it needs doing fresh at either end of the day
 
Re the steamer, I had one and used a timer plug to make it just before use. Make sure yours has a safety cut off at the end of the cycle though, in case the plug malfunctions. I would just fill the water tank, put the dry hay in and it would do itself.

When emptying, the hay store needs cleaning as, although there isn't much water left, it is dirty and would soon have bacteria multiply in hot conditions. Then the tank can be refilled, fresh dry net put in, plug set and the unit left to see to itself until next hay time.

That’s a bummer. I may as well save a grand and have the small one then…

Is it fair to expect the barn to faff with this? None of the horses are on soaked hay etc.
 
Hooray for a much better update. I don’t think for a second that Barn staff would begrudge taking the time if a vet has advised it. They probably wouldn’t anyway but definitely not in these circumstances. I’d also heard bacteria can grow rapidly in warm damp hay x
 
So glad he is on the improve, well done Boggle! I will be curious to hear if they come to a definite diagnosis. Keeping in mind that pneumonia can have fungal causes as well as bacterial, and can also be secondary to other infections if he is immunosuppressed. Viral panels don't test for all viruses, just the most common ones (I also work in human pathology, go figure ;). You may not get a concrete answer which is super frustrating as you can only speculate on any prevention to put in place.

I would buy the smaller Haygain and steam fresh before feeding. They are used here but go damp and mouldy very quickly in hot weather. The risk of fungal spore inhalation would be too much for me for pre-steamed hay.

If steamed hay is the recommendation then probably twice a day is best; definitely 'safer' and not much trouble in the round of stable work really. Is haylage not a possibility (I am assuming not)? Really good news that things are looking like they are improving all round - Well done Boggle!!! :) :) :) I have to say the cost of treatment is massively daunting and Boggle is incredibly lucky that you can and are prepared to go there. It is frustrating that insurance is not possible for this and for so many owners it would just not be possible - I am very glad that Boggle is one lucky pony!!! Amazing owner committment. :) :)

I love this so much. I’m not allowed to scrape so I will scrape air as it’s the closest I can do without a telling off. 😂 what a jester. I’m so glad he’s fighting this so well.

It is good for at least 24hrs steamed in a haygain I only do mine once a day summer or winter no problems. Yes do make sure it has a cut off switch for when the hour is up it is so easy to forget. My steamer is in a barn though not outside but I have never had the hay go yukky on me. Though my grass is a rye grass mix so after it has cooled it is quite crisp . I like filling my nets before it has totally cooled.
 
Such a relief to catch up on all the news. Slow and steady as she (he!!) goes now seems to be the order of the day. Thank God for modern drugs.
